  • Where to get the cover?

  • +8

I seriously wasn't expecting to see a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 CPU in this. It's quite a good budget CPU.

If the RAM was upped to 4GB and storage 64GB this would be a really good 8" in today's market.

Still tempting as a Home Assistant dashboard.

    • +2

I did some digging. US brand that released the same tablet there for Verizon except it uses a weaker Snapdragon 480 with 2GB RAM. A pro is that it has 5G.

Seems they have a 10" rugged tablet and phones coming soon. We'll see those in an Auspost catalogue sooner or later.

      • Hope the 10" will come with 4GB RAM

        • +1

          It does.

      • +1

The Snapdragon 680 is actually a weaker chip than the SD 480 5G, but still more than sufficient for this price point.

        • +1

I'd say they're pretty comparable in gaming benchmarks. 480 certainly on single core than multicore in the 680.

Either way it's not bad. Better than some shitty weak MediaTek you often find.

    • Very surprised as well.
This probably matches well with the Samsung a8 unisoc tablet

  • Is it network locked to Telstra

    • unlock fee apply if use non telstra sim.

      • -1

Or just remove the SIM card?

        • But what if i want to use an optus sim. Or a vodafone sim?

Still. Just remove the sim card?

          • -1

@xoom: Yup, throw that SIM card away!

            • +1

@muncan: Tablet has LTE conectivity function i want to use. How do i go about it without a sim card? By using my jedi powers?

              • @xoom: it's locked to Telstra so in order to use another sim you'll need to unlock the device first.
that said, if you bought any boost sim cards with the recent deals, they should work.

                • +1

@billsa: Whirlpool reports no-go for Boost:

                  Liability writes…
It is locked to Telstra, got a SIM error when I tried a Boost and a Woolies SIM.

I know a genuine Magnetbox, Panaphonic, & Sorny when I see one.

    • You soo sorny!

    • This is brilliant 😂

    • Its a phony. Or palsonic.

  • I think its the same as this review
    Orbic 8

    • Yep same one. The screen isnt the best as expected being HD and TN and the sluggishness would be the 3GB RAM.

  • +1

Its so unfortunate that there is no iPad Mini, Android alternatives. @clear do you have any recommendation 8" & 5G??

    • +1

There really isn't anything in the 8" space right now. A few budget tabs have made a come back but the factories are mostly focusing on 10.1-10.4" at the moment.

  • Does it have a gps?

    • +1

      It does have GPS.

  • Have bought cheapy 8" tabs before, covers wear out, if not a big name, u may have trouble finding new ones down track, more so if your kids r anything like mine

  • -2

the deal expired already, why post ? if it is still available. Any hero knows whether it is good for Google GPS at old cars? may stream musics as well?

    • Weird…. I thought start tomorrow 🤷

      • Offer valid from 11/01/2023 to 17/01/2023

        • Yeah but before you mentioned it, I'm pretty sure I saw it starts tomorrow (posted by op)

          • @edgar28: if the link is correct, then the time is over. I wish I was wrong.

        • .. Where did you get that from?

At the top of the link it says

          "Coles catalogues 25/01/2023 to 31/01/2023"

  • There's plenty of information on this on Whirlpool.

  • I know, I know, I'm an idiot,

But I see a lot of network bands and whatnot, can I make a normal phone call with this guy?

    • Yes it has calling, SMS etc.

      • Hmm, I don’t get SMS or phone calls on my iPad mini 4 with cellular, when I pop in my phone SIM card. So that’s just an Apple decision to not allow that, and the rest of the mobile world is carrying on fine?

        • Yeah apple been a bitch when it comes to those thing.

My original tab s, tab s4 now tab s7+ 5g. You can make calls and receive sms

          • @xoom: Sweet, I’ll give it a go. Just bought one. 😂

            • @muncan: Lemme know how you go, forgot to say my LTE Samsung doesn't do calls too (but does do SMS), hence my trepidation

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: Curious to know which one you have as even samsung website says you can on a tab s4. Though i have known you can do this since the original tab s.

                https://www.samsung.com/sg/support/mobile-devices/how-to-mak…

My guess if the android tablet has a dialer app. You can make calls with it.

