Is it a scratch and sniff?

  • Pass…

    It is missing Taiwan

      Also missing Palestine

      • +1

nah its there… underneath Israel… you just have to scratch the surface…

      • That's because it was scratched from the map.

        • Not sure where Taiwan is, but, the Republic of China (ROC) is too small an Island to possibly be included in such a small map

@Jessie Ryder: haha yeah glad you noticed… i was scared i'd start a massive backlash due to the political ramifications of what i said.. glad you saw the lighter side of it - which was what was intended :)

I was curious about what they included and what they didn't.

Wikipedia tells me that there are 205 'states'. 193 are formally members of the UN, 2 are non-member observer states (Vatican and Palestine), 2 that have special political status (Cook Islands and Niue, which are in 'free association' with New Zealand, and 8 'de facto' states that the UN doesn't fully recognise as states (which includes Taiwan).

The weird thing about this map is there seems to be 210 flags (I might be counting wrong). So 5 more than above, even after leaving off Taiwan and Palestine (the latter of which the UN recognises as a state, even if it is not a UN member).

Not sure who the other 5 flags are, but my curiosity got the better of me and now I have ordered it to find out….

lol the fact that you bought it just to fact check suggests the map's marketing plan worked

        • I just wanna know what the extra bonus countries are.. I'm invested now (to the tune of $2.55 with OnePass).

          • @werdplaya58: lol true - i bought one just to check it out too… interested to know what kind of secret countries i don't know about lol

I think there are about 197 'real' countries if you count Palestine, Taiwan, Kosovo and other states that are partially recognised. There are heaps of minimally recognised ones though, which are mostly autonomous regions that they claim are an independent state but apart from border control they don't have most of the things you'd expect of a country.

Off the top of my head, Transnistria (Moldova), Abkhazia and South Ossetia (Georgia), Somaliland (Somalia), Northern Cyprus (Cyprus but administered by Turkey) are some of the prominent ones that actually have some sort of claim to independence (though usually through the power exerted by major regional states like Russia and Turkey.

Unrecognised states would include nations that don't have their own state, like Kurdistan, Tibet, Greenland etc. Then there are tiny nation-states that aren't big enough to be their own country, so they're dependencies of a bigger state or "in free association" with the bigger country. New Zealand has Tokelau, Niue and the Cook Islands, and Australia used to have some including PNG, Nauru and others, but now just has overseas territories like Christmas Island (part of WA) and Norfolk Island (now administered by NSW).

Long story short, there are varying degrees of legitimacy and depending on your position you might consider them a country or an illegitimate regime. ISIS calls themselves a state, but nobody seriously recognises them as a country because while they control certain territories through military force, they don't have any sort of coordinated government, diplomacy, currency, taxation, education, welfare and health system to my knowledge.

"real" lol Yeah I guess states are just artificial constructs with often imaginary borders…
Nice summary… I'm guessing those extra flags are some of these quasi-states and territories you mentioned - also potentially some random other flags like UN flag etc. maybe…
I also cracked up at your mention of ISIS lol reminded me to Ricky Gervais monologue at the Golden Globes re: if ISIS starts a network you'd call you agent… lol
It would be super hilarious if they included the ISIS flag on here, the company/publisher would probably get banned and sanctioned by the US, Aust etc lol

It definitely seems to get vaguer after the 195-197 mark as to who 'counts'.

I am curious to see which one of the more disputed ones got selected here, and then to read where this map was manufactured. I certainly didn't have ISIS on my bingo card!

          • @werdplaya58: Well, I gave one to my young cousin, and as she scratched off the places she'd been I noticed a country on the map in southern Africa called "Maximbique"!

pass… I would've preferred it if the map was from 1840's with British empire territories

    • +1

Pass… its not showing the map in accordance to the countries and territories the US has invaded, attacked or undertaken a coup…
