Thank you to everyone on the OzBargain community who has contributed to past discussions about dehumidifiers.

After scouring through the comments sections of past deals, I had planned to wait for a sale on the Ausclimate 20L or 25L models but it's getting mooooisssttt in Sydney, so I thought I'd just make the most of this price on the 35L model even though it's also the ugliest.

A summary of what I learned:

  • Ausclimate and Ionmax seem to be the most discussed brands on here.
  • Compressor models are better for indoor temps >20°, and desiccant for <20°. More information here which recommends compressors for Sydney, Northern NSW, WA, NT & QLD, and desiccant for Melbourne, VIC, Southern NSW, Tasmania & SA.
  • Desiccant models will generate a bit of heat and therefore raise the temperature by a few degrees.
  • Don't bother with compressor models <20L or desiccant <10L as they will be ineffective (unless being used in a small bathroom or walk-in-robe).
  • Buy the largest capacity model you can afford. They are more effective and while they will use more electricity while running, most models will switch off once the ideal humidity is reached.

    Have had the previous model of this unit for over 10 years, still going strong. Had to replace the control panel last year though and Ausclimate didn't have the parts as it's an old model. Got onto the manufacturer in China and they sent me a new PCB for free. Cool story eh?

    Some people may have a problem with the weight if it needs to be moved between floors. Check specifications before you buy.

    We have an Ionmax 681. It is not suited for the reason we bought it. It is destined for a WIR, where it should work OK. The power point excuse for not using it, "I'm gunna install", is close to four years old.

    We have a 20L decompressor model in the ensuite and a 25L model in the storage area under the carport. The latter drains direct outside. I use an Inkbird humidity switch so the fan doesn't run unless needed. So, the storage area model is set and forget.

    In many cupboards, we use Damp Rid contained topped up with Damp Rid from Bunnings https://www.bunnings.com.au/dampfree-3-4kg-refill-crystals_p… It lasts well.

    EDIT: If you want an Inkbird Humidistat they have two sockets. One for a device to reduce humidity and one for a device to raise humidity. If you buy direct from Inkbird, price is lower than eBay or Amazon and they give you a sign up discount (grrrr, I bought before discovering that).

    I have the 50L model, i live in a large unit in Sydney and this thing is amazing. I have it hooked up to a smart plug and inside of home assistant have it turn on at night before i go to bed if the current humidity is over 70…. Brilliant for keeping the mould at bay… the tank is usually half full by morning

      I'm on a hunt for a dehumidifier as well and planning to make it "smart" with a plug and HA integration. Did you have any issues with your setup? I read that it's usually not the best practice to cut off power suddenly on these machines because they need to run a fan for a while to cool off or something alike

    How are these (or the smaller 12L ‘Compact) for drying laundry indoors?

      Should be OK , but if its the dryer steaming things up, adding a vent hose to take any fluff that escapes the filter as well as the steam outside may be a better way to solve your problem.
      If a vent hose is not an option (renting; unit …), humidity will rise with the dryer on then fall when on with the dryer running. Work out how long to run the timer to get it down to 60% or less at the end (will vary summer to winter). For example, we start up our 20L model in the ensuite five minutes before showering and set it on minimum timer increment (30 mins). That takes it below 60% when the timer ends. No steamed mirror and the towel works better than in a steam room atmosphere. The tank needs emptying about once per week.

      Make sure you have space for it. It will work better where there is ample air space around it, not crammed behind something where there is little air flow.

    On second thought, a question on my own deal…

    I know the consensus is to get a compressor over 20L, which makes sense for the vast majority of properties, but if I’m in a new (i.e. tiny) one bedroom apartment, will keeping it in the living room with bedroom and bathroom doors open be sufficient? Thinking now that if I’m going to have to move it around between rooms, maybe the 16L (recommended for 30m2) would be sufficient?

    The layout of my apartment is relatively square. Bedroom and bathroom takes up half, living room and kitchen take up the rest.

      Bathrooms create moist air. Leaving a bathroom door open will raise humidity everywhere. Presumably, you have an exhaust fan. Running the exhaust fan blows air out. Replacement air needs to come from somewhere. Most likely from under the door. You could position the dehumidifier somewhere close to the bathroom, roll it in and run it when you have a shower (with exhaust fan off). Five minutes before, then a least until the humidity gets down to 60% after with the door closed.

      My manufacturer has 'do not use in bathroom' written in instructions. We've been using it when we have a shower for about 8 years.

      I don't have enough experience to say whether 16L would be sufficient. Get out your measuring tape and calculator https://www.dehumidifierhub.com/what-size-dehumidifier-do-yo…. Too big would be better than too small. It took me many days to reduce the humidity in a 3BR house using a 20L model, running 24 hours per day and emptying it frequently.

    I’ve had this exact model for the last 4yrs. Very good things. A few things to note;

    *It’s not quiet so don’t expect to run it while you sleep
    *It has a heating function so it will heat and dry the air which is great for drying clothes indoors
    *It’s heavy so getting it up and down stairs may be difficult for some.

    We had terrible issues with mould in our apartment but this thing sorted it out.

    According to the specs its power input is rated at 495w does anyone know if this is constant power consumption when the unit is running ? Or does it vary between 330w and 625w according to the specs on apliance online

    This was the first humidifier I purchased from Ausclimate and it is fantastic. I've had it for 5 years and it's still going strong. I have two of the 50 litre ones and one of the 20litre ones though on the former started leaking. The guys at Ausclimate were pretty unhelpful. They said I need to take it to Mosman to get it serviced and they will check if it's a warranty issue. I never bothered. This 35l one does leak a little bit now, but not sure if it's wear and tear or because i accidentally bumped the water tank on the ground. All in all happy with Ausclimate. Just make sure to clean the filter every now and then
