Telstra Plus Optus or Vodafone?

I have a boost sim. I want my partner to use another network (rather than telstra) to avoid both of us going out of reception at the same time. Which 365 day play would you recommend. Previously we used lebara ( which uses vodafone network) and now they are increasing prices from this April. Thank you 🙂

  • Would you recommend optus network or vodafone network to use alongside with a telstra network (boost) sim to maximise the chance of not going out of reception? Thanks.

Depends on your location. One might have better reception. Best to port to Catch for 90 days $20 and try it before committing to 12 months.

Telstra and Optus is best combination.
      Both have excellent coverage
      Vodafone terrible outside metro areas.

But they are all increasing prices or reducing data or both.

What do you mean by both going out of reception?
Regionally or because of network outages?

Going regional and also sometimes inside shopping malls trlstra is horrible

Boost will out perform Vodafone and optus regionally in most places.

And inside malls or built up areas in general I believe boost gives priority to direct Telstra customers so performance drops (not 100% on that, just what ive heard)
I believe that may the case with any wholesale contracts with phone companies. But can’t say for certainty.

From personal experience, i find boost best overall for the cost and reliability.
It definitely performs the best regionally out of the 3 too (in WA)

        • Yeah I have a boost sim and I like it (except in shopping malls where vodofone outperforms boost)

I am thinking of this Catch sim - which is Optus network, as looks like optus coverage is better than Vodofone. I hope it will have a good coverage in shopping malls.

  • Vodafone is the last among the three to raise prices in this financial year.

Depends where you are going. In 2019 in the Kimberley, we had Aldi (on Telstra) and Optus. Telstra was fine in the towns, but Optus had the tourist attractions well covered, and no Telstra.

    • thanks, my main necessity is something working in shopping malls as Boost is terrible there

  • How much is the lebara 365 sim? If your partner is happy with lebara then kogan will be similar.

There is this kogan deal where people are splitting the 2 x large kogan plans in classified, ends up being $135 per person for 300gb of data (or $150 for 500gb). Or if you know someone else looking to change you can also split with them.

    Buy 1, Get 1 Free on Kogan Mobile 365-Day Prepaid Plans - Two for $270 (L Plans 300GB) & $300 (XL Plans 500GB) Delivered @ Kogan

    • leabara 365 is $149

I am thinking of this Catch sim - which is Optus network, as looks like optus coverage is better than Vodofone. I hope it will have a good coverage in shopping malls.

    Wesfarmers or their spinoff Coles
Only time keeping is their downside.

  • Optus seem to have the second biggest network if the aim is regional coverage.

Personally, I've never been somewhere regional where a phone off Telstra had better reception. In general, this has applied within Sydney as well.

My most recent period on Vodafone saw unusable data on trains and connection issues with Android Auto.

Obviously, YMMV, but as already mentioned, it's worth trying before committing.

Telstra is horrible in shopping malls

  • I've used all three and would strongly suggest Optus over Vodafone for coverage around cities and regional. Boost (Telstra) tends to cover more regional areas but Optus outbid them for the rights in some areas whereas Vodafone seem uninterested in covering anywhere with exclusive rights.

    • Thanks

  • Optus have the worst customer service
Spend 4 hours on the phone with them on Friday and they still couldn't' fix my problem so I moved to Telstra
    The are absolutely useless!!!!!
Telstra has now got my business and got it all sorted on 20 minutes.

The problem is once Telstra have you as a customer they are just as bad if not worse.

I ended up having to file a complaint with the TIO because they couldn't sort out an issue after wasting hours on the phone.

      • So far so good but I really doubt they can be as bad Optus

        • I dont care too much about customer care as I will be buying a 1yr prepaid sim and I guess customer care wouldnt matter much in that case. Telstra reception is horrible in shopping malls

  • In Gippsland, Victoria i stick with Telstra though its coverage has heaps of black spots the coverage is still better than the other telcos. Having said that got the Woolworths $25 monthly deal for my son and seems to have similar coverage though of course he doesn't go with me so cant see if it drops out of service then. Optus, kogan, boost etc all drop out about 2klms from where i live Telstra doesn't though there are blackspots.

  • I’d go with Optus just based on the population coverage claims
    Telstra - 99%
    Optus - 98.5%
    Vodafone - 96%

I haven’t personally tried Voda in the last 10 years so I can’t completely discount it. The only sure way to know is to try them for a few months and switch around until you find the combo you like.

Do you know whether optus would be good inside shopping malls as telstra is horrible

      • All depends on the shopping centre, same thing with tall buildings. To get in building coverage all over the shopping centres, repeaters need to be installed. This obviously need permission/requests from the owners of the malls.
