Health Insurance for Visitor (Visa Subclass 600): Cover during Flights

I am having visitors on 600 visa, one with the "8501 - Maintain health insurance" condition. There seem to be 2 choices:
- go with some Australian insurance (HCF, etc) but this won't cover the flights;
- go with some overseas insurance (which will cover flights too) but it may be considered inadequate by …dunno… Australian border control?

How do people solve this dilemma? Buy 2 policies? Thanks,

  • Flight? Are you referring to travel insurance?

    • I guess yes but those covers may not be adequate. Like, 1.000.000$ annual limit. says immi.gov.au - travel insurances do not do this typically.

      Or buy travel insurance for the days in the sky? There must be a better solution but may be not.

    you should get either bupa or allianz to meet 8501 condition.

    Flights is a separate issue and you need travel insurance

    • Bupa does not cover people older than 70 and Allianz wants the policy to start in 14 days, the flight is earlier. I am so screwed :-(

  • Type "8501 health insurance" into Google and you can see a number of companies that offer policies to meet the requirements.

    I went through this process a while back. Due to age of the travellers, I absolutely needed cover during the flights as well. Ended up going with overseas travel insurance.

    Keep in mind, the cover will need to be for the entire duration of the trip. The T&C's will have wording to that effect. So you can't just get cover for the incoming flight and another cover for outgoing flight.

    • So what overseas travel insurance did you end up buying?

    There are people like these guys. I don’t know if they will provide your cover but they do travel insurance as well. Give them a ring to discuss.

    • they only sell to medicare card holders :(
