    Sonos Roam SL or something from the Anker Soundcore range? Also looking at a few portable bluetooth JBLs/Sony. Need it as a computer speaker so needs to have good (or some) bass without a woofer. I'm fine with it being rechargeable (less cables).

      having purchased a Sonos Roam when they first came out (they have a money back guarantee) I was completely underwhelmed by it, was expecting so much but it was tinny & lacked decent bass, go & try it before you buy or put it beside competitors (there's better for less $$)

        Thanks for the feedback man. Most people seem to like it on ozb so I wasn't sure. So many options out there in this category. Can't forget the Bose Soundlink Mini as well. Tinny is definitely not what I want

          I really wanted to like it, people love Sonos & just want to like it, I blind tested it for my friends against my JBL speaker & every single one said the JBL had better sound. The Bose is the better option

            @Irishness: The Bose is not weather proof or dust proof, and is bluetooth only.

            The Sonos Roam is weather proof and dust proof, and can use bluetooth or wi-fi. It can also sit upright or on its side. It's the better choice.

            No idea what JBL speaker you're talking about, it would help to mention the model. JBL make too many speakers. They make some ugly speakers too!

        Completely disagree I think it is a fantastic speaker. Once you use the app and play with the EQ it does an excellent job, plus having both BT and wifi connections is a killer feature.

          played with the eq which helped but overall it still didn't have the sound quality I was expecting, have you compared it to other quality speakers? The Sonos One is a great speaker but not so portable

      It is mostly for people who already have Sonos speakers. It is overpriced if all you need is a bluetooth speaker. With multiple Sonos speakers/amps it is cool to have the same music streaming on other speakers and have the Roam to be able to move it around outside, in the kitchen, etc.

      Get yourself a couple of wonderbooms for the same price pair them up and you have stereo sound…Great bass and sound quality.

      It’s easily the best sounding speaker in this size.

      But it’s also way overpriced if you just want a Bluetooth speaker. If you plan to use it at home a bunch, it’s probably worth it, but if it’s getting used via Bluetooth at the park or beach or whatever, I’d save my money.

    Great device. Have had since released. I used in bathroom, kitchen or at the pool.

    Only flaw is the wireless charging isn’t great and it’s gets warm. Expect to USB-C charge.

    Any alternatives to Sonos for streaming to multiple speakers at once?
    Hopefully cheaper?
    I like the idea of Sonos but have read a lot of mixed reviews and don't want to join an ecosystem that is not good value for money.

      If you've got a bunch of Chromecast (except 1st gen) / Google Home / Google Nest devices, you can create a "speaker group" in the Google Home app. When you go to cast audio, the group will come up in the devices list just like single speakers would, and the sound will play on all the devices at once. So you could get some Chromecast devices to plug into existing speakers / amplifiers / soundbars, and some cheap Nest / Nest Mini / Chromecast-compatible speakers for the other rooms, and you'd be able to link them together like this. A similar thing is apparently possible with Alexa devices, but I haven't tried it.

      If you want to be able to AirPlay from an Apple device to Chromecast speakers, there's a tiny open-source program called AirConnect that you'll find on GitHub; it can run on Windows, Mac, Linux, or on a Raspberry Pi, or in a docker container. When it's running, all your Chromecast audio devices will show up on your iPhone/iPad/Mac as if they were AirPlay devices - even speaker groups. It's not perfect - in my experience there was a fair bit of latency between pressing Play/Pause and hearing the result in the speakers - but at least it makes it possible at all.

      Or, if you're playing from Apple devices, as long as your speakers are AirPlay 2-compatible, when you bring up the AirPlay menu you should be able to select multiple devices at once, and sound will play on all of them at the same time.

      Some audio companies have their own multi-room system, e.g. Yamaha MusicCast, Denon HEOS, Sony Music Center (was called SongPal, think they've rebranded it), etc. Of course, then you're locked into that vendor.

      Or, if you're handy with DIY stuff, there's a Raspberry Pi based solution - check out Volumio, moOde, BalenaSound, or RoPieee.

      You could also look at Roon (which RoPieee creates a bridge for), or Logitech Media Server (LMS, formerly Squeezebox Server) - the Raspberry Pi distributions listed above all support it.

      On the current IKEA Sonos speaker deal, someone's posted a link to a mod for turning the speaker into a standalone mono amp you can hook up to any speaker (some soldering and warranty-voiding is required, but it's still way cheaper than buying a Sonos Amp).

      Or, you could always run all your speaker wiring back to a central location and either get a multi-zone amplifier, or an amplifier per zone + some splitters to connect the same line signal into all the amps. (Or you could run a line-level signal to each room and have the amplifier in that individual room, but depending on how you do it, you might end up with a ton of noise or ground loops that way).

    I know this is a super specific question but I have a Cambridge Audio YoYo (S) which is around 4 - 5 years old - this product: https://www.whathifi.com/cambridge-audio/yoyo-s/review

    I'm wondering what I might expect for the Sonos Roam in terms of comparative sound quality, obviously noting that I'll get the benefits of my App/Multi-room Sonos setup for the Roam.

    I just got one… here's my quick review.

    Pros:
    - Connects to Sonos network. (Actually a killer feature, I can play sound from the TV on this portable speaker, i.e take it outside or to another room).
    - Lets me play bluetooth audio back into the sonos network (similar to above but from a bluetooth source)
    - Type C charging
    - Very small and portable

    Cons:
    - Sound is definitely lacking bass
    - No ability to chain multiple roams off wifi similar to UE's and I think bose.
    - Needs a sonos account / wifi for first time setup (so not as easy as standalone bluetooth speakers, and definitely adds complications).

        On WiFi you get the entire sonos network, which is waaaay better… but I've got an arc, a beam, a sub, a move and two ones… so a lot of sonos gear. I'm being objective here though. The whole lack of Bluetooth only grouping, and sub-standard bass from a ~$200 speaker is a bit crap.

      Wait, so I can connect my android tablet via bluetooth to a Roam, with the Roam paired via wifi to other speakers in a group, and use my android tablet to play to the entire group? Ie. using the Roam to bridge tablet bluetooth -> speaker wifi?

      Instant buy for me if true.

        Yes, and I agree. Definitely one of the better features…. But I'd prefer Chromecast support personally.

          Amazing. I bought 4 xused Symfonisk speakers for $100 each and just trying to find a way to output movie audio from my android tablet. Chromecast has too much lag for video.

          Edit: or maybe I should wait for another Move deal to come around…I assume the same applies.

            @bboT: No, the move doesn't work in the same fashion. Very annoyed. The move has a dedicated wifi / Bluetooth switch, so only one works at a single time.

              @GuniGuGu: Got a used one off FB for $140… Woo it works! Technically anyway…the audio is dropping out occasionally on random speakers within the group. I am running the latest firmware. Will see if I can fix…let me know if you ever ran into this issue.
