[ACT,NSW,QLD,VIC,SA] Free Express Delivery for eBay Plus Members in Metro Areas @ eBay

1530
This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

If you live in a metro area, you will be automatically updated to free express delivery.

eBay Plus members in metro areas will be automatically upgraded to free express delivery on eBay Plus listings. To support sellers who are providing this top level of service, eBay will fund up to $41 of the express postage upgrade cost on these orders. We'll apply the contribution automatically at the point of transaction, and for a lot of sellers this will cover the cost of the express upgrade.

We recommend you only charge buyers the upgrade cost2 from standard to express postage to make your listing more appealing to all buyers.

Source

  1. eBay's maximum contribution is $4. For example. if you're charging $2 for the express upgrade, we will cover $2. If you're charging $7, we will cover $4.

  2. For example, if your carrier charges $6 for standard postage and $10 for express, then you should only charge the buyer $4 for express postage. There is a $15 maximum express postage cost for badge eligibility.

    Still no match for Prime.

    • +11

There are plenty of items on eBay that aren't available on Amazon. Amazon AU is still no match for eBay AU unfortunately.

      • +3

Except Prime have Video, Music and Books, and the fact that the most of the stuff ebay have are free shipping. The only exceptions are the ones that deliberately uses eBay Plus to lower sale price and hike up delivery.

        • Prime Video is a joke at this point. Prime Music users are few and far between. I know plenty of people with Prime who are on Spotify & Apple Music.

          • +4

            @ExtraSalt:

people with Prime who are on Spotify & Apple Music

Then these people are either unaware of Prime Music or have a lot of money to spill off …

            • +2

              @TaurusHead:

or have a lot of money to spill off …

Or they're part of a Spotify family which makes it dirt cheap to subscribe to. :)

            • @TaurusHead: I have a paid Spotify account, as well as Prime.

Does Prime have the same range of music? Is there a way to move existing playlists over to Prime? Spotify is kinda expensive for the amount that I use it.

            • @TaurusHead: …or they want better quality streaming, discovery & interface + family plan makes it dirt cheap

            • +1

@TaurusHead: You know there's two tiers of Prime Music and you have to pay an additional $12/m for Prime Music Unlimited.

          • +4

@ExtraSalt: The office, parks and recs, community, the expanse, the boys. Stat trek Picard, won’t call that a joke

            • -4

@t0087669: The Office - great show, 10/10 but old
Parks and Rec - Good show but old
Community - Good show but old
The Expanse - never seen it
The Boys - overhyped, great concept, average acting
Picard - not my cup of tea but a couple guys at work watch it and say its a great show.

…3 current shows is hardly a argument but i do appreciate that both video and music streaming is inclusive of the 1 sub.

          • +2

@ExtraSalt: I have Prime and honestly can't be bothered with Prime Music after trying it for a day.

          • +4

@ExtraSalt: I am enjoying the series on Prime Video, e.g. Jack Ryan, Covert Affairs, Taken, Treadstone etc

            • @Buy2Much: ye nah i didnt mean that they are shit. some people here just took it out of context. The current Amazon Prime library compared to the US is a joke and has a few years to go to be a selling point imo.

          • +1

            @ExtraSalt:

            Spotify & Apple Music

Is it '&' or 'or'. Why having two?

            • @No ONE: 'or' lol my choice is GPM though because of the 50k song upload feature

          • @ExtraSalt: there are good shows on prime video.

the included tier of prime music is terrible - couldn't find too many songs. Plus I didn't get along with the iOS interface, so I paid for Spotify instead - much nicer experience. Having said that…. alexa voice search on prime music was pretty sweet.

        • +1

Except Prime have Video, Music and Books,

That doesn't help anyone who wants to buy an item that Amazon doesn't sell.

          • @eug: Conveniently left out the second half of the sentence?

and the fact that the most of the stuff ebay have are free shipping

            • +1

              @dyziplen:

Conveniently left out the second half of the sentence?

That part didn't seem relevant because there is plenty of stuff that does not have free shipping.

You also seem to be forgetting the numerous eBay Plus exclusive deals that have had plenty of upvotes here.

Prime is simply not a replacement for Plus right now. They are different offerings. At this point you cannot compare the two as both marketplaces don't sell exactly the same items.

      • Free 1 Day Delivery

    • Not for me - I have Plus and Prime and Plus is more useful for the purchases I make.

    • +3

They are apple and orange, so complementary to each other. Amazon warehouse the goods and ship on behalf of sellers. Ebay sellers are responsible for their own shipping. Amazon provide other freebies like cloud storage, video and music. EBay cater for the secondhand market as well as auctions. I am making good use of memberships on both.

    • eBay had effective free plus for a year promotions…

  • +2

Finally a decent incentive to eBay plus membership

    • +7

$50GC to sign up to a $49/yr subscription, free 30 day returns and ye Express delivery is what you needed to sign up?! lol

      • I think EBay has replaced the $50 GC promotion with this:
Score $0 Insertion & Final Value fees on your next 5 sales* + unlock every Plus benefit for only $49pa.

