I had finished the last 1L I got from ozb and thought this was a good deal 🤷‍♂️ sold

    • +4

What you using it for? Can't imagine how ill use 5L

      • +9

I've had 5 liters for over a year now, cleaned out a lot of electronics and used it to remove sticker residue…

Doubt I've used more than 500ml.

5 liters for odd uses is a lot

      • +8

        Washing motherboards and graphics cards.

Basically anything I want to clean but would prefer not to wait till it dries of ALL moisture before using.

5L is really not much if you're in work or hobbies where its called for.

My mate works in a hospital in the US and just drops his watch, phone and keys in a 'bucket' of it while he showers himself.

      • +10

Great for cleaning glass as no streaks, disinfecting without leaving any smell or taste. I keep a a 70% mix in a squirty bottle in the kitchen along with a bottle of Simple Green, great cleaning duo.

        • +5

15% with a drop of detergent makes an awesome general cleaning spray.

      • +6

Need it for resin based printers

      • +2

I used it to prep the car paint before applying the sealant

      • +1

        Cleaning PCBs and Electronic boards.

      • I use 70% isopropyl to refill my Braun shaver cleaning cartridge, much cheaper than buying them brand new.

        • Care to share your method?

        • Yep did the same with my… Oh same brand.

      • +1

Preserving insect specimens. Cleaning marker and sticker residue. Disinfection. Diluting alcohol based paints.

  • +4

'When using as a Hand Sanitiser (recommend 3/4 cup Isopropyl Alcohol and 1/4 aloe vera gel)' handy to know

    I just for a 1l bottle last month for $15 :(

    • +13

Look up the WHO guidelines; you need a small amount of peroxide also, as there are a few bacteria which dont mind alcohol, and can thrive in a DIY mix.

      Otherwise, yep :)

      • +3

Ehh, i'd voluntarily let those live at that point seeing as they were the ones to 'carve out a niche' and 'go against the grain' to be weak to peroxide instead of the predictable and pedestrian alcohol ;)

  • +8

Nice, good to see prices are sane again. Paid way to much for my last bottle due to a certain damn virus.
Besides processing plant matter I love this stuff for cleaning, just real handy to have around.

  • +2

thanks! Needed some to clean my bike disc rotors as well as general household disinfectant

  • I remember when these were selling for $900. Should have sold my opened bottle…

    • +2

Did people actually buy at that price or

    • Really? I didn't even think to look during covid season.

  • Is there any difference to everyday metho? For cleaning at least?

    • +8

Metho has additives to stop people drinking it, I find this can leave residue on glass or such. Also IPA smells a way better I think.

      • +2

Still, close enough good enough imo. I've used metho on my electronics like motherboard plenty of times. Just cleaned some glass doors too.

        Considering the price difference anyway.

        • it has been as low as $20 for 5 liters before covid, at which point it becomes competitive with metho, but no residue.

          • +2

@garage sale: I got mine during that $10 deal a few years ago :D (or was it $5?)
To think it was only a random impulse buy for just the 1 back then lol.

    • Everyday use definitely stick to diggers metho if you don't mind the smell.

I use metho for most things apart from electronics or cleaning glass.

Careful with the metho you choose though, some can have some nasty additives, and you really don't want any that have methanol in them.

Diggers is good. It's pure ethanol with a couple little things to discourage drinking. Those little things make up less than 0.2% of the mix too, so I'd honestly trust it on electronics

  • +5

Identical item is $29.95 at lebeauty.com.au

Spend $49 or more for free shipping.

  • i use metho for electonics as it dries out better than Iso and is a lot cheaper at $4/l

    • +4

Most "100%" iso will outdry metho easily, and you don't have to investigate different brands additives.

That said, diggers brand metho is great.

  • +17

Bought this few months ago from catch and it's very diluted like watered down. Doesn't have same efficacy as some other I have tried from Bunnings or Sydney chemicals.

    Won't buy again

    • +4

Says it’s 100% alcohol so it literally can’t be ‘watered down’ otherwise it’s false advertising.

      • +14

Telling you after multiple uses . It's definitely watered down. Nowhere near 90% even I am sure.

