Time of Use Tariff to Single Rate Tariff

Hi,

Does any one know how to change from time of use tariff to single rate tariff for electricity ? Retailer is quoting $60.50 and this is what I found on their website. I have a smart meter and think this should be a simple remote change . Any one has any idea on this ? Is is like once the meter is configured for Time of use it stays the same till reconfigured (paid)? Wonder how this works for rental properties then as a previous tenant can restrict what the next tenant's plan is ( unless they pay to reconfigure the meter ) ?

This fee may be charged where a customer requests a change, removal or installation of an electricity meter. It is to arrange metering-related goods or services for you with a meter provider (MP) or distributor.

The fee is $60.50 (incl GST) for ACT, NSW, QLD, SA and VIC customers.

Are you asking because you have just installed a smart meter and your supplier put you on a time of use tariff? Or you have always been on a time of use tariff and want to switch?

I was on single rate tariff and installed a new solar system. As part of the installation, I got a new smart meter installed and Origin (NSW) changed me to a time of use tariff plan for a while which i didnt realise. When i got my new bill, I requested to change back to single tariff and Origin did it remotely for me. So it is possible, if that is what you are asking. Reconfiguration fees might apply but Origin waived it for me.

    • I moved to a rental property, recently and the option the retailer said I had was to choose Time of use even though they had a cheaper single tariff plan . I got my first bill and when I compare in energy made easy, it also shows me cheaper single tariff plans . I now want to switch as I can see cheaper options but not sure if paying over 60$ is worth it on a rental property. I'm also with origin but they did not say they could waive it' Let me ask them again

      • Never hurt to ask. But it is possible so maybe negotiate a bit.

        • I asked once and they mentioned about the charge but I'll ask again

Do you mean time of use, or controlled load? Because controlled load is wired differently to the meter and would cost money to physically change.

    • Time of use with peak, off peak and shoulder rates

I think only smart meter support time of use. I don’t think you need to change your meter to go from time of use to single rate.

    • Exactly my point. Wonder why they need to charge over $60 to reconfigure it remotely

  • You call up your retailer, and ask to be put on a single tariff plan. You do not need to change the meter

Retailer is quoting $60.50 and this is what I found on their website.

Not clear what you meant there - did you call them and that’s what they’re quoting, or you look up your retailer website (eg Origin) and checked the price of new meter fee and assumed that’s the case?

    • I asked on chat and the customer care representative told it will cost me $60.50 to reconfigure which I feel is excessive

      • I'm only assuming you asked how much to change the meter, and confused the rep.

Go on chat again and ask what single tariff plan you eligible for your address and go from there. You don't need to change meter

Do I need to go on to a time-of-use rate with a smart meter?

You do not have to, but you may want to.

If you have a smart meter, you can stay on a flat rate, which is where there are no price changes for different times of the day when you are using energy. You may need to shop around to find a retailer who provides flat rate tariff to customers with smart meters.

  • Time of use is cheaper for certain applications, why are you going to change it ?

I pay off-peak : 12.79300 c/kWh and peak : 26.84000 c/kWh and the electric water is heater is running in the off-peak time. I also do laundry, cooking, use electric room heater (winter) etc in the off peak time as well.

    • I compared with my existing bill in energy made easy and the cheaper plans shown for me are single tariff ones. May be I am not getting a benefit from time of use based on my usage

    • Also my peak is rate is like 44.xx $ so much higher

  • I switched for single rate to TOU and dropped my bill in HALF. Have you compared plans on www.energymadeeasy.gov.au?

I'd be interested to see where a peak-only plan is cheaper than TOU

    • Yes , I compared and single rate plans are cheaper for me. Hence asking how to switch

I guess what plan is suitable comes to usage and times of usage

  • Going back to single rate can be difficult. They seem determined to keep u on TOU.

I managed to do it when I transferred to Simple Energy but it took some insistence as they said it couldn't be done but couldn't show me a document that said this was the case.

Unfortunately, when I transferred to Click that put me on TOU and Click has now been eaten by AGL.

    • Retailer told me it was possible after they reconfigure my smart meter, but I had to pay the price of $60.50 . Did not make sense to me as they charge same to replace an electricity meter probably by sending some one. Reconfiguring can be done remote is how understood as I'm on a smart meter

      • There was no meter reconfiguration AFAIK (possibly remotely) but I was new customer so maybe they ate the fee.

It should not cost you anything. Compare different companies,
others may be cheaper, others may not charge you that 60 bucks

Just jump to another retailer with huge pay om time discounts and join in bonus. You might get the discount on the meter change fee too. Origin rate is never competitive anyway. Same with agl and energy Australia. But you need to do the homework on their meter reconfiguration fee to see if it ending up cheaper.
Last time I was with Lumo and got my meter reconfigure for solar they applied the 40% pay on time discount on the fee too.
Another option is joining retailer that only do single rate tariff only. Some of the no frill retailers do this to simplify their plan structure. And their rates are usually cheaper too. There were some posts on whirlpool about this when some bloke in Victoria's United distribution zone get forced to ToU and use this trick to avoid paying higher rates.
