[Pre Order] Nothing Phone 2a 8GB/128GB A$529 Delivered @ Nothing

1731

I'm on Nothing's mailing list and received notice of this recently, was actually shocked by how low the price was - at $529 for the 8gb/128gb model and only $70 more for the 12gb/256gb model. Estimated shipping from 12 March.

Chipset seems to benchmark well for a mid-range chip with a ~740,000 Antutu score.

Given the specs, this seems like an excellent deal at RRP vs something like the Pixel 7a, with a 120hz display, vs 90hz and, according to reviewers, significantly bettter battery life at the cost of a worse camera.

Can I pay Nothing? ( Sorry, but I had to say it 😂 )

    • +10

You have to, at least during the preorder.

    • +3

Well you gotta pay Nothing something in order to own this Nothing phone.

    • +2

      Nothing to be paid.

      • +1

As they should, but I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me

He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

        • +1

Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?

    • +27

That is how it works. You pay Nothing and get Nothing.

      • Can I pay nothing and get Nothing? 🥹😅

    • +3

You can with a $529 delivery fee 😉

    • +11

You'll own Nothing and be happy

      • +1

what's sad is that this social conditioning will end up working

      • I will definitely own Nothing 😂

    • +3

You can pay nothing; and you will definitely get nothing.

    • +2

      pay Nothing get Nothing

      • That would be awesome 😂

    • Then Nothing phone you got

    • Strange to see lots of up-vote for an UN-proven brand & similar-pricing to other mid-range phones 🤔

    • What are the benefit of a UN-approved AU phone / grey-import ?

How can buyer be guarantee of AU-network-compatibility over say 5 years ?

  • +12

Not a bad deal. Nothing really tries hard to scoop up the entry mid-range market from Xiaomi and Samsung eh? I'm all here for it if I didn't go with the P8P already.

    • +19

I regret even getting the P8P for half price on the HN deal, the battery life is an absolute joke. It heats up massively any time it's exposed to the outside elements.

Garbage phone that wasn't even worth $850

      • +5

I felt the same way. Traded in at jb hifi for 800 dollars after a few months, used the 400 dollar trade in bonus, price match and 15% GC to get a S24 Ultra for a decent price. Definitely worth it and glad I moved away from the P8P.

        • That's awesome - is that deal possible at all? I'm interested in getting one too.

          • +1

@dsiritz: Sadly not. You could probably price match JB with a cheaper online prices but I think the bonus trade in offer literally ended at midnight last night. The deals do occasionally come around though. Another option is to see how much your local few cash converters will offer. I've had previous good fortune getting a decent offer from them, depending how badly the store needs recent model phones.

      • As a Gerry lover you should bang your head against a wall.

    • Not just that with these features and appearance even apple fan boy like my self want to grab one.

  • +1

wow, though this would go for more down under. not too shabby. not sure abt the camera arrangement though.. definitely the ugly duckling compared to the phone 1 and 2 i think

  • +11

Review here from MKBHD, got a pretty strong recommendation.

    • +3

      Same from MrWTB

      Surprised Linus didn't review it

      • +4

We'll probably see it in a few weeks on Short Circuit lol. That's where most of the phone reviews go nowadays unless its one of those innovative phones or its a big deal for some reason.

      • +7

Linus would be good for drop-test durability, at the very least.

    • +35

tbf he recommends - to varying extents - just about everything he 'reviews'.

      • +9

He does seem to avoid criticism that might be too harsh, whereas when he wants to compliment something he does not hold back nearly as much.

      • +34

        This is 'access' tech-reviewing.

I compare it to access journalism.

I watch MKBHD (and a slightly less offender in Mr. WTB) because they cover most things [they have access], it's well-shot/produced with care etc.

But they lose some credibility in that their access to releases is paramount over the unfettered honesty. Their gamut is effusive praise, praise, 'balance', especially if you are a large, well-liked or otherwise established brand.
        '
Companies and big reviewers are symbiotic, and neither want to piss each other off. But Apple can harm reviewers far more than vice versa - see journalism covering UFC as an example of access journalism.

        • +2

          100% agree.

MKBHD also comes across as a massive Apple Fanboy, is mates with Cook, I find it very very hard to believe that does not play a part in his 'reviews'.

        • +1

Both jokers are sweetalking because big tech pays them. Waste of time!
Wait for Techrax throwing one down a chimney!

