Benefit of Using 7/11 My Card via Digital Wallet?

No one is ever going to accuse me of being an early adopter of anything phone/app related, hence my question. 😁

I got an email from 7/11 saying their My Card can now be added to a digital wallet. I still need my phone to access My Card whether I do it via the 7/11 app or the digital wallet, so what is the benefit of using the digital wallet instead?

    None

  • Very slightly quicker to access card I guess, and you might(?) be able to add it to apple watch

The main advantage in the immediate future will be that you will be able to pay for fuel at the bowser instead of having to walk into the store and interact with a human. This functionality should be rolling out pretty widely over the next year or two.

No doubt there will be many promotions over the next couple of years encouraging you to set the functionality up and you may as well wait until there's some kind of bonus associated with doing so.

Ultimately 7/11 is looking to drive most in-store transactions onto their platform, and the company has already invested millions of dollars in setting up the technology, so no doubt there will be member pricing and similar deals over time to push you in that direction.

Why would they want people to bypass the store? That's where the ridiculously marked up items are for sale.

    • This functionality should be rolling out pretty widely over the next year or two.

Caltex/Woolies petrol stations had this functionality ~10-15 years ago, and got rid of it (presumably to get you in-store to purchase over-priced impulse items). Not quite sure why 7-11 thinks anything would change now.

      • Not that we're the same at all, but this is the case for the USA and they still have plenty of people purchase things from the store there regardless of whether they need to go inside or not.

      • The old system required a separate credit card machine to be installed at each bowser, which would have been expensive and prone to failure due to exposure to the elements.

The 7/11 app just requires the browser to have a QR code stuck on it.

Ultimately the app is intended to get rid of staff entirely. You will have to self checkout everything with the app while store cameras and AI are tracking you to make sure you don't nick something. (This is not tin hat stuff, that's the actual system - there are trial stores already open that have no checkouts at all https://www.itnews.com.au/news/7-eleven-australia-to-deploy-… / https://insideretail.com.au/news/7-eleven-opens-checkout-fre… )

    • future will be that you will be able to pay for fuel at the bowser instead

will you be able to get a coffee at the bowser?

Yes. Same bowser, you just press different buttons.

        • Awesome… thanks…

  • I've heard someone's theory that being logged in on multiple devices can get your account blocked. Being able to add 7/11 to your phones wallet would let you redeem it on one device while using another device to lock in the price. Of course this can also be done by taking screenshot of your barcode.

The can still tell the device id from the wallet.

      • kind of, for iOS, they get the device library identifier which

is a PassKit-specific shared secret between the user’s device and your web server. It is not related to the device identifier (UDID). The device identifies itself with a different ID to different servers and it may change its ID at any time. Its purpose is to allow efficient communication between the device and your server, not to let your server keep a list of of what passes are currently installed on a device. The device library identifier uniquely identifies a device and indicates that the entity making the request is authorized to make such a request.

        (emphasis mine)

    • You cannot take the screen shots now. It's blocked by the app

      • I was able to take a screenshot with an Iphone 6. Or you can take a photo with another device.

      • Ironically, (at least for their apple wallet pass) their pass definition has "sharingProhibited": false

I've not actually tried to add multiple passes though, theoretically (from memory) it should work though!
