[PC] Free Minecraft: Java or Bedrock Edition for Minecraft Owners of Either Edition

1770

Enjoy :)

You might be immediately wondering: What if I already own one of the two editions? Do I need to buy Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition if I want to have both? The answer is a big, resounding NOOO. Sorry, that was louder than I intended. Starting June 7, all players that have either Java Edition or Bedrock Edition will receive the edition they do not currently own for free, right in the Minecraft Launcher. So if you own Java, you’ll get Bedrock – and vice versa. You don’t need to do anything to claim this, but please keep in mind that it might take 2 to 3 days for the game to show up as we roll it out to all eligible players.

To be clear, Java and Bedrock will remain separate games with their own distinctive features. The only difference is that now you get both by default when buying Minecraft for your Windows PC, and access them both from the same launcher.

  • Wait so how do IGNs transfer? Do you get a new one if you have the other?

I'm guessing it's all linked to the Microsoft account you've associated with the game??

Thanks Being Askhole, I've checked and claimed/installed.

about to enter into my annual minecraft phase! see you guys in two months!

  • Damn, hopefully console gets included

  • +9

Glad they are doing this because it was quite confusing for new people buying the game.

  • +2

Which is the cheaper one to buy if you have neither?

My son plays it on Xbox gamepass and Android, but I suspect he will want to play on PC in the future..

    • +3

If he already has Gamepass Ultimate (the one that includes gamepass for PC and xbox live gold) I believe both versions are on that.

      • Yes we have Gamepass Ultimate but only ever use an Xbox Series to play… but I wonder if it's worth just buying the PC version to have both editions for life?

Not sure I don't know that much about Minecraft, unlike my 8 year old!

        • If you have Gamepass Ultimate, that lets you download and play a whole bunch of games (including Minecraft) on Xbox and PC.
When your son starts to play on the PC, all he needs to do is log in with his Xbox account and he can use the same Gamepass Ultimate subscription to play.

No need to buy now if you intend to keep the Gamepass Ultimate subscription. Once you stop the subscription, you can then pay for the game if you want.
Of course you can always pay for the game now, but then from a financial's perspective (even though it really is not much) it's bad use of money since spending that amount isn't really generating any value.

PS: If he's playing Minecraft on Xbox that's the 'Minecraft Bedrock' (not the Java) version. It seems like Microsoft is pushing more towards having people go towards the Bedrock version. The only reason Java is still around is because that's the original version (before Microsoft bought out the company that made Minecraft).

          • @YeboMate: Thanks for this, really appreciate it! I'm not up on Minecraft.

We have GamePass Ultimate for the next couple of years but I was just thinking we might pick up for PC if (or when) it's cheap, as we might not have that sub for ever.

He currently still plays Minecraft on 2DS, WiiU and Android and on the Xbox so it's money well spent I reckon! He mainly sticks to creative mode though, basically using it like Lego.

    • I bought a cd key for the windows edition for something like $1.50

      • Oh cool thanks, can't argue with that!

Is it just off eBay or a specific site?

When they originally bought out mojang, they offered this for a while. Then they just….stopped. Last time I inquired about getting both, they told me to go (profanity) myself.

Nice to see they're finally doing it….again. GG everyone they forced to buy 2x in the last what, 5 years?

    • vanilla, java minecraft used to be hosted on a website as a browser game for free. was useful to 'try out' minecraft without purchasing

      • I didn't buy it because that demo really undersold how awesome the full version was. Got it years later and it became one of my all time favourite games.

Bout time because when I bought beadrock I couldent play java on the officla launcher if I had bedrock installed it pissed me off I had to use technic launcher for vanilla

I bought a $1.00 key years ago for the Minecraft Win10 Edition, when it was given out to owners of the Java version.

All I can find now is Minecraft Xbox Edition for €3.89.It is an Argentinian key which requires you logging in to redeem.microsoft.com via Argentinian VPN server, but I am fairly sure it doesn't include PC access at all.