        • +1

MrMobile is the only one worth a damn when it comes to phone reviews.

          • @Plasma: I've watched a few of his based on your recommendation today - not bad to add to the rotation.

He definitely seems to offer a more honest take, whichever way it goes.

          • +2

@Plasma: We need someone to review the reviewers

        • I wouldn't say Marquez is an Apple "fanboy" as such, rather he just plays by Apple's bullshit rules and doesn't really negatively criticise their products (at most just a few softball comment here and there). In his defense it's the only way Apple will give you their products early to review, bringing in huge views. I find it infuriating though, so I don't watch his stuff - I don't really see the point!

          • +2

@johnno07: He is definitely better than he was now he's got an audience of his size to use against Apple. He was ATROCIOUS a few years ago in the way he sucked up to them (and it's clearly worked, so I guess he'd say it's justified.)

  • +2

This is a pretty good alternative if you don't want to wait.

    • +2

      Cheaper on AliExpress.

    • Yep a solid option if you don't care about the camera. Don't get me wrong it takes pretty decent photos but I wouldn't rate it as good.

      • +1

Took it on an overseas holiday recently and the day photos are fine but the night mode definitely needs improvement.

    • The F5 is a refreshing choice I must say

  • Being a very niche brand, good luck trying for any sort of resale on it. Apart from that looks decent for a mid ranger.

    • +1

I've seen a few of the Nothing Phone (1)s for sale and they seem to have some sort of interest second hand

    • +51

At 529, even if you thew the phone in the bin you'd lose less than most high end android phones. Don't think resale value is a huge point of consideration for phones, especially at this price point.

      • +1

Exactly right. I couldn't care less if I sell my phone when I get a new one or not.

      • +8

Plus it's 2024, resale is not an issue for mid-range; $500 phones perform almost identical to flagships and won't get laggy or anything for 5 to 10 years, what on earth would you ever upgrade for?

You won't need a new phone until you break the screen.

      • +1

S23U is about $1450 after all the discounts, then sell for $1000 when next release is out

      • +1

Although I paid around $370 for a redmi note 10 pro and sold it for $250 after using it for two years.

        • damn cheaper than sim plan

    • +21

Resale should be at the bottom of your list if you are looking at a mid range phone tbh, by the time you want to resell it the chip is likely too bogged down or the OS is outdated.

    • +1

Yeah, no shortage of people buying mid-range unknown phones to flip them

    • +7

who tf buys a phone with resale being one of their top concerns (or even a concern at all…)!?

      • +3

Always. One reason I buy iPhones. I can sell and buy at not an enormous loss to upgrade.

        • +2

          each to their own!

i also own an iphone and it's totally not a consideration for me. i use my phones until they are utterly useless (other than as a paperweight) and then keep them as a backup.

          • +1

@jrowls: Exactly each to their own. I feel like doing it that way, you get the hit with all depreciation each time you buy. If for example you upgrade every 2-3 years an iPhone will often still be worth $500+ and for example you can buy an iPhone 15 brand new for $1200 on OZB.

So that’s about $200 pa every 3 years to have a newer phone, less risk of a device failing vs $1200+ outlay depending on how long you keep assuming battery/device doesn’t fail. Or rather I sell my old iPhone and buy a 2nd newer model iPhone and often only have a small outlay of $200 or so as I never need to latest model.

    • So you're saying we should buy used Nothing phones for the best value? Got it.

  • I signed up for the newsletter before the launch and got a $30 off code, and it doesn’t work :/ (specifically said it was for Phone 2a!

    • That's annoying!

Also, have a million emails from nothing but no pre-order discount, how did you get that?

      • +1

I was just browsing their site 1-2 days before the launch and there was a signup box, added in my email and next thing you know a pop up came with my $30 off coupon specifically for the 2A. Was gassed to use it but it doesn’t work, maybe I’ll email them or hit em up on X.

      • +4

Ooops nvm it’s works now, guess I’ll be getting the 2A anyways!

        • Just emailed to see if they'll provide one. Genuinely thinking of making the jump to Nothing.

          Good luck with shipping.

        • +2

I assume it's a generic code. Care to share?

  • +11

Google 6a with Google tensor CPU has antutu score 950387 and flagship grade cameras. Google 7a has even better cameras.

    • +3

And p7a is almost the same price, and is at least a known brand with known support roadmap.

