Coles substitution - Does this sound correct?

So I ordered some Creative Gourmet Frozen Blueberries ( they were half price at the time )

1.2kg for $11.28 - Creative Gourmet
But they were out of stock, so they subtitued for
500g for $6.20 - Coles Blueberries

I'm not exactly sure how there substitutions work, but I ended up paying more per gram and got less than half the weight I ordered..

I sent them an email and the responses was
"Thank you for contacting Coles Online. Upon checking, I can confirm that you were only charged $6.20 for the supplied 500g of Blueberries."

Is that right?

some of the coles substitutions just too random and unpredictable

They most likely don't take consideration sale price and weight but only like for like products.

If you ordered 4 packets @ 300g each packet totalling 1.2kg but Coles substituted for 1 X 500g packet then substitution didn't work.

They should have given you 2 (1000g) or 3 (1500g) packets if the picker had any common sense but I'm sure pickers has their policies to follow whether it makes sense or not.

That's why I untick substitutions when I ordered online.

The only substitution I ever tick is when the products have the same weight.

I wanted Coles heavy cream 600g but they didn't have any so they replaced it with bulla which is also 600g.

I like to do my own shopping for this exact reason.

    • sometimes i swear they must intentionally stitch people up like this so they will get frustrated and revert back to shopping in person (and more chance of random impulse buys).

  • I haven't had to deal with substitutions for a while. I now disable or leave notes if it's something I really need.

The “personal shopper” is a worker on minimum wage just picking & packing your order. They are not going to stop and get their calculator out and work out what’s best for you. They go by what their handheld device tells them to pick and pack for you

    • I often see them in the store and they tend to be young people who may never cook and just order takeout or their parents cook for them. I don't think they understand what would be the best substitute for a particular item.

Clicking substitutions with Coles is always a gamble. They’re my supplier for work at the moment and we get things like green beans instead of spinach. Yeh, they’re both green but not the same thing at all…

One thing I like about woolworths is they always match weight. There's been a few times where I ordered 1kg and have gotten 2x500g instead as a substitute.

Overall I stopped ordering online with Coles because it was a garbage system. Woolworths they make mistakes but it's always quickly rectified without having to explain cost per gram or anything. Coles is only good for booze, because they leave the discount in place and refund the original cost, so I've gotten some super cheap booze from them before.