        • +6

I wouldn't be surprised. Other brands like Sydney Chemicals have warnings all over their bottles - even one saying if in contact with skin to wash away with soap and water. This one makes it sound like you can use it anywhere without too much concern.

          • +1

@xlimit: It's isopropyl alcohol, it's not very dangerous. Unless you're purposely trying to hurt yourself it's not a hazard.

It'll dry your skin out weird, but it doesn't burn it anything. I never bother with gloves when using it, and often just apply it to a towel on my hand.
I'd consider it safe for adults.

Can't defend this brand mind you, as I've never used it.

That being said, I just checked my bottles, and you're right, they have several walls of text about safety and storage

            • -2

@Salmando: That's too dismissive imo. Very high concentration IPA should NOT be used regularly on the skin, hence "rubbing alcohol" is diluted. Like pretty much everything it CAN be dangerous if mis- or over-used. Diluted IPA is also recommended for cleaning things like your laptop etc.

              Some good info here: https://blog.gotopac.com/2016/01/06/the-dangers-of-isopropyl….

Another danger of using isopropyl alcohol is poisoning. IPA poisoning occurs when the liver is no longer able to manage the amount of IPA in the body. Your body can handle small amounts of isopropyl alcohol. In fact, your kidneys remove approximately 20 to 50 percent of IPA from your body. The rest is broken down into acetone by enzymes known as alcohol dehydrogenases. This acetone is filtered out of your body through the lungs or kidneys……

Isopropyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin, so spilling large amounts of IPA on the skin may cause accidental poisoning. Small amounts of IPA on the skin is generally not dangerous, but repeated skin exposure can cause itching, redness, rash, drying, and cracking. Prolonged skin contact may cause corrosion. Always wash thoroughly with soap and water when contact with IPA occurs, and always use safety equipment when dealing with large amounts of IPA.

              • @[Deactivated]: It’s diluted to take longer to evaporate and therefor have a longer duration of effect to as act as an antiseptic

                • -2

@ColdFusion: Partly correct, as the link explained. Ditto for ethanol.

Isopropyl alcohol, particularly in solutions between 60% and 90% alcohol with 10 – 40% purified water, is rapidly antimicrobial against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Once alcohol concentrations drop below 50%, usefulness for disinfection drops sharply. Notably, higher concentrations of alcohol don’t generate more desirable bactericidal, virucidal, or fungicidal properties.

The presence of water is a crucial factor in destroying or inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms with isopropyl alcohol. Water acts as a catalyst and plays a key role in denaturing the proteins of vegetative cell membranes. 70% IPA solutions penetrate the cell wall more completely which permeates the entire cell, coagulates all proteins, and therefore the microorganism dies. Extra water content slows evaporation, therefore increasing surface contact time and enhancing effectiveness. Isopropyl alcohol concentrations over 91% coagulate proteins instantly. Consequently, a protective layer is created which protects other proteins from further coagulation.

      • +6

Its 100% false advertising, the question is by how much? It is at most 99%, and thats so unlikely at this price, and in that type of container.

Reason being, this isn't a vacuum sealed container, so moisture will have entered during filling.

Anything over 98% gets VERY expensive to manufacture.

Id almost bet the label means "100% of 70% isopropyl alcohol" or something, just like rubbing alcohol is advertised.

        • -4

          Its 100% false advertising

You are claiming this as a fact and then list your assumptions.

Reason being, this isn't a vacuum sealed container, so moisture will have entered during filling.

How and why would this occur?

          • +4

            @4agte: How? Alcohol is hygroscopic.

            Why?
            Here's a really good explaination.

            https://www.thoughtco.com/definition-of-hygroscopic-605230#:….

Even if it started at 100% which I highly doubt, a plastic container will allow that to drop at least a few tenths of a percent within days.

You'll notice even expensive local medical grade stock will only promise "98-100%" in their msds, because making alcohol in a vacuum is very VERY expensive.

I buy by the 40gal drum, from a chemical specialist, and even in a lined metal container, stored in a 'dry room' they wont promise more than 99.8%.

        • +3

most isopropyl i have only claim 99% due to hygroscopic nature and it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, so 100% would be specialized and expensive to package.

