Go into a store and try these on before buying the Sony alternative. I bet most people will find these Bose headphones fit much better than the Sony XM4/5. For me the Sony ear cups are too shallow, it's as though the Sony designers forgot that most ears stick out at an angle

    • -4

Can you also try Bose 700 please? Make sure to report back

      • +14

I don't think I tried the Bose 700. Should I also measure my ears with a vernier caliper / protractor? :)

      • I have both, and I find the 700 more comfortable to wear, but prefer the physical controls of the 45.

      • +2

as someone with a bigger head the 700's headband is smaller (ear cups dont quiet sit on my ears when i tried them)

      • 700 earpads are smaller. Still slightly bigger/deeper than XM4’s.

    • +5

Yeap I find the same Bose have a very deep ear cup.
Wear them every day, absolutely amazing quality and comfort. Paid $500 at launch so $300 is well worth it

They've also added EQ adjustments via an update a couple months after launch :)

    • +1

Agree, Bose are definitely superior in terms of comfort

    • 100% correct.

    • +4

My wife have owned wx1000xm2, 3, bose qc 25,35 and bose 700. Sony's fit is tighter but never felt that Sony's fit is any worse. Maybe it's an issue if your ears are bigger. Always prefer the sound quality of Sony though. I am using bose 700 in the past 2 years because of the call quality in noisy environment but just bought a wx1000xm5.

      • +3

because of the call quality in noisy environment

This is why i have the qc35 and not the xm3 or xm4. Its called a compromise. Yes sony sound better but qc35 was way more comfortable for me and the mic was way better.

        • Same for me. If you’re really serious about audio quality you won’t be relying on NC headphones too much anyway.

        • +1

Yeah, I am still rocking the qc35. I had them since 2017, but I love them! I use my AirPod Pro 2 for phone calls, gym, running outside, etc.

My motto is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • This deal is hard to resist!

  • stop it!

  • +3

no low-latency mode. a bit annoying to watch videos

    • Does the XM5 have low-latency mode ?

    • That's why I bought PXC550ii, perfect sync for tv which was the main reason for buying.
I'm happy listening to music with them too. ANC good when on the tractor.
Not fussed about non usb-c, I don't have any C devices yet
      .

    • I think it depends on your source a bit. I got one a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have any sync problems with my phone (Galaxy S21 Ultra), iPad 8, laptops or Chromecasts… It all seemed pretty fine to me.

  • +1

    comparison

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ79F_LdNp8

bose better anc, folds/packs smaller, deeper earcups
    sony better sound quality

    • -1

Those are the Bose 700. Different headphones to the ones above.

      • +3

        No. It’s the QC45.

        • +1

I think I must have just seen the opening image which has the Bose 700 and XM5.

    • Nah. ANC is always better on sony and sound is better too but QC 35/45 is way more comfyyyyyyyyy

  • +1

My Bose qc25ii still going strong. Best headphones 🎧. Duel connection, no issues with laptops or other devices. This is very tempting for an upgrade. Thanks OP

  • +1

Got this for 400 last year. Great solid headphones. Any way to turn off ANC by default? Always turns on ANC on powering on

    • +1

Might be a setting in the app?

    • +2

No, it's not possible to turn ANC completely off. The only two settings are passthrough mode (i.e. "Aware") and normal (i.e. "quiet")

  • -2

This looks the same as the qc35. Did they bother to change anything!

    • +1

That how they make money, with very minor improvements.

  • +1

Just bought a pair last night for $339 from JB…

    • If you get in touch with them, they should be fine to amend the price for you. But make sure you get onto it today while the code is active.

      • +1

        Tried and they refused :(

        • Buy another with the new price/discount and return it with the old receipt!

    • Go back and claim price difference. They will refund it.

      • What is the time window to claim a price difference? I got mine on Black Friday but the JB Hi-FI website only says price match before C&C for example

        • Usually within 2 weeks.

  • +1

why the next door Sony WH-1000XM5 deal has10 times up votes?
I still strongly keep my vote here

    • +1

It was posted 7 hours before this deal, so had more time for people to upvote.

      • +1

Plus this website has a thing for Sony XM's. Must be a preference thing, but I love the Bose's more.

        • +2

Sony has better sound & build, but Bose is more comfortable for long sessions.
Sony is more popular than Bose on Ozbargain, but the reason for the higher votes is because the Sony has more discount than Bose.

    • +1

It was also on sale for $238.20 at DJ just not too long ago. So this is not the lowest price ever anymore.

