10% off Ultimate Home, Everyone, Celebrate & Birthday Gift Cards (In-Store Only, Surcharge May Apply) @ ALDI

    What surcharge?

Do you mean the card payment surcharge? That's surely going to be applied at Aldi, if you pay with a card at Aldi.

    • Well I remember Aldi charges their own payment surcharge on GCs. I bought an Ultimate everyone from them once and only had $495 something loaded onto the GC.

      • I paid $500 tho.

        • +2

          1 percent thats rough

    • +3

I added Surcharge May Apply to the title, because:

      • You must pay a 0.5% surcharge if your card payment is routed through the Visa or Mastercard networks.

      • You pay no surcharge if your card payment is routed through the eftpos network (or if you pay by cash).

      • +6

That's good to know that eftpos has no surcharge!

BTW, I only recently learned that with my most basic Commbank card (the one that lots of people have), when I use my iphone to double-press the on/off button to get the card, the card image appears and I can "choose payment option" just below it: Mastercard vs Eftpos SAV.

        • +2

I still have not been able to figure this out on Android. Any tips?

          • +3

@elecpurch: Just insert your card instead of tapping and select CHQ or SAV. Not CREDIT.

            • +1

@AkuroPlays: What direction should I be inserting my phone? and will it fit?

Elecpurch was referring to how Commbank allows EFTPOS or Debit via tapping your phone on iOS. A quick search suggest it could be possible, but I don't have an Android phone I can't confirm it does work.

          • @elecpurch: Might depend on your phone. My S22U has the option but Pixel 8 pro does not.

        • TIL eftpos

      • If you insert your bank card and press savings account, no surcharge applies on any purchase.

  • Does it apply to the variable Ultimate Everyone?

    • usually it doesn't. its always the set amount cards. ymmv

  • No eBay no deal haiyaaa

    • More like no 15%, no deal

      • Agreed.

      • 10% isn't good enough to be considered a deal anymore? Yikes.

  • Is it possible to buy GC and pay with GC ?

    • -1

      No, this never works

      • I used the supermarket gift cards from shopback. They work fine

  • i just got a bunch from woolies with 20x points. waiting for that deal again to grab some more.

  • +1

    Any mention of a limit?

    • All previous ALDI gift cards promos, regardless of the card, have followed a 5 card limit. Although previous deals suggest this limit isn't enforced.

  • -1

I am looking for Airbnb cards 😬

  • Anyone know how long the expiry is for these?

    • +1

3 or 5 years depending of how new card is, it's listed at bottom of FAQ linked in OPs post.

  • can you buy these with TCN Eftpos gift cards?

    • That would be awesome. Any variable value for the ultimate gift card? So convenience to have just 1 card of $500

  • Stares at the semi-complete aldi building in my area

    • If you state for long enough, the cards will appear.

  • Is there a $200 denomination?

And we should be able to pay with the SB supermarket gc right?

Also, can we buy these at self checkout?

    • +2

      Is there a $200 denomination?

I have never seen a physical Ultimate gift card sold in a fixed $200 denomination.

I also just came back from an ALDI, and out of the gift cards in this deal, I saw the following:

      • Everyone: $50, $50-$500 variable load
      • Home: $100

And we should be able to pay with the SB supermarket gc right?

Probably? If it does work, remember to factor in the 0.5% Visa surcharge into your calculations.

Also, can we buy these at self checkout?

      I don’t think so.

I tried to purchase a Pocket Money gift card through a self checkout, and as soon as I scanned the long activation barcode, the checkout displayed the long activation barcode number said “item not found”. I had no problems purchasing that gift card through a standard checkout.

      • Also worth considering that (to my knowledge) ALDI doesn't do split transactions for card. So for example, if you got a $300 SB Supermarket giftcard then you could get 3x $100 giftcards at ALDI but would need to bring $1.50 in coins to pay first before using the SB card ($298.50 + 0.5% = $299.99). Sounds like a headache for an extra 1.75% discount

        • +1

Why would I need coins (in your example)?