        • +1

Pretty common container and percentage claim for the majority of this stuff you'll find for consumers.

Sydney solvents send their product like this, at a decent price, with the same claim of 100%.
I've used there stuff and it evaporated surprisingly quicker than the majority of 98% and 99% materials I used in anal volume before hand

    • +8

Thanks for the real world usage review.

If you say it's watered down, then I'll trust you on that because why would anyone lie about this for?

      • +1

You trusting him on that is at your discretion. But exercising that trust or lack of trust does not warrant nor have to entail a neg (not saying you did). Trusting him may be reasonable. Not trusting him may also be reasonable. This is how silly I think some downvotes accumulate on Ozbargain

edit: i'm assuming you're being sarcastic. but if not, then well played, you deceived me well. What i say still stands though

        • +1

I'm not being sarcastic and I didn't neg him lol

    • +5

Dunno why you're being negged to oblivion. You're literally someone who has used the product and attempted to compare it with competitors.
It says it's 100%, so it can't not be, right?!

    • Bunnings doesn't even sell 100% IPA. Also I dilute my 99% IPA to 70% to clean electronic shavers and there's no discernible difference in viscosity or smell.

How on earth are you ascertaining this is 'very diluted'?

      • +7

I have isopropyl that I know is 99.9% pure. Compared to that, this evaporates a lot slower and leaves some kind of film residue.

        • Yes, exactly, this takes ages to evaporate . The diggers brand I bought from Bunnings evaporates quickly and while cleaning adhesive residue, it works much better, but this brand needs a lot, possibly 3 times the amount to clean similar area

        • +1

          I trust you.
The difference in evaporation between 100% and 99% is quite noticeable, but neither usually leave residue.

          Wonder what this stuff is.

    • a hydrometer would quickly confirm this which many people who use this volume of IPA would have. It would have to be far below 99% to be noticeable.

    • +1

Any chance you could weigh it? Isopropyl alcohol is far lighter than water so if it weighs significantly more than 785g per litre then your suspicion would seem correct.

      • Including plastic weighs 4kg

      • I just weighed 100ml approx and it weighed 76 grams. Chance I didn't quite get 100ml in it

    • +3

Do you still have some left?

There is a very easy way to test its purity, and that's by weighing it.

Isopropyl is significantly lighter per volume than water. 1 litre of 100% isopropyl will weight 785g at room temp (approx 25c). Water is obviously 1kg.

Scale it to 100ml…. If it weighs significantly more than 78.5g then it has been diluted.

  • +1

What could I possibly use this for?

    Ordered.

    • sterilizing tattoo needles is a possible use …. but it’s a great metho replacement because there are no additives that can leave residue…. haven’t bought metho in 3 years, just use iso and buy it when on special.

      • Sorry, I was being sarcastic, I love this stuff. I managed to stretch a 250ml bottle for one year so I don't know how long this will last. Lots of uses though!

    • +1

I use it clean my N64.

… Also a lot of other electronic components and residue removal.

Unless you genuinely need something to not have residue, you're better off going to Bunnings and buying the metho, which the boondal? brand is pretty much pure ethanol and can be easily distilled into a gin if you're bored so its safe use while being cheap enough to literally shower things in.

  • +7

    Saturday night predrinks sorted

  • Last time I bought this stuff it was about $17 delivered…

    • +1

How long ago was that ??

Either way it’s too late for me … I’ve hit the order button already 🤣

    • +4

'Last time' being before market conditions were drastically affected by a certain airborne virus that sent everyone into panic mode?

  • Thin your Tamiya acrylic paints with it.

  • Whos drinking this? Fess up.

    • +2

I'm reluctant to try. It metabolizes into acetone, such sounds a little distressing to me.

      I'll stick to metho

    • +2

Considering using it to make tincture … with the amounts used per tincture dose (1 drop) the 'drinkability' issue is irrelevant: the issue is its performance in extracting the relevant substance from the (ahem) relevant plant matter .

(Plus, you can't get Everclear in Oz, for the same reason that weed is illegal… us humans have to wait for the death of the last Mrs Jessup wannabe: not many people know, but Femina Semi-Sapiens MrsJessupensis is the only thing more sanctimonious than Karen from HR)

Anybody know where I get can cheap not so diluted Hydrogen peroxide?