    • +5

Benchmarks are useless, my 6a overheats in like 10mins and drops to a 3rd of it's performance in games… In benchmarks it scores higher but my last phone (Poco x3 Pro) with a Snapdragon 860 performed much better after the first 5mins.

      • -3

Then you probably have the faulty one since My Pixel 7 doesn't overheat and no, Snapdragon 8 gen 1 performs better than 3 years old chips.

        • Pixel 7 isn't what I or for that matter what you were originally talking about?

          • @AreYouAWiiizard: Because I don't have 6a myself, so I can only tell you my pixel 7 doesn't have this issue, okay? My Pixel 1 doesn't overheat either. That's why I said you probably have the faulty one.

            • @Raguel: I mean the top review in Google complains about the overheating… The phone also gets toasty under heavy load — another Tensor side effect. Google’s processors just seem to overheat a bit too fast compared to other phones.

I think they made some major improvements to power use in Tensor G2 though that's in the Pixel 7.

              • @AreYouAWiiizard: Yes, it's funny how Pixel 7 has a better battery life than Pixel 8 even tho Pixel 8 has a bigger battery, lol.

                • @Raguel: That's not entirely true, it has a more powerful processor that ends up using more power when pushing it to the limit but from what I've seen when performing at similar performance (or doing a workload that's entirely similar) it's a decent bit more efficient.

  • +1

Just go to Chinese website jindong or taobao, buy Redmi, vivo, oppo, these popular brands. Their newest flagships killers only cost around five to six hundred AUD include postage, sending straight to your door in couple weeks. The specs are much better and they have google store hidden in setting, just enable it.

    • The shipping fee will kill the deal? I've checked through Taobao before and their international Taobao site has less options and usually costs more.

    • any specific phone to recommend please?

      • +1

Poco F5 more specifically….mine in mint condition so I can buy this instead

      • vivo neo 9. I got one. On Aliexpress It's about $600. SD8 Gen2. Good battery, 120hz amoled screen, has all the bands. Just need to delete some useless app and turn on English. Google services works.

    • +8

Not worth doing this anymore - see my post here

    • +3

      What about warranty though?

      • +4

        What warranty?

        • +4

          Exactly

    • +2

Are you sure the google store is just hidden in setting?

      • +4

They don't have it. It seems Jms T made an account just to comment that.

      • +3

It is not. GMS does not come preinstalled on Chinese ROMs which breaks a whole heap of stuff. See my post above

    • +1

Pretty sure Xiaomi have stopped this by now tying unlocking the bootloader to a Mainland China ID, which is a shame because I did like the option of unlocking it myself and then flashing Xiaomi.EU ROM. Sadly though that's gone now on newer devices. There's still workarounds for older Xiaomi 13 devices and lower. But it's been destroyed now for the newest stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if Xiaomi EU shuts down in the next year or two because of it.

      • +1

whys everyone hating on chinese phones and want to flash custom roms? I bought Vivo Neo 9, $600 on Aliexpress. Everything works, banking, google etc. Just change system language and delete some stock apps I'll never use.
The value is insane for a SD8 Gen 2 phone.

    • @Jms T: Bias & paid-reviews also live @ OzBargain too.

  • +2

I have the Nothing Phone 1 and absolutely love it. No idea why some say the photos aren't the best cos unless you're a professional photographer, they are fantastic. Phone is very fast and really no complaints whatsoever.

  • -1

Don't buy any products from this brand, I have tbeir smart watch but their service is speechless. No plan to fix many bugs and problems.

  • +2

Sad that phones are slowly trending towards phablet sized devices again. :/

    • +5

Because it's what the majority of people buy. If no one was buying them, they wouldn't be making them.

    • +3

I personally like more options on the market, but most people want a larger display these days. It was actually annoying that Apple for like 3 years only made the Pro Max as a large option. Now with the Plus it's much more affordable if you want an Apple device to get the larger display, but as you can see by the fact they basically discontinued the iPhone Mini line of phones, smaller devices don't sell well anymore. ASUS is also going big with the Zenphone this year and that's been typically a smaller phone.

I mean you can just fit larger cameras, larger batteries, the design can cost less because you don't have to squeeze components as much etc. Being bigger has it's advantages from a cost, manufacturing and performance perspective.

      • +2

If you try buy a new mini now it is impossible. I wouldn’t say demand is gone.

        • +2

All you do is throttle the supply to make the demand look overwhelming, simplest thing in the world.
