    • -1

      yep tpg is better

    • -1

LOL yeah. Should be 10 minute limit per phone call.

  • +1

How many crank calls can you make in 6hrs. Thanks Telstra :(

I'm not sure if 6 hours will be enough time to call Centrelink and be on hold for hours.

    • +18

Years ago I tested the theory that it was faster to just go in. I called them, and while on hold, went to the local centrelink office, still waited for an hour or so to be seen, sorted it all out, and was still on hold when I left.

      • +7

waited for an hour or so

        That was quick

        • Yeah, have never waited more than 2 hours at the centrelink office, must have been lucky 🙃

    • +2

If you REALLY REALLY have to call centrelink, I find the best way is to lodge a complaint on their website and wait for the call back. The best thing is that the people who handle complaints ACTUALLY know what they are doing, unlike those random, clueless ones you might get when calling in.

      • haha yeah i tried this, took them a week or two for them to call back so, shouldnt be urgent

    • At least they picked up for you. I have a log on my mobile: I rang them 36 times one day and it was busy every time. I gave up and went in person. 🙄

  • -4

can you send sms? I left a job and the boss owes me 5 hours pay. I left a message but no joy. I know he is busy so a sms is the next step.

    • +1

I mean, you could just not hang up for 6 hours…

  • When do they offer free call to Ukraine?

    • +5

You don't call Urkaine, Russian calls you

Vladimir Putin is at an airport and is going through customs.

        Customs officer: Occupation?

        Putin: No, just visiting.

        • Nice one

  • 6 hours at a payphone, bring a foldup chair and a packed lunch

    • Run your call centre from and call tightarse technologies

  • +3

Be sure to redial after 5.59 hours for up to 12 hours free

    • +4

Or let it hang up after 6 hours both times and get 2 extra seconds free!!

  • I’ve seen queues of people waiting in line, coins at the ready, to use a payphone to call home and tell their family and friends they’re safe after a bushfire, a cyclone or some other natural disaster has taken the mobile network down.

Making them free for up to 6 hour calls may not help these people as much as he thinks. I wonder if they could limit calls to 3mins or something (with a warning when picking up the handset and when the time is nearly up) in these situations.

    • It's not to help people.

It costs more to collect the money, then they collect.

They need to provide public phones as part of the Telecommunication licence so they can't get out of it, so what do you do? Provide them for free.

      • Perhaps they should just accept paypass?

    Popular Long Running Deal
(But over 6 months ago, so ok to post)
    Handy reminder.

    • +1

Strange that the old deal gets marked expired so that this deal can replace it… I get having a reminder but why would the mods expire the old deal?

      • Strange that the old deal gets marked expired

        It's not a deal.

Payphones a free permanently since last August…

        • Which deal isn't a deal? The one posted today or the one posted last August?

          • @sween64: Today, as it was the same price as yesterday.

      • That's what happens.
Loses a lot of often useful comments, without having to search for them.

But without a new posting - the old Deal is often forgotten, or never seen.

So a link to previous Long Running Deal (preferably in Deal Description) is good to add to latest Deal.
        Should be standard practice!
        As added to this Deal👍

Wouldn’t this become a security risk? allowing anyone to anonymously call anyone

    • +15

      Oh definitely!

These new payphone contraptions are clearly a security risk in the making! We should enact legislation to ban anonymous payphones - you know the ones you can use anonymously by placing untraceable currency into and making a call and putting on a fake accent! Such a serious concern, unsure how they've survived so many decades out there!

      • +8

The threat is real mate no need to downplay it.

I’ll never forget the day my phone let out it’s shrill ring, I lifted and held the cold receiver to my ear and that emotionless voice filled me with fear:
        “Is your refrigerator running?”

        • It's that you Mr Wall?

        • You'd better go catch it.

  • +3

Wonder if we will see these savings for our dealers passed on in reduced prices

  • Use caution if it rings though and get your life in order before answering.

  • +3

    Homer: Hello, Dean? You’re a a stupid-head.

  • Cheap activity to keep the kids occupied while they vandalise the entire phone box

    • Maybe that's the idea. The queues of people making long phone calls will minimise the vandalism.

  • -1

They've been free since August last year…

    https://exchange.telstra.com.au/why-were-making-payphones-fr…

    • Does that make it the new normal?

  • Good to know when visiting one horse town in the middle of nowhere where no hel$tra coverage you can fone home

  • Why are all payphones Telstra? If their monopoly ended in 1992, why aren't there Optus payphones for example?

  • How can they still call these payphones if you don't have to pay.