    • Not sure if this is too diluted for you.
      https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/5440/hydrogen-peroxide-3-(10vol)-200ml

      • Very diluted, only 3%!

    • Hydroponics suppliers.

      • Cheers!

    • +1

If you search google for Hydrogen peroxide + 30% you can find a few places.

      https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3A.au%20Hydrogen%…

Not sure you'll get it cheap though, it's classed as dangerous good - so will need to be delivered via courier, increasing the price.

Also, may need to fill out an EUD depending on what state you're in.

      • Cheers!

        • Depending on what you need it for (and whether quality is important or side ingredients).

You might be able to look up a conversion from sodium percarbonate granules -> hydrogen peroxide.

          • @lysp: Difficult?

I want it for general Disinfectant, i.e. toothbrushes, dishwasher, washing machine l, benchtops etc.

            • +1

@JimB: You can probably just use it directly. It costs about $20/kg:

              https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=sodium+percarbonate+…

Basically just add a teaspoon to warm-hot water (you don't need much at all).

The solution breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and soda ash (washing soda) and remains active for about 5-6 hours. Eventually it breaks down into just oxygen and water.

Pure stuff will irritate eyes and skin - so wear gloves and some eye protection to be safe.

Fully submerge what you want cleaned in it, and soak for 10-20 mins. Then just rinse off with water.

This is the active ingredient in laundry cleaner, plus also used by beer/brewery cleaners to clean all their equipment before use.

A video showing it being used for different things is here:

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlfgcrR790c

The video creators are a bit annoying in their delivery, but it shows lots of different variations of it's use.

Also, safe enough to tip down drains/toilets after use - will help clean them too.

              Edit:

Another video showing other uses for oxiclean (the brand name which uses SP as active ingredient):

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33v5P4rEar8

              • +1

                @lysp: Many thanks,

I know of sodium percarbonate aka napisan, didn't know it broke down to hydrogen peroxide.

                Learn new stuff everyday.

Odd you can get 1kg of Aldi napisan which is 1/3rd sodium percarbonate which equates to $15 a kilo of sodium percarbonate. The balance of ingredient is largely sodium carbonate.

Cheers and thanks for the tip

  • +11

People joking about drinking this when just consuming even a little bit can kill you. Just doesn't really go well with me as there's always one idiot out there who will read such things and try it 😐

    • +2

yep, the word alcohol can attract the wrong people.

    • +4

Or, you could word your comment in a similar style to those directly above and say

"Great to clean those incompetent enough to try that, from society!"

      /j

    • Metabolizes into acetone.

Weirdly enough, if you do drink this with regular alcohol you should be fine, though it will be almost entirely disregarded by your body and you'll pee it out in a pretty pure form which will hurt.
But if you do drink some, the best way to avoid poisoning is to consume large amounts of ethanol.

      • -2

Thanks for the advice Donnie. Presumably it's best to drink it in sunlight?

In case anyone takes your comment seriously, from my link above:

Isopropyl alcohol can enter the body three ways: ingestion, inhalation, and absorption.

The first way is most direct, and easiest to avoid. Since ingesting IPA causes rapid intoxication, people sometimes drink it when conventional alcohol is unavailable, or as a means of suicide. Ingesting isopropyl alcohol has an immediate effect on the central nervous system, which controls the involuntary actions of the body, including heartbeat, breathing, and gag reflex. Isopropyl alcohol slows these functions and may shut them down altogether. IPA is so strong that it can induce hypothermia and subsequent cardiac arrest. The blood’s thinning also causes blood sugar levels to fall so sharply that seizures may result.

        • +1

          Thanks Mr wiki.
I'm not suggesting you do drink it, which was clear.
I stated that in the event some idiot uncle drank it thinking it was funny, then feeding him decent amounts of ethanol will prevent poisoning.

          • -1

@Salmando: Sorry, I was suggesting that your idea of pumping a "large amount" of ethanol into someone as an antidote might work better if done in sunlight. It's odd that no-one else appears to adopted your idea for IPA poisoning first aid but history shows that medical advances sometimes come by pure accident.
