Any Amazon Employees or Reps on OzBargain

Amazon closed my account on the basis that they were unable to verify my debit card payment method.

I explained to them that debit cards do not generate statements. I sent them a bank statement with my details also showing the last 4 digits of the debit card from a recent purchase via the card.
This is how its reflected on bank statement

They then emailed me and said based on the information provided , they closed my account . Lol WTF.

I also had $245 gift card balance

Would appreciate if any amazon employee is on ozbargain that can help with this matter.

    what do you even mean?

Credit cards have credit card statments.
Debt cards do not. The expense just shows on your bank statement.

They wanted a credit card statement for a debt card

Don't worry OP, your thread makes complete sense. Not sure where there is to get lost….

Definitely keep trying. What a stupid situation to be in.

showing the last 4 digits of the debit card from a recent purchase via the card

Your recent purchase is over a year ago?

    • +1

      Dont use it much.

Usually buy discounted amazon gift cards to buy items

But thats not the issue. The issue is debit cards dont have statements and it seems they closed my account on the basis that i could not provide a statement for my bank issued debit card because they dont exist lol

    What triggered this ?

    • 2 x Samsung S23 orders

      • +4

Did you recently open the account or have no previous orders? Might have triggered their fraud department ordering two flagship phones at once.

        • Had the account since 2018

          Many many orders

            • @HardQuiz: Correct

              • @easternculture: Strange.

Did you login from a different device recently? or were there any recent changes to your payment details?

                • @HardQuiz: Nope
                  Same device
                  Same payment details

                  • @easternculture: Yeah very strange.

Please keep us updated on how you go.

Amazon have a history of closing accounts for weird reasons

I remember the days of having amazon affiliate account. I have over $2000 USD and one day they emailed me saying they closed my account for violating their policy , cant remember exactly but mentioned they adult services, go figure . 🤣

But anyways , seems like i may have to go fair trading way and then small court tribunal for $250 bucks. Im sure it will cost them thousands 🤣🤣 but again can ask for compensation to be paid in my claim

                      • @easternculture: I pray every night that Amazon doesn't audit my affiliate sites again. You were making $2000 USD a month from your US affiliate site? That's pretty good champ.

    • Anti Money Laundering is my guess.

I live in Austria and made a purchase on Amazon.de with a debit card. Five minutes after that I received a mail that my account is on hold due to suspicious activity detected on it. Documents that I submitted were not enough initially. I used the guidance from the top post here and after re-sending my data two times, I was contacted back by '[email protected]'. Additionally to everything (passport selfie, debit card selfie and online banking screenshots) they required a Utility bill as well. After sending my utility bill (name, address and phone visible on it), my account was unlocked. Thanks to the author

      And today i get this

      Hello,
After a review of your details, we have determined it necessary to close your Amazon.com.au account. Any pending orders have been canceled.
We may not reply to further emails about this issue.

      • Isn't $2k in giftcard as well? You lost over $2k.

        • That was supposed to all go on my card.
But since they closed the account, the order has been cancelled

          • +1

@easternculture: Maybe you have a long history of using giftcard to pay, but not here for this $2k order. It looks like a stolen card to them.

            • +1

@Neoika: I gave them proof. They didnt accept it.

Im just pissed that they never returned the $245 gift card which essentially is robbery and thats not ok.

              • +4

@easternculture: Sorry to be impolite, based on you activities and comments in the Vanilla VISA deal, I can't believe you would have used cash on a debit card to pay, rather than eGC converted from Vanilla VISA. You are way above an averager.

                • @Neoika: The vanilla cards are to be used on bills, council rates, PHI, car insurance etc which exceed the amount of cards i managed to get

Personal expenses are excluded in vanilla GC purchaces

              • @easternculture: Lodge a complaint with AFCA about the $245 gift card balance. It’s free and fairly efficient.

                https://www.afca.org.au/make-a-complaint

                • +5

@toasty: They dont fall under afca.
The complaint needs to be with fair trading.

I wish they fell under ombudsman authority as the complaint process will cost them thousands of dollars according to an inside source i know

                  • @easternculture: You’re right.

I was just editing my earlier comment to say unfortunately doesn’t look like AFCA would accept the complaint.

                    Pity.

                    • +3

@toasty: With ombudsman you have the upper hand.

Companies that fall under ombudsman will resolve the matter immediatly to avoid the expensive process they have to follow which is also time consuming for the company.

