Just get rid of that ugly useless eyesore and slap solar panel, install reverse cycle and you will never have to worry about energy bill or aesthetic of your roof.

I spend so much time looking at my roof. Right up there with my elbow and the bottom of my shoes.

@OP I do it the other way around and put sealing covers over the inside vents. Means heat doesn't rise out into the ceiling cavity. I don't think there's too many concerns about weather damaging the unit itself (especially considering in Australia the wildest weather seems to be in summer).

  • Nah, stick half a Santa upside down to it and make a statement!

I don't live in cooler areas, or have an evaporative cooler on my roof, how do I vote?

  • Better off getting the free vent covers.

    • Is there a scheme that hands them out? Can you explain this more please?

There is in Victoria. Give them a burner phone number cause they never stop ringing trying to sell you other crap afterwards.

  • We had evaporative at our last house. Cover fitted most winters. Ceiling grills all shut too. Pretty sure the unit also had a self closing anti draft flap anyway
    .

  • We never cover ours. Northern Vic here. I think I have only seen 1 house cover theirs in the area I am in.
We do close all the vents inside though.
All windows and sliding glass doors are double glazed and weather strips on front door. We get some wicked frosts up here, but we have not needed heating in the 5 years since we built.
Still keen to find affordable vent covers though.