If I had a ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card with $300 on it and I bought 3x $100 Ultimate gift cards through this deal, I would not need to worry about split payments with cash.

After discount, the 3x $100 Ultimate gift cards cost $270. Factoring in the 0.5% surcharge ($1.35), the total amount ALDI would charge to the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card would be $271.35.

          • +2

@WookieMonster: Oh good point, forgot about the discount for a minute lol. Will be balance left on the other gift card which is probably best used at woolies/Coles with split payment

            • @nicholasv: Trying to school the gift card master and you get schooled!

  • Anywhere you can still get cashback on ebay gift cards these days?

    • just the usual low percentages from your regular cashback places

      • Like? Which places are you speaking of? They don't exist at all on Shopback or Cashrewards. Superswap has dropped ebay as well.

        • Oh yeah true, I am just used to having access to rewardgateway and redeemyourgiftcard so I have not really noticed those changes.

          • @Jollystacker: redeemyourgiftcard's no longer accepting applications right? It's a bit frustrating most have pulled away from offering discounts on eBay cards.

            • @pixxelpusher: Reward Gateway is $9.75 a month and usually has the highest rates for most cards and has eBay.
Redeemyourgiftcard is meh, I have had to chase them up for gift cards since you do a direct transfer to them and give them your order number. But I have free access with them because of one of the super accounts I have.

    • +1

You can purchase a Your Pick gift card at 3% off through the Everyday Rewards app and you can also stack that offer with the current bonus points deal on Your Pick and other Woolworths Group gift cards. The Your Pick gift card can currently be swapped for an eBay gift card.

      • +1

Thanks! That's exactly what I've been looking for.

  • Is 15% off a thing of the past?

  • Coles have 20× point on ultimate gift card next week which may be better deal compare to this one as coles do not charge credit card surcharge (which Aldi charge 0. 5% and in coles you can earn credit card points additional 0. 6%- 2% cashback depend on your card) and also you can covert to virgin point if you prefer travelling.

  • +2

    Clearer picture here

    Terms:

10% off Ultimate Birthday $50, Ultimate Celebrate $50, Ultimate Everyone $50, Ultimate Everyone $100 and Ultimate Home $100 gift cards purchased from 8/5/24 to 12/5/24 and subject to availability. Discount is applied to the value of the gift card. Limit of 5 cards per customer. Offer not available with any other offer. Please refer to individual cards for usage terms and conditions.

  • So if you buy $100 do they charge you $90 on card

    • +6

If you scan a $100 gift card in this deal at an ALDI checkout, the checkout will ask you to pay $90. When you proceed to payment and elect to use a card as the payment method, the final cost will depend on the payment network used to process your payment. As per the deal description and one of my earlier comments:

      • If your card payment is routed through the Visa or Mastercard networks, ALDI will apply a 0.5% surcharge, which means your card would be charged $90.45.

      • If your card payment is routed through the eftpos network, ALDI will apply no surcharge, which means your card would be charged $90.

      To further elaborate:

      • If your card only supports Visa/Mastercard, you will always pay the 0.5% surcharge at ALDI.

      • If your physical card supports Visa/Mastercard and eftpos (i.e. is a dual-network card), when you insert or swipe your card, the EFTPOS terminal will ask you to choose between SAV (eftpos), CHQ (eftpos) or CR (Visa/Mastercard). If you choose CR, the EFTPOS terminal will display a message saying you will need to pay a surcharge. You will be asked whether you are okay with paying the surcharge before you can continue with payment.

      • If your physical card is a dual-network card, when you tap your card, the EFTPOS terminal will not ask you to choose between SAV, CHQ or CR. The default for tap payments from physical dual-network cards used to be CR (and thus incur the 0.5% surcharge at ALDI), but I have lately seen tap payments from a physical CommBank Debit Mastercard be routed through eftpos instead of Mastercard (and therefore avoiding the surcharge).

