Do you know of any Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon that is relatively affordable in Sydney? I don't have any insurance. And not old enough to be a pensioner.
My bottom wisdom tooth is rather naughty. You can see the image. Dentist won't do it.

You may be able to get a low income health care card and then apply at the dental hospital
Wisdom tooth removal can cost anywhere between $250-$500 per tooth.
My partner had 2 out at a time in the chair, healed quite fast and very little swelling.

I've had my top two wisdom teeth out, and I have one left in my lower jaw (I am missing one from birth). The one in my lower jaw is below the gum line and isn't really causing any issues - it's been there forever, I'm 52.
I had to have the top ones out because they were interfering with how my jaw was opening - i.e. it hurt to open my jaw, I could barely fit the knuckle of my index finger between my teeth.
Also, not to be too dramatic, but pulling lower wisdom teeth comes with the risk of damaging the nerve there and leaving you with half a numb face.
Thanks. Sorry I didn't see your reply earlier. I'm seeing a surgeon today to ask for his opinion actually. It's causing pain to the adjacent molar, so I think i need to get it out. But yeah, let's see what the expert says.
It's not so much the tooth extraction that's going to be the big big cost but the hospital and general anesthesia.
The surgeon will still cost around $350-500 per tooth (maybe 700 if it's very complex and needs to be shattered and extracted).
If it's not urgent, you can try see if any will operate from a public hospital which will save you some of the overall cost.
Not just the cost of the surgeon - check the anesthetist's cost as well if you need one.

Yep! Admittedly it was a very complex surgery - but the comparison was bizarre.
So when you are getting quotes, make sure you remember to ask about ALL extra things that go into the surgery! You don't want a big surprise afterwards.
Well if the anaesthesiologist is just one decimal point off your daughter dies, so probably worth it.

For years, I had this same thing. Dentists would send me off for a scan and then tell me to leave it because it's sitting right on the nerve - unless it's causing too much trouble (pain). And if I wanted it out, I would have to be put under in hospital to get it out.
I came across relatively young dentist one day and had a chat to him. Turns out that he was a teacher at the dental school. He sounded so confident and said that the other dentists were just scared of being sued. Booked in two days later and I was out of his chair in no time. He also pulled out the other tooth that this wisdom had severely impacted (and decayed because I left it for so long) . It was two extractions for $650.
Mate. If only I know a dentist like that. Thanks for sharing. I'll monitor my situation. If the pain keeps coming, I'll get it out, no matter the cost. There's a good chance it may cause more damage the longer I leave it there.

Do you have a public dental hospital in Sydney? I recall people going to the one in Brisbane that was staffed by dental students.
Incidentally, that was used for the filming of Harrow!
You could contact some dental schools in Sydney and see what they say. Your income sounds too high to qualify, but worth a shot anyway.

Go to Thailand or Hungary and get some implants/bridges while you're at it if you're missing teeth, and some cool veneers. Though if you're older than 50 then I wouldn't go as white as Tom Cruise's teeth, they look like dentures, 61 year old teeth don't look that white.

He is a specialist so he is relatively expensive & you need a referral. Dr Naim has replaced 5 of my teeth with dental implants which included bone grafts, They were not all done at once rather over the last few years. I am very happy with the results, very comfortable with Dr Naim & would not go to anyone else. I worry that if you are looking for a cheap option you might get an unsatisfactory result.
Not from Sydney, but WA and just did mine 10 days ago to give you some idea of costs. had 4 removed under general anaesthetic (one from each corner), bottom two were both horizontally impacted (similar to yours). top two at like 45 deg outwards from top row of teeth. I got mine done in a day surgery of a private hospital in perth
Maxillofacial surgeon cost $1755 for 4, each tooth was $420 + 75$ fee. I got half back on my private health insurance, ofc YMMV
Anesthetist fee was ~$580 (this was covered by my basic private health plan).
I was on my parents' health insurance until this year, so I got my own basic plan. luckily as I was on their plan did not have to serve waiting period. Most PHI have a 12 month waiting period for this sort of procedure
all up (including own PHI): 1400 (PHI) + 500 (excess) + 1755 (surgery) + 0 (anaesthetist) - 877.5 (PHI claim)= $2777
PHI Covered day surgery fees too. Without PHI, wouldve come to 1755+580 = 2335 + any hospital fees (~400 or 500). Realistically not really any different.
Whole thing took about 3 hrs on a friday, have had the last week off work, back to work today. Pain/swelling was minimal first 1-3 days, swelling + pain pretty bad on days 4-5, then gradually better and back to normal yesterday.
Not to be rude, but how old are you? i recall my maxo saying something about getting it done earlier rather than later before the nerves get difficult to deal with. If you're like >25 yo, recommend getting it done under general. the impacted tooth can cause neighbouring teeth to decay.
not to shill for maxos or anything but in Aus they have to trained in both medicine and dentistry prior to surgical training. if i went thru all that i'd probably charge a decent bit of coin too. Plus your mouth & teeth are important, not something i feel you really want to cheap out on.

Yeah. It's good that i learned some basic numbers. You know not all surgeons charge similar rate. There're people who want >5k from what I heard.
May as well get both out at once if you're paying for anaesthetist and hospital.
Did mine at a Maxillofacial Surgeon in Westmead (private practice) 5 years ago. Didnt have the level of cover for this so I took out the cover and waited 12months as it wasn't urgent. The quote before PHI rebate was in memory about 2k -2.5k done in the chair.
Top tooth (not impacted took 30sec to remove), impacted tooth took about 40min.
