  • I am with orgin , so is it good to transfer to them?

    • +2

I'm with Origin as well, but when I look at Energy Australia's rates, they're adding on a demand charge so I went with the Westpac/AGL $200 credit offer instead.

      • Thanks for sharing! I have been with EA quite some time, should really consider moving now.

  • If its only applied to the first bill, does overpaid credit stay on the account?

    • +5

The AGL one said first bill, and it really meant $200 credit gets added to your account on the first bill. In fact, the AGL member portal said the account was $200 credit from the day it got opened. I imagine this operates in the same way.

      • I'm asking because I believe it was Simply Energy? Or Engie? They had a similar promotion where it gave $$$ off the first bill, but if you first bill was under that amount (they charged monthly), you lost the rest of it.

        • +1

Wow. Must have been in their fine print? I’ve had my first AGL bill and I’m still in credit.

        • +3

Strange.. i am with simply energy / engie, the credit lasted few months for me.

    • Yes indeed the credit rolls over to the next bill. Spoke with both AGL and EA earlier today and they confirmed its a credit to the account.

  • Would Cashrewards $105 also stack?

    • It does stack. Messaged their support to check last week when I signed up.

    • Confirm that it does stack, at least last year when I did it. You do have to stay longer for the cashback (check terms in Cashrewards)

      • How long do u have to stay?

        • For me it took 4 months.

        • Cashback when I did it said takes up to 180 days. Was recommended by TA not to transfer before cashback was confirmed. I think I got mine around 3-4 months.

In case you were wondering, Energy Australia is a Chinese Company not an Australian Company.

    • +8

So we should pay them in yuan instead?

      • Or baby formula.

    • +1

According to Wikipedia: "CLP group Founded January 25, 1901; 123 years ago in Crown Colony of Hong Kong."

Found in Colony of HK 123 years ago. The same year that Australia became independent and years before CCP was found.

    • +2

In case you were wondering, Energy Australia is owned by the Hong Kong stock exchange listed company CLP Group. The Company was founded by the Jewish Kadoorie family and they still own 35% of the Company including a 19% stake held by the Chairman, Sir Michael Kadoorie.

      • -5

        China Light and Power Group.

You do realise Hong Kong is not a country and part of China right?

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong

        • +3

The company was incorprated in 1901 when HK was not part of China.

You can stop digging a hole for yourself. You tried to be racist but it has no basis.

          • +2

@suti1: Racist because I want to support Australian owned companies and not foreign owned energy companies pretending to be Australian companies. Ie Energy Australia.

            • +2

@Austrian Oak: Hi Austrian oak :)

            • @Austrian Oak: Austrian oak not liking a company that is owned 35% by a Jewish family. The irony…

            • @Austrian Oak: So you don't trust your govt and USA have done proper due diligence on CLP when EnergyAustralia is not just a retailer but also owns power plants?

Make sure you check the electricity and gas distributors in your area cuz they might be owned by HK companies (and in your case CCP companies).

              • +1

@sfac: Trust a goverment that's selling off our critical infrastructure to foreign companies whose only goal is to maximise profits where the money is sent offshore.

No, no i do not. Then you wonder why we have an energy, housing and cost of living crisis. Neg away.

What is a new customer defined as? If we had an account with them in the past, are we still eligible for this deal?

    • If you’re transferring from another retailer then you’ll likely be a new customer. You need to create a new profile and enter all your details again when signing up (despite having an account previously).

      • Is this true? I can’t find any T&C on it. I was a customer with them in the past.

I signed up for the AGL Westpac offer in Mar-24. Received the $100 gift voucher but haven’t received my first bill yet so the $125 credit has not been applied. I called up Energy Australia and they confirmed the sign up will be backdated to most recent meter read (ie when I signed up for AGL in Mar-24). So I’d forfeit the $125 credit for electricity and gas if I signed up for this Energy Australia offer. Might hold off until I receive the AGL bills in early June.

The guy I spoke to offered me an additional 2% off the retail price to entice me to sign up (in addition to sign up credits). So id suggest ppl here to call up and see if they can get further discounts

    • For electricity they can transfer retrospectively up to 65 days in the past.
For gas they can only transfer at the next meter read.