      • In my case, I signed up to Ebay Plus for a whole year (nil promotional offers besides initial month free), but did not let it renew after 12 months given minimal benefits.
Then when I saw the $50 gift card deal being mentioned everywhere, I was interested again, however when I asked their support chat, I was not eligible, since I did not received that targeted email.
Getting rejected from that $50 GC promotion despite having been a paid customer in the past, just makes me bitter.

  • +3

So will we see a small increase now to cover that upgrade cost? So even if you don't want express you will need to pay for it?

    • As a buyer no. Free means free.

      • +1

Generally free postage is included in the price of the item. So if we're getting a free upgrade and eBay is only covering $4 worth to the seller then the sellers may increase the price of the item by the difference.

        • +1

Yeah I guess that's true, any excuse for a good ol' jack.

  • +2

Not for big stuff though "There is a $15 maximum express postage cost for badge eligibility"

  • +3

I don't know if eBay can compete against Amazon with eBay plus, seeing Amazon is centralised to giant warehouses they get stuff out real fast,

eBay has individual sellers with individual warehouses/shops so they don't have a across the board speed matched. But eBay does have allot more small businesses especially in computer parts at better prices but doesn't match it with pantry goods.

eBay really needs to have more review sections on their sellers items , it's hard to sometimes know if a product is good or not other then the sellers feedback which might not reflect well on their products though

    • +7

Amazon is also generally more expensive and holds less variety compared to eBay/eBay Plus

      • +2

That is going to change in a couple years as the amazon vendor program rolls out to more people.

        • +3

ye i agree over time it's going to improve tenfold. But at this moment from launch 'til this day people are fighting for the Amazon Prime train when in reality beyond it's fantastic service and business strategy it's not equal or better than eBay Plus in it's offerings. It's just different imo.

  • +10

It looks like a lot of capital cities aren't "metro" according to that list… Perth, Darwin, Hobart miss out …

    • +3

Or SA. It's really just east coast and metro.

      • Edit: Actually I can see SA in spreadsheet now, no WA/NT/TAS though.

  • +4

Ebay is getting a bit desperate with things!! How about they drop the fees instead.

  • So this means we are going to see more SD cards and thumbdrives deals soon?

  • Metro includes Albury, Cairns, Newcastle, Latrobe Valley - plenty of places besides the capital cities.

    • +1

But nowhere in WA, NT, or TAS, and only Adelaide in SA.

      • After Adelaide, the next biggest "cities" only have populations of of 20 - 25k.

        • Perth?

          • @morgs640: No, Perth is in the next state over.

        • Perth has almost 2 million, Hobart is 240k, and Darwin is 150k.

  • Not related to this deal but I received an email if I join eBay plus I get 5 free listings $0 Insertion & Final Value fees.

Just about everything is now eBay plus to get incentives which was free before.

    • Final value fees have never been free.

      • +1

When ebay offered free listings $0 Insertion & Final Value fees.

        • -1

When ebay offered free listings $0 Insertion & Final Value fees.

You're talking about special promotions then. They still do that. It looks like they target accounts that aren't actively used to encourage people to use them. My other account just got an offer (sell 10 items with $0 FVF) on the 16th of Feb. That account does not have eBay Plus so it has nothing to do with eBay Plus.

      • +3

They used to give out no final value fees all the time, ie 10 of them every few months, $1 total sells on Sundays etc

Now they've stopped I don't bother selling on Ebay.

  • Might be an OK perk if you also get a targeted deal to sign up - they seem to change all the time. Got this one today:

Join eBay Plus & Save on Selling Fees
Score $0 Insertion & Final Value fees on your next 5 sales* + unlock every Plus benefit for only $49pa.

  • +2

Haven't bought anything from ebay for years since Amazon arrived.

    • +2

      Cool story, bro

      • Thanks, glad you like it

  • +5

    Excludes WA, NT and TAS

  • +2

There are so many conditions and small print to this, it makes 'eligible items' look like valid bargains :(

  • +1

EBay's T&Cs and fine prints for the various promotions are getting more complicated than the Aust tax laws :-p

  • +1

What, the list miraculously stops just before postcode 6000. So not for WA / Perth Metro… I guess WA does stand for Wait Awhile…

  • +1

So people in non metro areas but also have ebay plus miss out.

    • +1

Yeah but we get cleaner air and less traffic so it all evens out in the end.

    • +2

because there is no NDD for areas outside the aust post metro footprint, no point going express

      • +1

Sshhh….your critical thought has no place in these comments!

      • I just googled NDD because I had no clue what that meant and found Australia Post’s page that said that 80% of Australia is covered and although NDD is not guaranteed for non metro areas, it will still be delivered as fast as possible.

  • +2

i buy rubbish from ebay which mostly are not ebayplus items, i buy many household items via Prime such as toothpaste, toilet papers, soft drinks etc, the beauty of Prime is, the delivery man just dumped it outside my door, whereas ebayplus would only ask me to collect from local post office if i ever buy any.

this is the end of my story, hope you like it. thanks.

  • Nice

  • -6

Screw you eBay, ineligible as usual.