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: I couldn't justify Telstra's $80 unlock fee for a $99 device. Just spoke with them hoping for leniency, and they can't see my IMEI on their unlock system! Wanted to use my Kogan SIM in this device while I'm home (most of the time) and switch the SIM to my phone when I occasionally leave the house.
Oh well, might as well activate the included Telstra SIM and wait out the 6 months so the unlock fee drops to $25… zzz

                • @muncan: If the IMEI is not in the system, you may never be able to unlock. (Unusual that Boost did not work. )
Just use phone hotspot. A 12-month SIM would cost you $99 to $150.
I don't see anything available like the 20GB/6-month plan included with the tablet.

      • Shit, really. That's kind of cool. Definitely gonna give it a thought, cheers boys.

      • Note that the included SIM does not allow calls, just incoming SMS and 20GB of data over 6 months. Nice!

  • Just got one, the unit is usable I was hoping for vRam. The battery is 6000 mAh according to Device Info

    • Dear Sir,

Can you pls try the Google GPS function? is it lagging?

      • +1

        GPS is working

        • thank you

    • It's been posted as a deal. There's some discussion below with Fozzie and myself recommending the Alldocube iPlay 50 from China being better value when on sale.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13286803/redir

Lenovo certainly has some pros, like it'll get Android updates, Widevine for Netflix HD and local warranty.

      • thank you!

  • +1

Got one, thanks for posting this, was looking for a decent 8inch tablet for kids that can actually work without breaking bank.

Had to call 10plus coles and finally was available in the Footscray one. Got one for 95$ as use Commbank offer spend 100$ to get 5$ cashback at Coles.

First impressions: tablet is fast, smooth scrolling as compared to the sluggish Lenovos M8 etc. Thats a big plus. On the other hand it feels heavy & I wish they could put 1080p screen on this one as processor can handle it easily but I can't complain at this price..

  • Have been searching around in WA and called up many stores…. The staff is not aware of such product

    • They are not aware.
I physically went into Coles, and asked the guy to rummage in the cabinet for tablets. He found two, and one was an Orbic.
Maybe I got lucky. I was willing to try every Coles I passed. But I would not bother phoning.

      • Yeah tried a few I drove passed during the weekend too….
Unable to find in the cabinet too

Phoning is bad, they either put you on hold for a long time or no one pick up, even if they pick up, they are able to say no straight away (most), one even transfer me to groceries section (medical tablet)

        • Did they ask how many milligrams you are after?

          🙃

          • @xoom: Surprisingly no, they asked me whether I would like an apple instead…..

Probably they are referring to pineapple? (Another ozbargainer calling…. Those serial phone caller should sit on pineapple)

  • anyone found good case for this one ? checked everywhere cant find.. the 5g model ones are not the same size i think

    • +1

Why you need a case? Besides the front screen, the back is pretty protected with a black plastic… um, case?

Now I'm tempted to find my pentalobe screwdrivers and pop the back open to see if I can get rid of that annoying camera bump.

      • i meant EVA foam case/cover for child proofing..

    • if anyone still looking for a cover/case for Orbic 4g.. i got solution for ya..
it fits well enough in the lenovo legion y700 case! both tablets dims are pretty much same. Paid 16$ for y700 case delivered via aliexpress and Orbic 4g fits magically in it.

  • +1

    Been using for few days….
It's faster than the teclast p80x (2gb ram), but in some occasions, the Orbic would hang (require force restart) VS p80x slow down / lagging.
Hope they come out with android 13 and fix the issue.

      • Oh yeah, the Orbic is "cool" compare to p80x which can go quite hot/ warm

  • Am using as a car GPS. Early on I had some random reboots, but not lately.
Turning off Bluetooth may have helped.
Now the GPS is getting unreliable. Frequently loses lock. Rebooting has not helped.
It is nice when it works. Anyone else?

    Am considering returning it.

    • wish you were in sydney, id get it off you
