Colloquially a “spade” is this product (skimming gravel up off ground or moving sand etc) and a shovel is rounded for digging

i'd understood spade was for "digging", and shovel was for "moving". kinda fork vs spoon. I suppose there might be spovels in a similar way as sporks, but I doubt it

scooped is a shovel, flat is a spade. (if the end of the blade sticks up when the tool is "on its back" on the ground it's a shovel)
You don't dig a hole in undisturbed ground with a shovel, the angles are all wrong. @J B S: Funny how you're all agreeing that a spade is a flat, sharp-edged tool and a shovel is a pointy, curved-edged tool. A spade is the opposite of what it looks like on the playing card suit, in any case.
