OzBargain's favourite (or second favourite to the G54) Motorola is 33% off RRP$449, best value phone for less than $300. Previous comments have shared that it has also been updated to Android 14.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G
  • 12GB RAM and 256GB Storage
  • 6.5" FHD+ p-OLED 120Hz screen
  • 50 MP main (OIS) + 8 MP ultrawide + 16 MP selfie
  • 5000mAh battery with 30W wired charging
  • microSD card slot
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • NFC
  • 33W charger included

Unfortunately, their eBay store is not offering delivery on any items and still shows a price of $399 so is not useful for many people.

  • yep my moto is on android 14, my oppo x 5 lite is till on android 13 .. interesting how different brands prioritize their products for upgrades one sales of a model shift.

    • +9

Does upgrading from android 13 to 14 really change your daily life, or is it just an uppity nerd thing

      • I wonder this as well…

      • +3

So it's either an update can change your life or it's nerdy? Updates are always useful

      • +1

depends if you use the new features or not, and sometimes features just work better, but it gets to. a point where features aren’t enhanced anymore e.g no more improvements to camera software and all they offer is security patches as sales move to newer models so improvements to e.g. camera or power consumption move to next major OS release.

      • There are make levels in between "uppity nerd things" and "daily life changed". This would be one of those and an updated os is almost always a nice thing to have.

      • Vulnerability fixes as well. I'm not sure if you're talking about just this particular model, but in general, it's best to get devices that will have long term support. Google and Samsung are the best for Android updates and upgrades.

      • +2

Upper nerdy. Running Android 10 on LG v50 don't see an issue. Also gives better sound than my Pixel 8 pro or iPhone 12

      • uppity nerd thing

May be the above is a touch strong?

    • I have an Oppo X2 Pro released in July 2020. It received an update last month.

      • Kudo…Motorola is weak with the length of OS & security support: a feature often overlooked especially for those who want to use then beyond 3 years.

    Browsing this on my G82

      • It's 18 months old, plenty of life left in it yet :)

Need to be lower than $200 to match recent G54 low-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841511

Currently using G54 & being a low-end user, the only benefit (my-use) is poled-screen…pure-consumption for me to upgrade at the LOW stated-price.

Motorola seems to be releasing NEW model yearly in many of their range, hence may be a G85 within 6 months ?

    • +3

Come on bro, I use a g54 as a second phone and it's super slow and laggy. G84 should be way faster and smoother.

      • +1

They are pretty much the same for day to day

        https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/qualcomm-snapdragon-69…

The 695 just have a much better supported GPU.

      • +3

        super slow and laggy

Feel free to provide details so that owners-of-G54 can provide feedback.

Although I'm a low-end user of phone, my experience is different from your comments 🤔

        • Its just a new phone, set on 60hz, and without a sim and there's still stutters (a lot) and lag (a lot)
I mean, its a $300 phone (RRP) but i honestly expected better. I've had some el cheapo xiaomis back in the day and i dont remember them being so laggy

          • @nikoris: Likely that something is wrong with your-G54.

            set on 60hz

            I have 'Developer options', 'Show refresh rate' & all-battery-saving-options turn-ON: I often see '90' Hz (green#) @ top-left-hand-corner of my G54.

without a sim and there's still stutters (a lot) and lag (a lot)

May be APP(s) are hogging all your ram ?
            With 'Developer options' turn-ON, review,
1.'Memory',…PAST-data, eg '3 hrs' (changeable-option): this list each APP & the AVERAGE-ram they use.
2.'Running services'…LIVE-data: this list each APP & the LIVE-ram they use. Android use ~ 3Gb ram

            Otherwise 'trials & errors'-> https://www.google.com/search?q=moto+g54+slow+laggy+reviews

If too-hard, try the retailer who sold you your phone (or expert-user) ?

            Good luck.

            • -2

@ab c: Why is there something wrong with my phone lol
Phone is slow end android phone and is permorming as such, why do i have to act like it's as fast as my iphone lmfao

I got ~57% of ram used, there is literally no non-stock app hogging the memory in last 3-12-24 hours (highest app is youtube with 270mb), there is nothing weird in running services (5gb free at the moment)
i still get lags and stutters a lot.

Nothing beats Xiaomi in lower end phones, i should have gone with one.

              • @nikoris:

Nothing beats Xiaomi in lower end phones

Pls list model & RRP, eg Xiaomi POCCO X5 $400 ?

Feel free to list links to establish source as support…likely to broaden OzBargainers knowledge.

How can the price of a G84 match the price of the lesser G54? They're not on par. Not while the G54 is still for sale.

      • +1

i have the g84 as a second phone, oppo x5 lite is main phone as too lazy to update biometrics and relnboard to back apps, paid extra and went g84 for the screen, once you’ve had oled, ips looks a bit bland. i’m a low end user and close down unused apps to save power which also means open apps don’t lag, but screen quality for me i pay extra $100 for something i look at daily for the next 2 years.

