  • Good to use as main drive in windows laptop?

    • No, dramless and QLC.
Can suffer slowdowns with large writes and not good quality meaning not as fast or reliable

    • -1

As a main drive with operating system on it, no. You need a drive with a dram cache or otherwise the OS will suffer big time….. as stated above by firerunner

      • +5

This is wrong. DRAMless nvme drives have HMB which gives them much better sustained writes, it isn't the same situation as sata drives back in the day.

So for storing games this would be good, if you were transferring large files constantly then you would go for a higher end dram drive.

It could be used as a main drive, but probably not the best option, I also wouldn't put valuable files on it since it has low endurance.

So… This is perfect for a folder full of material for academic purposes?

Small and easily stowed away safely if put in a portable case!

@CMH: Yes, it will be perfect for a folder full of "material" for your friends "academic purposes".

If you're afraid of your wife finding your material used for educational purposes, consider investing in one of these: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/hard-drives-&-ssds/enclo…

Good size storage, very nice price but would rather AU stock personally. Speeds are on the lower side of what's on offer by other brands but the price reflects that. Seems a good deal for semi-mass storage.
Fyi: you're not gonna notice the speed difference in real-world applications. Only time you would notice is if you're doing content creations and stuff like that.

  • Placed an order for the 2tb p5 plus a week ago at $208 which still hasn't shipped… tempted to cancel and order this.

Would i see any of the impacts mentioned above using this in a dell optiplex 7060 micro (pcie3) as a single drive running ubuntu, nextcloud and emby server or am i right in thinking the p3 would still be overkill for that use case ?

    • I did the same thing and cracked it. It didn't ship for ages then slightly dropped price. So cancel order again, still took ages, cancelled again

      Far far too slow.

It'll be cheaper eventually and hopefully ship in a reasonable time

    • you'll regret cancelling the p5 plus for this

e: for your purposes, p3 is probably overkill still yes.

Every drive that gets posted is always the worst drive ever because of some nerd stat. How is it possible they are so bad? What's actually going on.

    • This one has an absolutely crappy write endurance, or "lifespan" (especially give its so large at 4tb), and because it's got no cache, sustained usage will bring it to its knees .
Compared to WD black (for example), it's very weak

      • Thank you for clarifying! Starting to get a better picture of things.

        • +2

Almost every drive posted with "issues" is absolutely fine for normal use - including this one.
For some weird reason a whole bunch of people are all over the "issues" that are never going to affect you if you're just using the drive for normal desktop stuff.

Modern drives are almost all fine, just buy the cheapest for the capacity you need.

This one has an absolutely crappy write endurance, or "lifespan"

        WTF ?

It's rated to 800TB - that's 100GB per day, every single day, for the next 21 years.

How is this in any way crappy ?

    • +1

Many drives are bad or at least have some small issues nowadays and great drives are extremely expensive and rarely discounted.

So we see all the trash

      • Thank you for clarifying! Starting to get a better picture of things.

That write endurance is absolutely atrocious. Now I know there isn't any direct correlation between TBW figures and actual drive longevity but if nothing else it shows you how little confidence Crucial has in their own product. And if even they're not confident, neither should you be.

Don't be surprised if your drive dies early.

    • +3

for a 4TB drive its an egregiously low TBW.
I have my first NVME drive receive an "Exhausted" smart warning last week… and guess what, it was a 1TB Crucial P1.
All I used it for was Debian + Home Assistant, and it was only 18 months old.

      • What are the TBW figures on your drive?

        • 200 TBW, apparently

      • Ouch!

    • +1

Can we stop peddling this stuff ?

The write endurance is absolutely fine - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13522423/redir

  • Price drop, drive added to 5% off deal

  • Note, not the p3 plus which is full power goodness