      • If you use a card from a mobile wallet (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet), your payment will be routed through the network chosen on your device. Some banks will let you choose between Visa/Mastercard and eftpos for their dual-network cards on some mobile wallets, whereas others will not let you choose a payment network on your device at all. If you cannot choose, it usually means your payments will go through Visa/Mastercard.

      • +1

        Thank you

      • I usually tap my 2% cashback HSBC visa debit card at Aldi for groceries and never get charged a surcharge. Is this only for gift cards or something?

        • Are your payments routed through the eftpos or Visa network?

          • @WookieMonster: I'm not sure how that works as the cashier is the one who's processing it I just tap

            • +1

@sub102: The ALDI cashier does not control whether your contactless payment from a goes through eftpos or Visa/Mastercard. It is something decided by Commonwealth Bank (who processes payments for ALDI).

If you ever grab the receipt, it will tell you whether your payment was a Savings (eftpos), Cheque (eftpos) or Credit (Visa/Mastercard) payment. It sounds like ALDI is forcing contactless payments from physical dual-network cards through eftpos instead of Visa.

Keep in mind that HSBC say they only pay out cashback on contactless transactions from the physical card processed through the Visa network, but they may in reality still pay out cashback for contactless transactions from the physical card processed through the eftpos network.

              • @WookieMonster: I'll check my receipts and let you know if it says visa or EFTPOS. Thanks for the info

              • @WookieMonster: Receipts I have all show 'eftpos SAV' so HSBC definitely should be paying cashback on it as all my ALDI transactions have received cashback. Also cashiers (or ALDI) must be by default doing EFTPOS when cards are tapped because mine has happened too many times for it to be a coincidence. So I'm baffled why all others are getting charged a surcharge

                • +3

                  @sub102: Keep in mind…

                  • Contactless transactions from a physical dual-network card on an EFTPOS terminal traditionally saw the transaction routed through the Visa/Mastercard network, because eftpos did not support contactless transactions for a number of years. Even today, a lot of businesses still default their contactless transactions on physical dual-network cards to Visa/Mastercard, but the Reserve Bank is pushing merchants hard to adopt Least-Cost Routing (i.e. routing payments through the cheapest network) as a way to reduce transaction fees for everyone.

                  • ALDI used to default contactless transactions from physical dual-network cards to Visa/Mastercard, but this probably changed a year ago. I witnessed my mate tap his physical Commonwealth Bank Debit Mastercard on the EFTPOS terminal at an ALDI self-checkout a few months ago, and the receipt said the payment was routed through eftpos (SAV). A lot of people saying that contactless transactions from physical dual-network cards at ALDI get surcharged are probably saying that due to their experience before ALDI (or Commonwealth Bank) changed how they routed such transactions, or are basing this on how such transactions are currently being handled at other merchants.

                  • If you add an HSBC debit card to a mobile wallet, you probably will not be given a choice between eftpos (SAV) or Visa (CR) on your mobile wallet, which means your contactless transactions from the mobile wallet will always be routed through Visa (CR) and therefore attract the 0.5% surcharge at ALDI.

                  • ALDI staff cannot choose on their checkout which network to route your payment through. Now I think about it, the only business where the staff member chooses on their checkout which network to route your payment through is Australia Post.

                  • @WookieMonster: The transactions at Aldi I was referring to date up to 6 months back. So in conclusion 2% cashback with no Aldi surcharge should work for everyone tapping their physical HSBC card at Aldi for transactions below $100. Correct me if I'm wrong

          • @WookieMonster: I get the 2% cashback meaning it doesn't go through as EFTPOS

            • @sub102: Then you would've been charged the 0.5% fee. I phone tap my HSBC @ Aldi and get charged the 0.5% fee.

              • @CVonC: There's no point of phone tapping it as you wouldn't get 2% cashback nor works as EFTPOS to avoid the surcharge. But I swear I've not been charged the 0.5% fee ever. I'm just as surprised as you

                • @sub102: Umm I've gotten 2% cashback for all my Aldi phone taps. I'm on Android (Xiaomi Poco X3 Pro) using Google Pay with no choice whether to use EFTPOS or VISA.

