How do amplify points compare to frequent flyer points?

  • What are the points worth

    • $675 approximately.

      • +1

Would apply the Amplify Qantas Signature for 90K points for $139

90K points worth around $1080(1.2cent/points) or more if you use it for flight

        • +2

Plus a $75 annual Qantas Rewards Program fee
          So 90K points for $214

        • +3

$139 applies to existing St.George customers. New customers $295.

          • +4

@Sideswipe: i applied for a fee-free 'Everyday' account to become an existing customer, then applied for the CC

      • Rip off.

  • +4

    12k spend, not ideal
but there aren't many good deals at the moment heh

    • +1

Yeah they've tightened up so much. A couple years ago I was making bank on these cards.

  • $15,000 minimum credit limit! Ouch. I am too poor.

    • this is becoming more common for these premium qantas-point earners unfortunately.

  • +9

Doesn't seem like a good deal compared to other churns where you get the same reward but for say a $3000 spend.

    • -7

such as? this gives almost $600.
is there any other card, gives gift cards?( not for flights).

      • +6

ANZ Rewards Black? $600 profit on $3000 spend.

      • +6

        NAB Rewards Platinum Credit Card

Spend $1,000 in 60 Days and get 120,000 NAB Rewards Bonus Points (~$550 in gift cards)

      • Get this…$0 annual fee - 90k points -$3 spend in 90 days. If you have had a Westpac card before, or are an existing customer…(or change the promo code in the URL..worked for me the first time).

        https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

        This deal…they are dreaming!

        • How many flyer points is 90k Westpac points?

          • @KaitoKid1412: think it's 45k velocity

          • @KaitoKid1412: Exactly the same as this .. depending on who you convert to.
            Ie. Velocity 2:1

            • @tunzafun001: That's quite good, 60k velocity points for $1000 spend?

              • @KaitoKid1412: I went with the 90k (45k Velocity) first 3 months.
There's another 30k points if you pay the annual in the 2nd year, but I took the 90k for $0 and am currently churning/ battling with CBA for a saver awards card. Something like 70k points for $0 (small $3k limit is handy) If you have a CBA home loan.

But, my experience has been a shocker and I'll be taking my loans elsewhere.
AFCA can deal with this application.

    • +4

Agreed, this is the opposite of a good deal.

Suncorp, ANZ, NAB all have better alternatives.

      • -2

This is a great deal. Just know one knows how to use it and it's valued incorrectly.

  • Existing customers who currently hold an Amplify, Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card issued by St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA, or who have held one in the last 12 months, or Credit Card Product Switches, upgrades or Westpac group staff are not eligible for this offer.

    • I also find that if you have been card churning regularly, they tend to decline even if you earn well over the required amount

      • Yeah, definitely the case with Amex

  • Need to cancel a few cards first before applying for this one lol

  • +5

    Bahaha $12,000 spend.
This is terrible, would be a waste of 4 churnable cards

    Tell em they're dreamin.

    • +1

But it's over 12 months spending period. Which means you need to keep the card longer (4,5,6 months) instead of 1-2 months churn. They know what they are doing !

  • Would we get the points as soon as criteria is met (12k) spend or only after 12 months? If former, ppl need not wait and can close as soon as points credited

  • Not a very good deal with the $12k min spend required. Yes, you may have to pay more in annual fee but if you split the 12k spend across a few credit cards, the total sign up bonus received will worth more than the difference in annual fee most likely.

  • +1

And St George's application process is terrible, they also don't include investment income from rental properties in the income figure they use to determine if you qualify for the card. Terrible bank.

    • +1

Well…unless the mortgage of the investment property is fully paid off, then that income isn't really disposable income as it needs to go into your mortgage. Or so for most cases (negatively geared investor). They can therefore not take it into account. If it is a positively geared property you could show them that, even then only the excess difference would logically be taken into account.

      • How so if the rental payments cover the mortgage? You have simplified that a tad , and I know other banks don't follow the same approach). Anyway, my point is they make it very difficult to get the card, their service is rubbish, and you are probably dodging a bullet not dealing with them.

        • +1

          Similar experience for me !

        • If they include the mortgage in your debts but not the rent as income, you missed that part in your message.

  • $12k spend JFC….

  • +1

Yea $12k minimum spend is a deal killer. Even amongst all the St George cards the Platinum is a better deal which gives 100k points for only $3000 spend and $0 annual fee.

  • -1

Be careful with them. They must have tighten their approval process and don't like churners. They have rejected me last year and this year as well - 8 months apart.

But I can apply for Citi and ANZ without problem after SG rejected my application.

  • -1

This is a good card for high spenders as it's an uncapped earn rate every month.

Most cap the point earn every month, so not for the churners really

    • +1

If it's a big spender, wouldn't they just go for AMEX?

      • -1

Always good to have a backup non Amex

  • +1

I have had this card for almost 5 years now. Moving away from them soon.
    Positives:
    Priority pass
Low annual dee for the first and subsequent years compare to similar products
    Uncapped earn rate
    Shopback offers
Additional 10% of all points you have earned during the year on your birthday

    Negative points
    Terrible customer service
They recently changed conversion rate to Krisflyer
Minimum spend to get the bonus

  • +1

If you're churning for FF points I think the Qantas platinum card is the sweetspot.

    $124 for 70k QFF on a $3k spend with $6k limit
    vs
    $214 for 90k QFF on a $6k spend with $15k limit
    vs
    $0 for 50k VFF on a $3k spend with $6k limit
    vs
    $199 for 75k VFF on a $12k spend with $15k limit.

I don't think 20,000 points is worth $90 considering you have to spend double with 3x the credit limit. You could just churn 2x $6k limit cards instead.

  • This card is ok when the conversion rate to KF is 2:1 which means you will get 75k miles, but no longer the case since August last year.
