Sony WH-1000XM5 Noise Cancelling Headphones $400 + $8 Delivery ($0 C&C) @ The Good Guys Commercial (Membership Required)

790

Was looking around for a pair of Sony XM5's for some upcoming long-haul travel, came across this price at The Good Guys Commercial. Not the cheapest that they have historically been, but seems to be the cheapest that I can find right now for a non-refurb. Not sure how much stock exists in stores, I had to opt for delivery which ended up being fulfilled from Townsville for me here in metro Melbourne.

Requires a Good Guys Commercial (free) membership, REST Super fund members can sign up using the existing link below:

If you pay with PayPal pay in 4, you can also get $50 StoreCash with TGG.

    • I'm guessing you could probably also use those 10% off $250 Coles prepaid cards through that method too if anyone has them?

      • It didn't give me the option for gift cards on checkout unfortunately, just credit card or Paypal. Not sure if the Store Cash promo works through TGG Commercial, I didn't see it advertised anywhere but I didn't pay with Paypal. Would be great if someone looking to buy could confirm here!

        • Would the gift card work in the "Promotion Code" field? I don't have a Coles gift card but can see the Promotion Code at check out. Was trying to look for PayPal pay in 4 but it's not shown on my checkout

        • IIRC you can generate a quote on the TGG commercial website and then there's a way to use that quote in store and pay using split payments across multiple cards (ie physical Coles Mastercard Gift Cards/Vanilla Visa/Ultimate Cards etc) or actual TGG gift cards etc.

Generating the quote holds the price for 30 days so if you do that and then wait a couple of days you could use any physical Coles Mastercard Gift Cards or Vanilla Visas you might have left over to to purchase some 10% off Ultimate Gift cards from the upcoming Coles deal for an extra layer of stacking. Would be a further 16.73% discount if you do that. Even if you don't have any discounted Mastercard/Visa cards, you could still buy the Ultimate GCs and use them in store for a further 10% off.

I think there might be an extra step from generating the quote document to being able to use it in store - hopefully someone that has done it could chime in with any step I've missed.

    • Even on Commercial though?

    • +1

OP should also use the TRS if going international. :)

      • Can you do that for Commercial sales?

The customer on the invoice is also the organisation from which provided you access, rather than your own name, so I would have thought it'd raise some eyebrows, particularly if invoice is >$1k ?

Not a bad price. I think cheapest it's been is $350

    • +3

can confirm thats basically 'cost' price @ jbhifi, so its probably the cheapest itll go to for a while

  • +1

Huh? The upped their prices? I bought this last year from them for $389

    • Yeah, looks like it. Beats the $549 that JB HiFi and The Good Guys are selling them for retail though.

  • What's TGG commercial?

    • +1

I only learnt about it last night, seems to be a division within The Good Guys that primarily markets towards business clients. I guess a cheaper unit price makes sense, given that many businesses transacting via that department would have higher volumes than consumers would.

      • Oh, that's interesting! Thanks 😄
Seems like not everyone can sign up and claim this deal?

        • +1

Correct, you need to be able to sign up for a membership via some mechanism. Based on the mechanism I linked on the original post, it seems that many here are leveraging a partnership with Rest Super Fund to gain access.

            • @R4: I'm with Australian Retirement… Super? Am I able to sign up for Commercial?

@ak47wong: Oh my you're the best.
Didn't know ART also offered this!
Sadly, will have to wait 4-5 business days for the registration to get approved 😞
Hoping the deal is still available then haha

        • Union membership will get you in on the action if they’re affiliated.

I hope m6 they bring back folding in half mechanism… m5 just too bulky otherwise, love them for gym but other than that…

    • I'm in the same boat. I have an old set of Bose QCs and I'd miss the ability to folding them so much.

I bought these last week at JB, generated the quote and price matched, one store wouldn't do it though, 2nd did

    • surprised they did it at all since it's a membership only price not available for a majority of public…

    • you reckon we could just get a screenshot of the quote and try to price match it at JB?

    • Any chance you could send us a generated invoice for jb to price match?

      • most jbhifis wont price match a quote so be careful. it typically needs to be an offer readily available to anyone buying online or in store.

  • These or Bose NC700's for $345?

    • No LDAC was a dealbreaker for me on the Bose'.

    • +1

After using both for a period, I ended up returning my Bose (picked up the Silver for ~$255ish on the recent sale) and went with the Sony's.
I found the Bose a bit less comfortable, and the sound quality better on the Sony after some EQ adjustment. Also the microphone is better on the Sony for work calls, the noise cancellation also better on the Sony's. Plus the silver looked pretty weird on video conference calls. If I had the black, I might have been tempted to keep it.