                  • @easternculture: How high in the thousands

  • +9

Don't think we are getting the whole story ;)

The problem is, unless it is something minor like a return or refund, Amazon is a dead end when it comes to someone "of significance" in an escalation department.

        • this is the red flag.

          • @Wiadro: But you cannot justify closing an account within 24hrs of a red flag.

I didnt even get a phone call to explain.

            • @easternculture: Do you have other Amazon accounts with delivery addresses that were also used on the orders placed via the account that was closed?

            • @easternculture: Some companies close account straight away without even any red flag, At least you had a chance in that 24 hrs to use those gift card to buy an item. (i.e. IDK if they would have had processed that order or not though)

              • @USER DC: This is why fair trading exists.

Ive lodged a complaint and will take them to small court tribunal if i have to 🤣🤣

I've done it before like use XX prepaid cards or take out your max quanity on XX acs .
They probably have called you out for being a Naughty Boy .

  • I had to contact Amazon support recently because I couldn't make a purchase using their parcel collect service. I'm a prime member and assumed I'd be treated with some level of importance but no, the support was less than useless, in fact it was the worst support experience I've received over the past 5 or so years. Nonchalant, uncaring, sarcastic, insincere and incompetent. I sent an email to their support centre complaining about the support which has, to this date, still been unanswered.

  • That sucks. Did you only add this card as a first time payment method for this order?

I'm sure Amazon sees it's fair share of accounts getting hacked and stolen credit cards added for large purchases so I guess I can understand why it might trigger but their handling of it is terrible, especially finishing their closure email with "We may not reply to further emails about this issue." so basically closed and too bad, don't bother contacting us again.

Hope you get a good result.

    • Card has been on the account for at least 3 months

  • +2

I think part of the reason they closed it is because your proof (bank statement) is a year old and shows you had a balance of $10.
How would you pay $2000 for phones if your balance was $10? Your proof basically tells them you are a scammer or have stolen the card and old statement details or the payment will somehow get reversed by the bank as a chargeback etc.
Can you not provide them with a more up to date statement (even if it means going to woolworths and spending $1 now so you can show them the last four digits of your card and a screenshot of that transaction and your balance today where you can afford the phones).

    • I sent them one with a spend in january but they still didnt accept it

      • but they still didnt accept it

Did they provide a reason for the rejection?

        • Thank you for your response. We have reviewed the information you provided but we were unable to verify ownership of your master card payment ending in XXXX because the document provided did not prove card ownership. Please send us a document that includes name, address, last four digits, and transaction details of the card used. Your account is still temporarily on hold.

          • @easternculture:

verify ownership of your master card payment ending in XXXX because the document provided did not prove card ownership

How are you supposed to prove card ownership via the bank statement?
I don't know of any bank that actually prints out the card number. Only the account number is shown.

Please send us a document that includes name, address, last four digits, and transaction details of the card used.

            LOL!

            • @DoctorCalculon: See the link i attached in OP

Shows last 4 digits of card in bank account statement

              • @easternculture:

Shows last 4 digits of card in bank account statement

Yes, I saw that. That should have been reasonable enough proof.

It sounds like they are being very pedantic. They want to see the redacted card number on the first page under your name and address.

                • +1

@DoctorCalculon: Lets see what fair trading say.

Can also ask for compensation for any price difference for the 2 x s23 phones phones i had on the account.

Hopefully they will get fined for not having a proper complaint resolution process that complies with ACCC standards

              • @easternculture: Send it again but highlight the details they are asking for?
Chances are if you make it easy for them and get a different person look at it they will accept it!

Got 2 orders of a plus and ultra on my account via prepaid card

Now i have 5 days to decide which one i want and change payment method

Why would you need to change payment method if the debit card was ok?

    • Prepaid card is not a debit card

    • Thanks for sharing your painful experience.

Was Amazon AU actually fined for their conduct?

      • Dont know. Will have to ask the fair trading staff who handled the complain

    • glad it was resolved finally. Did Amazon offer any compensation for the trouble?

    • So they re-instated it without even asking you to provide more ID!
If so shows they didn't need it in the first place!
      Thanks for the update.

How can i join the pre- ozbargain posting club

I'll try my luck with the form, and may move on to just contact fair trading if that worked for you Easternculture.

    • Lol. Not sure why they ban accounts with expensive purchases

      • so annoying, had like 70$ gc balance so a bit annoyed (not as bad as other people).. i'll keep ya posted.

      • @easternculture you still remember how long it took fair trading to deal with this issue?

About 2 weeks. It's 1 week till they get to process complaint, then a few days for Amazon to respond to it
