Noticed that I am experiencing a lot of cramps due to Zelda: ToTK so I researched for alternatives. Turns out the Split Pad Pro is the most recommended Joycon alternative in handheld mode, if you do not care about Gyro/Rumble and Amiibo. This is after considerations for Binkbok/Doyoky/Nyxi

  • Great prices. I have the Pro and Compact and personally much prefer the Compact as it's less chunky. If you have massive hands the Pro might be better.

    • Second that. Compact is a bit better imo, it sits flush with the screen unlike the pro that protrudes quite a bit. But as comfortable as pro

Just a warning I went thru 2 of these with the gold rubbing off the buttons. I now have the Charizard split pad that has no issues

The black one is(was) 59 from Amazon JP last night. Not sure if you can still get it.

    • do you have the link?

      • Amazon au already blocked all Amazon JP I think. Can not buy anything from Amazon JP now

  • +2

I've got one of these as well as the nyxi Athena joycons and mobapad m6. I prefer the mobapad for handheld gaming because of the clickiness of the mechanical switches and and it has rumble . The nyxi is better for situations where I want to put the switch on its stand and convert the Athena joycons into a pro controller since they have wireless and rumble.

I find that the hori, whilst it has better build quality than the other two, is a bit overpriced since the nyxi is cheaper and has rumble and wireless.

    • Thanks for sharing, I've read about (I think the Mobapad M6) but could only find it in Catch and a tad bit over $100

      • +1

It's cheaper if you get it on AliExpress. Catch and eBay mark up the prices.

  • A ‘Switch grip case’ may solve your issue of hand cramping instead of changing your joy cons. At least I know it did for me.

    • I tried, both a plastic (from IINE) and silicon grip case but I think it's the overall size of the joy cons that's causing it. They are the cheaper options though

  • +1

Just fyi, Hori Split/Pad are not wireless and has no rumble so may impact your experience with games that need rumble (such as Mario Odyssey).

There are cheaper alternatives like the Binbok/Nyxi variants you can find on AliExpress as well.

    • When do you need rumble? Legit question - it's been ages and I can't remember needing it.

      • Mario Odyssey you need rumble to find the treasure in a room…

        • Oh just the once? I must've just worked around it.

          • @Orion au: Nah i think in all the treasure rooms..

  • Gripcase oled works really well for $40

Isn't gyro kind of necessary for aiming in Zelda though? Also seems kind of pricey still, if you're not getting gyro, rumble or amiibo support. What are you paying for? Have you tried using a pro controller with a clip mount for the Switch? I've always found that more comfortable and it also brings the Switch closer to my eyeline which is nice. Not very compact/traveller friendly though.

    • True, not bargain at all. $99.95 with official joycon is a better deal on amazon now.

      • That's very subjective. I wouldn't touch official joycon at that price.

      • +2

I find the joycons super uncomfortable for long play sessions with the bottom digging into your palms.

Here are my thoughts and the reason I have no issues with the hori split.

Vibration is loud especially in a quite environment
Gyro is over rated, don't miss it at all and it's always optional not required
Ergonomics always is no1 for a controller

    • +2

      necessary? No.

      • I mean I guess you can just use the sticks by themselves to aim, but that's so clunky. The gyro makes aiming significantly easier and more enjoyable IMO. I don't reckon I'd bother playing the game without it but to each their own

    • +1

You're getting a more comfortable handheld mode that has a proper D-pad and larger analog sticks. The Hori pads are awesome. I haven't used joycon since I got my Hori pads.

    • +1

I find the gyro messes up with my aim sometimes, gotten so used to aiming with sticks from other consoles.

One of my main requirements is I still should be able to charge the switch in dock mode without removing anything.

    • The split pad pro are far more accurate than the joycons. You need the gyro for aiming with the joycons in zelda because without that the joycons are atrocious. I use both the joycons and the split pad pro and the difference is stark. I mainly use the joycons for amibo support.

  • HORI Nintendo Switch Split Pad Compact (Light Gray & Yellow) via Amazon US $64.72 :

You put the real bargain in the description.

    • Different shape though

    • as ce5himm mentioned, that's the compact and yes it is a bargain for those looking at the Compact

I was more interested in the Pro though, which according to 3Camel is just a few cents away from last time it went on lowest 2022 Sale ($81.69)

have you tried my link above? $54.91 for the black from amazon JP

        • Yes, showing unavailable for me :'(

          • +3

@bimboy56: try open in a browser and refreshing couple of times. still available to me ATM

            • @ce5himm: Damn, that worked. I'll add it into the description section as well. Thanks mate!

        • Bargain

        • many thanks for that, great deal on the full size hori pro.
do you happen to have a working link for the hori apricot red compact on Amazon Japan that ships to Aus? I cant seem to get it to show up (and would prefer that over the pokemon compact designs)

      • Tempted to buy this even though I have the Compact in red already..

  • Good stuff. Been using my split pad pro and it's absolutely great for comfort if you mainly play handheld.

Only problem I have is that it doesn't contain NFC reader for amiibo and I had to swap joycon just to amiibo and swap it back. Other than that, definitely recommend it for fellow handheld players.

  • I have the black ones. Good if you use the switch in handheld mode. My eyes can't see the screen properly so harly used them.
I ended up buying the CuleedTec L/R Wireless Switch Controllers from amazon (currenly $59.99 + 10% off). Doesn't have NFC or IR, but I don't use those. The analogue sticks on them are nice and tight and they're good for long play session when used wirelessly. Batterys last a few hours.

  • What is the Hori Grip controller, is it a split pad pro or something else?