That reminds me that many years ago there was an Android store sale where a new app went on sale for 99c each day, and Minecraft Pocket Edition was one of them, which I think later got rolled into Minecraft bedrock. I wonder if that gives valid access to Minecraft Java edition now, for a second account.

This is awesome! I bought the Windows store version ages ago using bing points and always thought it was stupid to pay full price for the JAVA version of a game I already own. Glad to see that waiting 5 years finally paid off.

  • But this doesnt work if you have the windows 10 edition right? This is just if you have Java you get Bedrock and vice versa? Or am I reading it wrong

Now I have to go hunting to not pay $30 for Java.

    • Yes it does work

    • I just bought the Java edition (which now includes Bedrock edition as well) for Windows 10. If I want to play on other platform (Android, iOS, Mac, PS4), do I have to buy a copy for each platform? Or does having Java/Bedrock mean I already own it on all platforms?

      • +1

You have to buy each platform, but you can play using bedrock against other platforms. Java is PC only with mods. At least thats what I understand.

        • +1

The JAVA edition is what you run on Macs. So you should just be able to download the Mac JAVA version from the Minecraft site, and login with your regular details (which are a Microsoft account these days).

Android, iOS and PS4 I think are their own application. And probably need to be purchased seperately. (Thought I haven't tried)

  • Does this work if I don't already have either edition?

    • You still have to purchase one, to get the other for free.

      • Right but it I purchase minecraft later, does the deal still work?

        • That's a good question, that I don't know the answer to…

  • Finally, this should've been the case from the get go. It makes no sense to me that the two community needs to be fragmented. Java for life for me, but bedrock is great for multiplayer.

  • Do you get anything if you already have both?

    E. Like some ingame currency or something?

    • +3

There's nothing to buy in the Java edition. You can just mod everything into the game. Servers can be freely hosted too, including modded ones.

  • So you only get the other version if you own the one of the version in Windows right?

I only have Minecraft in IOS, it doesnt seems applicable for this one

  • +1

If you have Java, Bedrock isn't worth much to you unless you've been hankering to get it on Xbox but didn't want to buy it twice.

If you have Bedrock (i.e. you purchased Minecraft on Xbox), you can now get Minecraft for PC (Java). Java/PC is great because there are countless mods/ mod packs that can be used with the game to effectively make it a different game. For example, you can get RLCraft (like Elden Ring, but Minecraft), or Vault Hunters (like Fallout, but Minecraft). Lots of fun to be had - Java can be used almost like a game engine for other games.

With Java, you also have access to 'snapshots' which are the newest test builds of the game, featuring all the new content before it is officially rolled out.

If you own neither games and are looking for a bargain, this probably isn't for you.

  • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate family sharing doesn't work on Java version, only Bedrock & Dungeon :(

My account has XGPU, I can get the Java for free & play it. Same with Bedrock & Dungeon.

But my son's acc whom sharing my XGPU sub, can't play Java version at all. It can only Play Demo version.

  • So I own Minecraft in my Microsoft account and I own MC Java in my Mojang account.

They have been trying to get me to link those two together but won’t I miss out on a free version of MC? For example if my Microsoft account is linked to a new mojang account then will I have two java accounts?

    I don’t understand.

  • I bought the XBOX One S Minecraft version with game code included, I don't suppose I get the PC version with that, or do I?

  • So…. whats the diffrernce?

I bought Minecraft decades ago for about 5 EUD when it was in beta, so pretty sure i have java but know next to nothing about it honestly

Similar gameplay but diverged slightly. Java best if you’re a pc gamer who doesn’t want to play with bedrock players (on PS, mobile etc). Java advantage of being more moddable than bedrock. It’s a little less user friendly/steeper learning curve imo but fine if you’re older than 10

Welp I already shelled out for both for my kids on PC. Plus bedrock on mobile. Plus bedrock on PS4. All is peaceful right now bc they’re side by side in front of the fire with one on PS4 and other on PC both doing their own minecraft thing (one is killing and the other is building).
