      • +2

        Ouzo

        • +3

          Souvlaki

          • @nikoris: pasticho

          • @nikoris: For the Suvlaki lovers: if you want to eat like Greeks, accept the above average obesity rate.
Eat like African, or in Asia like Vietnamese to get rid of the US style belly ;)

            • @taki: Thats trash talk, if you eat modestly you dont get fat.
Greeks are more fat than Vietnamese because they eat mcdonalds more

              • +1

@nikoris: Those hour four lunchbreaks can't be helping much, either…

                • +2

@UncleRico: is that 'four hour' lunchbreak?

                  • @nikoris: LOL! Spoonerism those damns…

                    • +1

@UncleRico: In Greece they work hard, a lot harder than Australians but the economy sucks.
Being a tradie in Greece sucked, it's a breeze here in Australia.

Not sure why you mention '4 hour lunch breaks', we didnt even get the 30' ones

                      • +1

                        @nikoris: Shameless stereotyping, mainly.

I must confess, I haven't been to Greece since before their Euro implosion but my three abiding memories of visits to Athens were (a) half the city shutting down at 2.30pm each day (b) every tourguide, restauranteur & shopkeep insisting on cash payments because the tax rate was too high if they declared any income, and (c) my attractive, young girlfriend being crudely propositioned by every other sweating man we passed who had zero hesitation in downing tools to stop, stare and pass comment.

Don't get me wrong. Greece is a beautiful country with an amazing history which truly needs to be ingested up close. Likewise, I agree that I know many hardworking Australian Greeks, but my travels left a scar…

                        • @UncleRico: Well, Im in Perth and the city shuts down earlier than Sydney as well. I dont see any argument here.
Also, still you cant really use your card to pay for stuff like here in Australia. Not sure if for tax evasion (most obvious reason)
As for the 'crude propositions', i'd GLADLY take those as opposed to the racist slurs my Asian wife hears from time to time.

Greece is a beautiful country with huge flaws but those guys work hard.

      • +1

Obviously you haven't been to Greece for a while. Marlboro and a tiropita is a bit luxurious these days.

Now its a RGD-branded cigarette which are half the price of brand names. About 12€ for a carton or about 1.5€ a pack down at Menandrou and Sapphous street near Omonia Square.

Contraband cigarettes can be picked up in the same usual places, Marlboro, Prince, etc, with a bit of a saving over the genuine item.

Kala, who is going to spend 1.50€-€2.00 on a tiropta? Even a really basic one from Gregory's or Everest will set you back 1€.

These days it's a Frappe which they will take on their scooter. One hand on the bar, the other holding the frappe and cigarette at the same time. Constantly beeping the horn at every car which is, too slow, stops unnecessarily (for pedestrian crossings, etc) or doesn't keep to the left to allow them to ride like a maniac.

If you really really really need proper food, it will probably be a tost (basically a toasted cheese sandwich)……..or another cigarette.

Gonna give you a +1 before the PC pitchfork brigade spoils your party.

      • -6

Pitchfork brigade here… I'm a little outnumbered, anyone want to join the brigade?

  • Very compassionate to have eat like a Greek and lose belly fat free at the same time

  • +4

I'm sceptical of the loose 10 pounds in a week.

That's 35000kcal. How do you get that deficit when most people have 1500-2500 recommended maintenance calories.

    • The books reference in ancient times where one need to walk several km to buy food each day :)

    • It's not possible in terms of fat loss. Even if we assume a high maintenance of 2,500 calories and 100% of weight loss is in adipose tissue, that's around 2kg of fat per week. Given that adipose is around 10% water weight, that's 5 pounds max.

Although, if 100% of weight loss is in muscle tissue that's around 4.4 kilos of muscle tissue per week. Around 75% of muscle mass is water, so that's 17.5 kilos of weight loss per week, or nearly 39 pounds.

    • +1

Losing about 4kg in a week is definitely possible. I've personally achieved it. From what I've been learning the past few months; the calorie school of thought is not as relevant to weight loss as we once thought. A calorie is a scientific measure of energy.. problem is our bodies aren't a static system which treats all food energy the same. Plus I would guess about half of the weight you initially lose in that week is water weight, which obviously has no calories.

I read the book and don't agree with quite a lot of it, actually. But yeah you'd be surprised how much weight you can shed in a week.

