Cast Iron Griddle for Two Portable Induction Hobs

I'm looking for an induction solution for outdoor BBQing. Has anyone got a good setup using two IKEA portable induction hobs or similar powering a cast iron griddle? E.g. something like this Stanley Rogers Giant Grill Plate 2.0x30.0x5.0 centimeters Black https://amzn.asia/d/bAqq9AY

Never tried it, but I have used cast iron on an induction stove and it's meh. Cast iron isn't a great thermal conductor.

Those Ikea hobs have a 17.5cm diameter heating element so you will get two hot spots. That Stanley Rogers grill plate is cast aluminium (with an internal steel component for induction heating) so it should conduct heat across the plate more evenly.

    • It's interesting that you're not impressed with cast iron on an induction cooktop. We've had an induction cooktop for years and some of our older pans we still enjoy using aren't suitable. We found an old 6" cast iron fry pan without a handle that we turn over and use as a base for the old pans and it works quite well.

      • Maybe it works better on a large induction element, but the smaller IKEA ones wouldn't be great?

    • Thanks that's a helpful comment. I had separately ordered a cast iron one so I'll cancel and maybe take a look at this one.

I've used a cast iron plate on an indoors Fischer & Paykel induction and can rate it. However a lot of the success is probably attributable to the F&P being flat and level, and being able to link the burners into a combined mode. I don't think that is a given in your scenario, and the cost, faff and cable logistics would be a pain.

How essential is it that it's induction? I'd probably instead be looking for something like an electric hotplate, or this Breville sandwich press which can open up to a bbq mode instead.

    • I've never had one that is big and gets very hot all over- not enough for BBQing anyway.