  • This is actually pretty good. There's a few instances where an item I buy already has free postage from the seller, so eBay plus didn't help. But now with express postage included, it turns those losses into wins

Thanks for telling us OP, I would never have known.

    • I think it's only if the eBay seller offers express postage.

  • Just tried to use it now. Only starts 1 April.

  • For the item I'm interested in, the two eBay Plus sellers offer express post: one for $14.95 and the other $50 (not kidding)! Clearly the second seller cannot be bothered walking to the PO or yellow boxes!

Edit: tried on the first item, no discount?

  • Merged from EBay Plus adds Free Express Metro Delivery for EBay Plus items (Excludes WA, NT and TAS)
    Go to Deal

I just got an email that says that.

EBay Plus will now give you free Express Metro Delivery on items marked EBay Plus, when you are buying.
List of metro postcodes is here

(If you are selling; eBay only contributes $4 towards the cost of Express Metro shipping)

The link doesn't help with further information.
Googling isn't finding much more information about the deal.

Kudos to DeathSparrow for finding out the states excluded. Excludes WA, NT and TAS

    • -2

EBay Plus will now give you free Express Metro Delivery on items marked EBay Plus.

      Who does their deliveries?

      • Don't know.
They just provide a link to a page that offers EBay Plus items and mentions there is this new service.

If you click on Learn More, it just takes you back to the same page.

    • +3

      Excludes WA, NT and TAS…

    • +1

This should also be a PSA for sellers, eBay doesn't actually tell you this but you as the SELLER are required to pay the difference as eBay plus only covers $4 for the express shipping upgrade from standard

      • What is the actual price difference between express and standard for those items that qualify?

        • +1

Depends, I sell collectible cards that usually go for about $5 and post them via envelopes for free (cost is $1.10). Express shipping is charged at $8.50 (eBay and PayPal also charge fees ~14% on the shipping cost), so for me that is not feasible.

          • @Sir Flabo: I assume they know how much regular postage costs, so they should know who would be worse off and not upgrade shipping on those listings. Have you had any express upgrades?

            • +1

@eug: They're quite out of touch and they don't have the ability to process it case by case - or so they say.

I have had quite a few express upgrades and have had to manually cancel them as I the "opt-out" function is currently broken for eBay plus and I refuse to manually increase standard shipping costs or to remove the express shipping option.

I didn't even realise they had purchased express post as the shipping value was so low, so several posts were sent slow and the buyers were unhappy and had to be refunded in full… It's not a great implementation by eBay

              • @Sir Flabo: In the end, it should be good for buyers which is good for sellers. Will probably mean sellers increase their standard shipping costs to accommodate the difference if enough people sign up to ebay plus

              • @Sir Flabo:

had to manually cancel them as I the "opt-out" function is currently broken for eBay plus and I refuse to manually increase standard shipping costs or to remove the express shipping option.

Set your listings to not allow returns? Will disqualify you from Plus. Problem solved.

        • for items I sell Express is ~$10 more, so out $6. But if I don't do it, then they remove the eBay Plus logo, for whatever that is worth these days.

    • For sellers, some possibly important information

      https://tamebay.com/2020/03/ebay-plus-australia-update-ebay-…
      Norton cleared this site

eBay will fund up to AUS$4 of the express postage upgrade cost on these orders …
bound to be a few complaints from sellers who suddenly receive orders with express shipping where AUS$4 doesn’t cover the upgrade, but then it’s not obligatory to participate in eBay Plus Australia.

(Relates to what @Flabo was saying)

      • While not obligatory, it is also not currently possible to opt out of eBay plus without downgrading your service to the point where you are no longer eligible (I've tried)

        • This makes it sound like, you have to opt-in as a seller, to be listed as eBay Plus. Is that not the case?

          https://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/ebay-plus-and-retail-standa…

Not only are we merchandising and marketing eBay Plus inventory in exclusive sales events, we're also running special offers for sellers with eBay Plus-badged listings. Check the My Promotions section in Seller Hub to see if you're eligible.

          • @SomeGuyOnOzB: I don't believe I ever "opted-in", however, most of the criteria that makes your listings eligible correspond with being a "top-rated" seller and offering "premium-service".

Those buzzwords are obtained when you meet certain criteria and will boost your listing's availability in searches. Ebay plus also boosts your listings too, so for you to lose both is takes quite the toll on your sales

      • +1

So basically it reduces incentive for sellers to list as an eBay Plus seller, meaning eBay Plus will lose further value.

Given the pricejacking, the reduction in sales when compared with 12-24 months ago, and more sellers opting out for eBay Plus or being highly selective of what items are part of eBay Plus free shipping, I don't see why I would renew my membership.

    • I've been getting free express on Plus items for the last 2 months. Pretty sure they introduced this when Plus Month started on June 1.

      • I think that was meant to be time limited, it seems to now be as kept as a standard feature of eBay plus

    • Looks like Ebay's trying to get on par with Amazon Prime membership that offers expedited shipping.

    • The way Australia post and other couriers do slow delivery it will probably take a week anyway!

  • It attracts more buyers to eBay