Does anyone know what's the best plan in NSW for solar panel owners. I was with powershop and they jacked up the price few months ago and looking to move away.

    • If you generate a lot of excess solar look for the highest feed in tariff (FIT)- Engie has 12c. You will pay more on your regular tarriff however the high FIT should more than offset that.

  • The Simply energy I signed up months ago has the sign-up credit roll over. I've not paid any electricity for few months. Anyone can confirm this is the same?

    • +4

I haven't paid electricity for nearly 2 years, family of 4 too

      • wtf lol… r u trying to say solar 🤔

        • +1

I think easternculture is a master-churner. If you can time it, it’s definitely possible.

          • @yoquierotaco: lol that’s crazy

          • +1
            • @easternculture: Masterful. Which ones do you cycle through? Is there a certain order that works, or just the best at the time? Teach us your ways!

              • +2

@j1nx: Just best offer at time of churn. I have to make sure I've used the credit by regularly monitoring my meter and when I'm close to using the promo credit, I churn to whoever is offering the most credit

                • @easternculture: Teach me the way oh master ! How does one need to time it well ?

                • @easternculture: Gotcha. Thanks. I’m new to the churning game, I also have a meter attached to my solar inverter so I can monitor closely like you say. My plan was to switch when I’m 10 business days off using the credit (cooling off period).

    • Yes confirm. I got my first bill in early May 2024.

  • Is there a way to transfer to a new provider without being changed onto a "time of use" tariff?

Everytime I put my address in for quotes they always seem to quote time of use tariff, which I don't want.

EDIT: Just googled and answered my own question, basically the answer is NO, if you change you'll be put onto a time of use tariff now, at least if you are in an energex region. Origin could also change me over at any point by the sounds of it, but they haven't, so I'll let sleeping dogs lie I think.

    • Not really relevant as I’m in an Ausgrid area but every time I switch I get told I’ll be time of use tariffs then it doesn’t happen. I’ve got a solar and a smart meter and I’m not complaining. With energy Australia currently.

  • +2

DO not sign up to Energy Australia - it has a new charge called demand tariff which isn't charged by Origin for example.

It's essentially penalising you more when you use energy during peak 3-9pm period.

    https://www.energyaustralia.com.au/home/electricity-and-gas/…

I tried the $200 sign up credit previously and essentially the credit just covered for my demand tariff charge!! But if you are looking to churn thru energy provider straight after you receive the sign up credit then may be it's worth it…

    • -1

Yep, basically if you change to any new provider, they'll put you on a demand tariff now.

I'm sticking with my origin plan at least untill they decide they are going to change me (which they could do at any point).

      • +2

Not true, I changed to AGL less than a month ago and they didn’t modify my tariff. They have to submit a request to change to the supplier in order to do so - if your tariff has changed then you either agreed to it when signing up or someone messed up on their end.

        • -1

im pretty sure everyone with a smart meter will be now paying demand charge , if you have the old meter then they cant charge you demand charge since they dont know your hourly usage

          • +1

@botchie: I've had a smart meter for two years now, had one put in when we had solar installed. Since then, I have been with: Powershop, Red Energy, Simply Energy, AGL (current). None of them have changed my tariff upon signup. I've been on single rate with controlled load the whole time.

To be honest I think it's dependent on your supplier (i.e. where you live) rather than the retailer themselves. As I said, the retailer has to specifically request a tariff change (you can even call them and ask them to do so, they don't care) - they are not in charge of changing the tariff itself, that is all down to the supplier.

            • @j1nx: maybe so, I wish they were transparent with that because Im with Red enegry and had smart meter put in, now who ever I quote, charges me this demand charge

              • +2

@botchie: Go to your supplier's website and check their residential tariffs. If single rate (or TOU, whichever you want) is still an option give Red a call and ask them to put in a request to change your tariff.

        • +2

I can confirm I'm still on single rate tariff upon signing up to AGL. I have a smart metre

  • -1

Not worth it… their rates are very expensive.
Just compared for ACT, and even with the $200 credit I'd never switch at those prices.

  • +1

I am new to electricity sign up offers, can people churn providers easily or are there any loopholes?

Noticed the rates of the plan are higher than my current if I can switch to another provider with promo, this could be interesting

Over here in WA we get $400 for existing.
