@chrism238: Totally agree Chrism238, but always remember, the people who need high speed sequential reads, or more than casual usage, arent hanging around OzB complaining about 8GB Ram bargains.
FWIW, this thing is an absolute rocket so far, beautiful feel and use, amazing colours and brightness, very impressed.

@tjoy: It has become more manageable since chrome started to unload tabs, before, if you use chrome, you'd need to be careful with the number of tabs you keep open.

YouTube reviewers play a major part in this misinformation spreading. They focus so much of their reviews on benchmarks and how it improves their workflows, that people don't get a balanced picture of what is good enough for their simpler, more basic needs

Dont forget file transfer speeds on the 256gb model are half the M1 in many cases due to the use of 1 SSD chip vs 2 SSD chips on the M1. 512gb has same transfer speed as M1 mostly. May not bother everyone though.
I'm a systems engineer, have been in this space for a long time, use computers as an integral part of my work and fun-times. I have a M2 Mini, haven't had an issue with the file transfer speeds. In honesty I'm not quite sure who it is that would be generally bothered by this other than someone who is already aware that it's a thing, understand that it'll impact them and so - would probably not buy one of these anyway.
Sure, if you're intensely into gaming on it, or video editing, but again - you're likely not buying an 8GB Macbook Air - if you are you asked for it, you could've gotten a much more suitable bit of kit for this sort of price.

What are the thoughts on this for a Y7 school student? Everything they do is on OneDrive or Google Class Room or 16 GB a must?
It should be fine and the battery life would be nice to have, but IMO I would just buy a cheaper Windows laptop.
It’ll be fine for that stuff. My wife has used an 8gb RAM / 128gb SSD MBA for the last few years for light uni and work stuff and not had any trouble at all.
Obviously 16gb is better, and a must for some workloads, but for just internet, Mail, documents, etc you may end up paying extra for something that’s never used.
It's not a problem. My son went through Y12 with the previous gen Air - he did find that a little tiresome at times, but mostly because the cam in those things was an atrocious product.
He now has an M1 Air, with 8GB Ram, and loves it to bit. It does everything he needs it to and a bunch of stuff he doesn't need. As mentioned below, sure, 16GB Ram is better, but odds are, a HS student - or most other people for that matter - won't have any issues with this.Check the schools requirements, you will find that most private schools tend to be Apple, but been a few years since mine were in year 7.
If not a requirement, as Aureus says, get a cheap windows one, guarantee you will need to replace the screen within 12 months hahaha, especially when one of their friends closes the lid with a pen on the keyboard :/
Given Apple MacBooks cracked screens epidemic (just Google it) and Apple washing their hands of any responsibility or consumer guarantee (Google that too), these seemingly more appropriately called Lemons are surely not fit for purpose as a school laptop, where surely durability is critical. At our school a warning email also went out because many had had to go into repair because the screens were being twisted the wrong way and others because they got wet from rain, when I doubt they were being used as umbrellas.
Just lucky my daughter's MacBook Pro broke (less than two years old, just from putting a few pages of paper in it) and Apple quickly told me suck eggs on my consumer law claim, just before I ordered another for my daughter going to be a year 7 student next year.
I've now bought two of these which Asus promises "ultimate durability" and that Bing Lee has at an amazing $1,299 delivered, so low that HN wouldn't price match the second one after selling me the first (and being great as alaways I've found, doing the 7 day price match guarantee for me).

My girl with the broken MacBook is over-the-moon happier with this (as is little sister), especially when it came with awesome sound and a special pen we didn't know was included. She can't wait to return the MacBook loaner on Monday.
Just check whether the apps the school uses would work on Apple. Also, have a look at what services are included if the school has a laptop program. It might be worth paying a little bit extra if the kids can simply take a faulty laptop to the IT person at the school and have it swapped on the spot.
Thanks for that heads up. My daughter has a friend at school who uses a Windows Lappy and she says she hasn't had any issues. They have a very good tech department head and he said there might be an issue occassionally depending on the subject and they can have a loaner in that instance like, she was given when her screen cracked last week and will return next week. I am also thinking if Apple/reseller won't homour consumer guarantee law, I won't pay to get the screen fixed and risk having to pay again, but just use it as a desktop to help if my daughter has this issue pop up.

Just tried this price match at Auburn Officeworks. Their M2 MacBook Air is 1599, so the dude at the counter refused to do price match because he said they are already cheaper by 99c, cos Costco is $1599.99. LIKE WOW, REALLY DUDE? Off to JB or Costco then. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