      • I think it was on sale from Bose during Black Friday as well ?

    • because people like big discounts

  • +1

These are a must for the Tony Abbott ears

    • so long as ears are the only thing you seek to smuggle in them

  • +2

Is this price in-store as well or just online for click and collect?

    • In-store too, but it depends on your luck getting the "right" register staff.

      • I bought it but I needed to tell the staff to apply the discount.

  • +1

Midnight blue is still so expensive

  • +2

I guess it's finally time for me to replace my trusty Bose QC25. I've been waiting for these to die and they just won't give up.

    • +2

I’m in the same boat with the QC35’s… I just want them to die but they do not 😄

      • +3

Trust me you don't want the qc35 to die, they sound better and have a better mic than the qc45. Only downside is the old micro USB connection, other than that they are slightly better quality than the 45's

    • +2

My QC35 still going strong.. Had it for more than 4 years.. Let's see if it will continue to hold up for 10 years

      • Wow lucky you. Mine only lasted 1-2 years tops. Very disappointing considering the price.

      • +1

Yeah I bought mine in 2017 and are still almost as new. Replaced the pads few times but other than that they're the same as day one

  • +3

    Up for Bose.

    Have WF1000xm3 and WH1000xm3, and QC35II.
Sound quality - yeah a bit on Sony side.
    But usability - absolutely Bose:
    - multipoint connect: connect 2 devices prev used at the same time.
    - connection speed: no complain on Bose, but very unhappy with WF1000xm3 as it taks about 30 sec to connect my laptop.
    - Bose app: lets you easily to choose which 2 devices you want to stay connected, this helps me a lot when switching among 1 phone, 1 TV, 2 laptops.

    • Have they changed it so that plugging in (i.e. not using bluetooth) doesn't drain the battery?

      • Have never tried using calbe without ANC funciton. Sorry no idea about that.

  • For those who need to get these below $300, I asked for a JB deal online and flagged that I had a budget of $300 and in the current sale they come down to $305. They brought it down another $5 to $300… you could try for lower I'm sure.

    • +1

Checks out as home office expense for ATO sub 300?

  • Bought one, thanks OP!

  • Oh no I already bought the xm5 (with gift cards!) but I think the qc45 suits me better. What are the chances that I can sell the xm5 at cost price (if not more)?

    • Did you open the XM5?

I've just opened my XM5 and not entirely sure it was the best purchase as it makes some noise with my glasses and not sure on comfort yet

I figure since $350 was such a deal I could sell them as used / near new to someone for cost price if I hate them after a week (as an example) and then I'd try out the Bose.

Trying in the store simply doesn't give you a feel for the long-term comfort after more than a few minutes.

Actually as I type this the XM5 seems to be pretty good, so maybe a false alarm.

  • +1

I have some QC35. Are these much better?

  • I bought these in the black Friday sales. Really happy with them and they're so comfortable

    • How much were they?

  • +4

One store did not allow me to use the code. The register staff insisted that I need to show the barcode from the email. Another store 200m away just did it with no drama. Are they not properly trained or is it just some are high on power trip?

    • Order online and use click & collect. I just did it and they were ready to pick up 6 minutes later.

    • +2

      Staff uneducated

    • +1

Crazy how one company does not have consistent sale policies.

    • I had the same issue ( I do have the email but need to search for it and the queue is long). I was under the impression, other than the excluded brands and items , 10% would applied to my Bose replacement pads. When I was trying hard to go through my emails, this guy standing at the side , told the cashier the code is all over your website and shown her the job hifi website and asked her why she needs to see the email . The cashier unwillingly( annoyed looking) applied the 10% off, saying it’s a procedure to check the email .

They need to train their staff properly and don’t make me sound like I m trying to cheat a deal off them , it’s just 10%.

  • +3

Bought using 15% off ultimate gift cards, thanks OP. comfy headphones will be good for use on plane

  • Just bought it in JB-HiFi, it's really exceptional.
before reaching the shop, it would be better to apply the code in your browser and show to the staff for faster access. (he may not trust ur screenshot.)

    • +2

I showed the staff a cart with a discount code which staff checked with their manager and they refunded me the price difference of what I bought a day before.

  • +1

Does the audible white noise I’m getting mean I’ve got a faulty pair?

    • +1

I have the same thing too… I'm going into store to try on a pair. Apparantly a little white noise is normal but I feel like mine is louder than what I'm happy with. Not sure if the Sony's are better in that regard.

  • Seems microphone is not supported in wired mode? Any pointers to make use of the mic?