        • I wouldn't have a tablet without amoled bit g54 screen is fine even as an lcd. Zero problems here, in all honesty g54 screen is actually impressive for the price point.

      • +2

        Simply put, each-to-their-own.

How can the price of a G84 match the price of the lesser G54

I did say 'Need to be lower than $200', For-ME, G84 poled-screen, is worth $30 ish more than G54 $149 sale-price as per link noted above. Yes, I have test both-phone side-by-side @ JB-Hifi store while flicking through their screens & playing Moto's demo-video.. Tested a few time & recommend this for users who are considering these phones.
G84 poled-screen looks better (brighter & sharper), but is it a NEED (you'll die if you don't have it), or just a want?

        They're not on par

        For-ME & being a low-end user, these benefit off G84 are of NO-use:
1.256Gb storage…I've ~100Gb of free-space on my G54: rarely take photos & may be store a video within 1 year.
2.12Gb ram…I've 3Gb+ of free-space on my G54: no gaming & just a handful of App open…turn-on 'Developer options' & review your memory usage.

For those who are considering these phones, try notebookcheck reviews. Try their option to compare-phones at the end of each-category of their reviews.

Holy cow! How did I miss the G54 going as low as $149!?

Yes, right you are, these were your requirements, not my own. I've been super impressed with the G54 as I got one each for the kids to basically play Minecraft and other educational games on, and it's been consistently smoother performing than my $749 Pixel 7.

          • +1

@JownehFixIT: Yeah that's right half price of G84. It's real value for money G54 is great for $149. I wouldn't think $299 is good for G84 I suggest $249 would be

    • +4

I have recently considered buying a lower end device like these to use like an iPod touch, considering the low-end devices are the only devices these days with a headphone jack, and I don't feel like paying $1000+ for a "audiophile" player.

  • +5

    Good phone for this price

    • +6

love my g84, great screen, current OS, decent battery etc they skimped a bit on camera but most people aren’t interested in my photos and i’m not an instagramer or selfie taker. Don’t think barnaby joyce passed out drunk on sidewalk photo have looked better on a $1000 iphone vs my g84, it’s more subject and composition that makes the picture.

      • +1

Although with a low end camera, recording indoor gigs is crappy (my needs)

  • +19

This whole phone costs less than the difference between a 256gb and 512gb iphone

    • +3

We should be using the iphone 15 pro as a standard of measurement for value absurdity.

    • +2

The sad reality is that some-people buy flagship-phones to show that they have money & it makes them feel more superior than others…ego, pride, status etc

When you deal with them, you'll discover that they're predators, the kind that force you to be on-guard & avoid.

Sadly, these trait drive our economy & it's outcome is what we see around-us.

      • Some of them turn into seriel killers.

        • I did say 'some-people…'

Curious, pls advise the flagship-phone you are using (with details) & its features needed to meet your-use ?

          • @ab c: Yes I said 'some of them' …and they're usually iphone users. I use a S20 FE, why is that?

            • @x x:

              why is that?

iphone Pro Max & Samsung Ultra: flagships-features are often NOT use by owners & often they can't list them…test owners for yourself ?

Within 1 year, other brand copied flagships-features & sell them for less, if you need them.

Sorry, your FE does not count as it need to be S20-ULTRA :-)

  • -1

Does it have dual App ?

  • -1

How does the speed in comparison to g84? I wanted g84 but doesn’t come with esim. Just wondering if it is noticeable speed. I noticed with most phone the longer you use it get slow at times. My oppo a72 was good when I first use. Now seem lagging.not using for games

  • +2

Still waiting for phones in this price bracket to start getting wireless charging. Was hoping the pixel 7A was the start of something on that.

As much as moto mods was a failure the idea of optional wireless charging backplates was something I wish Motorola would have kept. I can forego the speaker, camera and random mods but the optional wireless charging without occupying the USB port was a nice idea.

  • Does this have esim? I see conflicting information online

    • No

    • +1

G54 does, G84 doesn't (weirdly). I assume its a limitation of the chipset running on the G84.

  • Why isn't esim available on the G84?

  • Fantastic phone for the price, I just don't trust Moto to roll out updates on their claimed schedule any more.

    • It seems like Motorola is sacrificing software-support to keep their prices low: G84 & lower models ?

I'm sure the internet has suggestions for prudent practices to reduce risk.

  • Got my G54 rooted and its going good, had a few hicups in begining but okayish now (only problem is stupid annoying sim manager crashed notification often)

    • Try google-search…I saw some reported @ Levono.

      • i ended up downloading de-bloater apk from github and then deactivating these bloatware apps like moto sh!t and then also this SIM manager,

        since then no issues whatsoever