      • +1

For the reasons I posted, and iseeyou expanded on, I think calories are important. Our body doesn't treat all energy the same, yet an excess of calories will lead to fat gain.

If you are saying "weight loss" is allowed to simply be "water weight" then really the best way to lose a kg is to wear a ski suit and sit in front of a heater, we know that's not what anyone means by weight loss.

If we allow water weight to be considered "weight loss" then conversations start to sound like my mates who tell me they "lost 2kg at the gym this morning" and this only makes me wish to lose 500g by blowing my freaking brains out.

Tldr inb4 "how to lose 10kg in a week, cut off your arm at the shoulder".

  • +3

This is possibly one of the least invasive things which one can do "like a Greek"…

  • +3

10 pounds (5kg) a week does not sound like a sustainable loss. Water weight is not a real loss.

I suggest HIIT runs 3 times a week and a 2000KJ daily deficit while increasing protein and wholegrain and fibre

    • +4

I suggest HIIT runs 3 times a week and a 2000KJ daily deficit while increasing protein and wholegrain and fibre

You just need to find a way to repeat this for 400 pages and you too can write a nutrition book.

      • +2

This is a perfect example of everything wrong with the nutrition and exercise industry.

If I'm a fitness blogger I have to write a new article every day about how to get fit and sexy.

"Eat at 500-1000kcal deficit, utilise compound lifts focused upon vertical push and pull, horizontal push and pull, and squats and deadlifts for 2-5 sets of 20-5 reps every 48 to 72 hours, sleep 7+ hours per night, take a megamulti if it makes you feel better, plank and stretch too". Just doesn't make 1000 blog posts over 3 years.

So instead we get stuff like "try spinning around in a circle when you get out of bed to kick your vestibular system into gear". It's absurd.

    • Weight loss as a concept is not sustainable. It's not supposed to be. When you reach the weight your happy with you obviously need to eat more to maintain your weight. I've personally lost over 4 kg in 1 week. When I first experimented with Keto and intermittent fasting. I'm sure half the weight I lost was water - but that shouldn't be dismissed as "not a real loss".

      • +1

Yes it should be dismissed as not a real loss.

        Weight loss is sustainable.

Extreme states of dehydration are not (healthily) sustainable.

If you say you lose 2kg by not eating or drinking for a couple days, and then complain " the weight came back when I drank 2 litres of water " clearly nothing was lost.

No more than I can drink a litre of water and say "oh no I've just gained a kg in 15 seconds, call Jenny Craig".

        • Yes it should be dismissed as not a real loss.

It is and it isn't. If he weighed 100kg and wasn't dieting he would probably still be close to 100 every day for the next week. But if started dieting and went to 96kg in a week he technically hasn't lost weight (bowels emptied, water reduction, etc) but he HAS lost TOO because without starting he'd still be at 100 not 96.

You're right and wrong too. For example if you started at 100, dieted for 12 months, then weighed 80kg… you would say you lost 20kg. You wouldn't say, "I've only lost 16kg because my first week was pooping out all the KFC and water (Pepsi) from a week before."

So this "you only lose water for the first x days" is irrelevant because months later everyone makes the first statement, and no-one makes the second. It only becomes relevant in situations like like women starving themselves for two weeks before their wedding to squeeze into the dress they ordered months ago but now don't fit into. THEY will bounce up to their original weight in a couple of days of eating again. The person still dieting two months on won't. So the statement is only relevant dependent on if they stop or continue.

          • @[Deactivated]: By your logic I gained 500g after the gym today when I put in my jacket.

I'm out of this convo it's a bit dumb.

            • +1

@ozbjunkie: I'm not arguing. I'm just pointing out virtually everyone counts their first couple of weeks of weight loss at SOME point. They're not going to lose 20kg in 12 months but tell people they only lost 14kg because the first two weeks weren't 'real'. Their body weighs less so they count the entire loss.

    • +1

Yeah nah you can't suggest that for the entire population in a blanket statement.

It's gonna be an entirely different scenario for different people. For example, HIIT runs for people who are 300kg and haven't exercised for decades would annihilate their joints, and a 2000kj deficit would not be enough.

People looking to lose weight who haven't done it before should seek professional advice to get them going.