      • Thanks for the info :)

God, i wish i could grab this deal … Too bad i dont have the access :')

Just a note that these dont work with Microsoft Teams for calls. So if you are planning to use them for work like i was, they wont work. Unless anyone finds a work around as I've followed and read about 50 different threads on Microsoft, sony sites, reddit and more and the fixes that look like fixes arent as its actually the laptop mic being picked up not the MX5.

Very happy to be corrected here

    • +1

They work fine for me with Microsoft Teams. What's the issue you are having?

    • +2

Are your mic issues only limited to Microsoft Teams? Check and see if it occurs with other applications, devices as well. You may have a faulty unit.

    • +2

I use these pretty much all day on Teams.

    • +2

I have the MX5 and also do not have any issues. The microphone does pickup everyone in the office though.

I also find you need to have both Windows and Teams on "Headset (WH-1000XM5 Hands-Free AG Audio)" rather than "Headphones (WH-1000XM5 Stereo)" for the microphone to work.

      • +1

I have mine on Stereo. Microsoft teams automatically switches when it has to use the microphone and switches back when the call is over.

If you keep it on Hands Free AG audio all the time, any music you listen to will be in mono

    • +2

Appreciate the replies. Thats good it seems to be working for people.
The issue was, that when you join the call, you could only hear, not speak through the headset. The mic would be disabled. Then you had to use the laptop mic. It wasn't a user error, as if you set the mic on the headset, it knocked out the sound on the headset too and you had to reconnect. Sony sent a note saying it was a reported issue by users.

There were some quick fixes, but apparently they were just turning the laptop mic on, not the headset mic on.

Its only for teams. Google meet, zoom and discord all work fine, just teams (which is what my industry uses the most).

Maybe its been fixed? But the latest i saw was in march 2023. We had 2 employees who had to refund their headsets because we couldn't get this resolved.

      • I have this issue on my work laptop haven't figured it out yet and settings are locked down, it's not detecting mic, only stereo profile for listening, on my home PC it's fine but noise cancelling wasn't working well until I downloaded app and connected to phone

      • This is more a windows issue than thr headset. Basically Windows is attrocious at this and depending on the version you're running can be a royal pain(eg this is a non issue on ios or android).

Basically to make sure windows and any programs won't automatically (profanity) it up, you would need to disable the stereo version in the sound devices (or the handset if you hve another mic input).

Once theres only 1 version of it enabled there won't be any issues and you don't need to rely on "Smart" swapping which honestly is just a workaround Window's jank ass setup.

    • I use my XM5s every day with Teams.

When a call comes through, automatically switches from XM5 stereo audio device to XM5 Hands-Free AG Audio. Then switches back when the call ends.

      I bought mine on release.

This or the Sony WH-1000XM4 which folds for storage at $348?

    • +4

As someone who has used both, I would pick the XM4 for these reasons:
      - easier to transport because it folds.
      - easier to fix if the hinge(s) break(s).
      - has NFC which makes pairing with certain devices very easy.
      - ANC can be set to non-adaptive.

The only things I like about the XM5 are:
      - subjectively better design.
      - better microphone quality.

      • Whats the deal with adaptive ANC? Does it turn on and off randomly or something?

      • +1

ANC can be set to non-adaptive on XM5 as well via the app settings

Only plus i'd give the XM4's is the ability to fold makes it more compact

    • I was also in the same conondrum - the XM4s or the XM5s. Decided on the XM4s because it's cheaper, it's foldable and has non-adaptive ANC.

    • Where is xm4 avail at $348? At GGC?

      • Yeah. $348 + $8 delivery.

        • damn it seems they upped the price since your reply wtf lol

  • +2

The headphones that make you look like Maka baka!

  • At that price, in my opinion, just pick up the Bose QC Earbuds II for comparable ANC but actually lightweight and look nice to wear.

  • Anything on the WF-1000xm4s? Missed last week's deals but hoping EOFYS bring a good price around.

  • God, they removed the stock from GGC for xm5 black :')

  • +1

Tried being cheeky with the JB Deal live chat and despite not being able to get down to $400, did get an offer for $470

  • +1

Argh gone now… I'd been considering these for awhile.

  • I bought them a couple of weeks ago. If you don't have direct access you can get someone with a seniors card to register through senior shopper which provides TGC access.

  • just an FYI.. i've got good guys commercial access, but the item i wanted wasn't in stock on the site. I was able to price match WITH a good guys store. I had to prove that i actually had access to the site (logging out and then back in) but could get the price match

  • Received the item after a week with Toll.

Disappointed in the sound quality. I have been using the wf-xm3 for 3 years and have hi-end hifi system at home.

These xm5 cans are not even as good as the xm3 in ear. sounds muffled and muddy. not sure how it wins so many good ratings.

    ANC is phenomenal though.