                  • @CVonC: Oh I thought HSBC are very particular about tapping the physical card to receive 2% cashback. Good to know

        • +2

i noticed, a month or two back, that when i tap at ALDI, HSBC automatically goes to savings, no surcharge, yet i still get cashback. win win

  • Odd question, has anyone tried paying for a timezone party using these GC's?

    • forgot they still did parties haha

  • +4

For anyone interested, Blackhawk Network updated their website today include the following retailers on the Ultimate Birthday and Celebrate gift cards:

    • Birthday: Nando's, Rubi
    • Celebrate: Kathmandu, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys

(I have already updated the table in the description to reflect this.)

  • Makes sense to buy the ultimate everyone card (most retailers), no?

    • Yes, BUT!
The variable load ($50-$500) denomination for the Ultimate Everyone gift card is excluded from this deal.

      • So just get the $100 Ultimate Everyone card?

        • Yep, that's what I was implying. 😃

  • Does anyone know of any discount gift cards can use at Costco?

  • Can you use multiple gift cards to purchase, say, a MacBook Air from Officeworks?

    • +1

Yes. You need to add the card to your phone and tell OW staff to split payment

    • I was able to use over 10 Ultimate physical cards to make my split payments at a local Officeworks. Swiped all of them one by one followed by their PIN. No issues!

      • The staff at my local OW tried multiple times with physical card and could not make it work.

    • Yes, bought a Iphone 15 Pro Max using multiple GCs, no issues at all. The staff were very kind and patient.

      • Question about the 15 pro Max, did your store have stock? None near me have stock atm but online it says that can do click and collect for Monday. If yours didn't have stock, then did they place and order for it to come in and collect another day?

        • +1

No, the store didn't have any stock.
I went in the store and placed an order (Sunday) for click and collect, they ordered it through the warehouse, it arrived at the store 2 days later (Tuesday)
The entire payment was done using Ultimate GCs.
I also price matched with Costco, ended up paying ~$1850 in the store (in effect paid $1665 with GC discounts)
          Got a good deal IMO.

          • +1

@HHH-888: Legend! I just went in too about an hour ago and did a price match with stock being delivered Monday. Also signed up to onepass before I paid so hopefully 5x flybuys points coming in too

            • +1

@nicholasv: Great call on OnePass, I’m a subscriber too and did scan my flybuys, can confirm I did get 5x points, ~$43 worth, bringing the price even further down. Sorry I forgot to mention that in my initial response.
It’s a great device, I’m sure you will enjoy it :)

              • +1

@HHH-888: I got lucky and the cashier told me to sign up and they took over the swiping of my cards 😂 Thanks for the tips though, and glad it worked out well on your end too!

  • I just bought 5 ultimate home. No surcharge when I inserted card and chose saving.

    • There's never a surcharge when you insert and choose savings.

  • Double check before paying, Willetton hasn't got the deal active yet. Apparently expecting it to be adjusted by this afternoon.

    • +1

I can confirm that the promotion still isn’t active yet in WA due to some computer issue apparently. They’re not sure when it’ll be resolved.

      • Is it active now for WA? Have you finally bought some?

        • Just checked again, still not working…

          • @aliasneo2000: Damn. For the whole WA? That really sucks. Promo ends on this Sunday. Otherwise I’ll wait for next Coles/Woolies in June.

            • @hawkeye93: Yeah, apparently. Given it's been two days with no resolve I'm not super confident!

        • I can confirm it is still not active yet in WA. I went to Thornlie store this morning around 10am and it's still showing full price. Can anyone advise us once activated? Cheers

          • @ryryry01: Oh so the issue is WA. I tried just now and still not working

            • @sub102: 😤. I’m going to a store in WA in an hour. Will see if it works.

              • @hawkeye93: Did again like 30mins ago but they're not doing it. Now saying they not selling any in the promo even though they are all in the shelves

                • +1

@sub102: I successfully got them change the price when checking out. See my post below.
