Review

Drawbacks: very basic security options in OS, VPN speeds seem lackluster

Expires tonight

At this price makes me think to jump onto ubiquiti hype wagon, but still thinking about doing a setup with pfsense which seems power and hardware hungry at this point… send help

I have one of these (plus a couple of older wifi 5 unifi APs I scored for free, for extending the wifi). They are great and a fuss free solution.

I have very low tolerance for dealing with IT configuration nonsense these days so it was a welcome relief.

    • I was going to pointing out that UX only supports a few other UniFi network devices and their bandwidth will be heavily bottlenecked by the gigabit LAN port on it.

But then I see you say it's all Wi-Fi 5 and freebies - yeah for just-enough internet speed and focused on coverage, your setup sounds great! Would probably save even more if APs are connected through a entry-level, non-UniFi PoE switch (unless you get the switch for free, too - likely!).

It's worth mentioning that the new USG-Ultra is meant to be a better router/controller:
    https://www.wireless1.com.au/ubiquiti-cloud-gateway-ultra-uc…

Yes, it doesn't have wifi - however my personal preference is to use discrete UAPs because:
    1. I can position them optimally
    2. They tend to be better with more MIMO
    3. I can upgrade them without taking down my controller/main switch

    • Agreed, and these are also 1gbps Routing with IDS/IPS too.

      Stock availability is a problem.

  • these work really well now there is a firmware update.

As an IT nerd the Ubiquiti stuff is ok, but their meshing, disconnect on config change and auto power are all very average. You also need a controller in some form, which is annoying.

If you are after a basic fuss free setup the TP-Link mesh 3 packs are easier and more reliable.

If you want to tinker make sure you hardwire the APs and i would recommend OPNsense/PFsense for the firewall over the Ubiquiti options.
