  • Shucking potential?

      To put it where?

      • NAS?

        • Most NAS are 3.5", possibly with 2.5 SSD" slots.

And 5TB is pretty small for a NAS - expensive per TB too.

          • @gadgetguy: Yeah some NAS have 2.5" SSD to improve performance.
            Or maybe he/she likes shucking.

@congo: She shucks Seagates by the NAS bay?

      • Perhaps there's potential in a tiny/mini/micro PC

        • Surely SSD or M.2 would be a better use case.

Going from previous posts, these are the old soldered-on USB-A 5400rpm models

      • +1

Yeah I thought 2.5” ones were not desirable for that reason too

  • Good HDD to just use for general system backup? Not too aware on what makes a HDD good or crap these days.

    I prefer Toshiba Canvio Advance.

is this good for cold storage?

      Freezers do a better job

  • Bought 1 week ago from PCCG for $175.. fail me.

  • Thanks. I was able to use the code as a guest.

  • Looks like if you use a card or paypal there is a $1.785 fee/surcharge.

Hmm, only 2 year warranty but cant find out if this is Australian Warranty and where does it need to be returned should warranty be needed, and who pays for that?

I think the site says somewhere that you return any suspected faulty drives directly to CentreCom, lots of if and or buts though which are unknown.

  • Not sure whether these are SMR or CMR, but transfers can go damn slow once you've got a fair amount of data on them.

    • +1

I've got the same drive and it's definitely SMR. It supports TRIM though so should be alright if you're just not too heavy a user.

  • Are they reliable?

    • I use one for my "transitory TV" i.e, stuff I load onto it, watch and delete, connected to my nvidia Shield. I upgraded from a 4TB Seagate (several years old) to 5TB WD last year and it failed within days…

Not sure you can draw any conclusions but I've gone back to Seagate.

      • Didn't they send you a replacement?

        • +1

I got a refund but that's not really the point.

          • @gadgetguy: Refund is better. I would've done the same if given the choice.
