  • Samsung CPU or Snapdragon CPU?

  • +2

    This or Samsung S21 FE?

    • +2

I am also thinking about it, but seems like my parents prefer a phone with a bigger screen

      • Same. I'm upgrading from s10e and not sure if I want one of these a s22 or go back to apple

        • +2

Pretty sure a73 is not much faster than s10e. If you can get a decent deal on the s22 they have a pretty good feature set - unless you're using CPU/GPU heavy apps, then the battery gets drained pretty quick.

    • If it's the Exynos 2100 in the S21 Fe then the A73 will be superior

      • Hi, why do some versions have the Exynos CPU in the phone? Is it a budget cut thing?

        • +3

It's Samsung's own chipset, so yeah cheaper for them to produce, but it is known to be laggy and have more throttling issue than the Snapdragon, au and non-North American phones tend to get the Exynos

          • @menvert: Thanks for explaining that. I always heard people say get the Snapdragon version, but I didn't know the difference between the two. So the A73 should have the Snapdragon CPUs, if so, it makes it easier to choose, but I am also guessing that some sites might advertise certain Samsung models as having the Snapdragon and you end up with the Exynos if you don't do your research properly.

    • In the same boat but realised S21 FE doesn't come with microsd. Would have gone with it otherwise

      • +6

Lack of microSD could be a deal breaker. Besides the storage, having microSD allowed for fast transfer to PC using a card reader. Transferring via USB cable is too slow.

    • -2

S21 FE. One's a flagship, other one is a midranger. Unless you need the bigger display the S21 FE is significantly better.

      • +4

        I don't think SE is a "flagship"

        • +1

Questionable whether it's significantly better too, considering the reported issues.

        • Fe is high midrange

      • -1

Is the S21 FE supposed to be positioned above the A73, or are they both about the same level?

        • Supposed above A73 below S22 but because of the CPU …………

          • @superforever: Yeah, I thought so. I don't really like the A73 or S21 FE even at these price ranges. Seems like the S20 FE was a better phone. It looks like the S21 FE is a step back. The current value for money in the midrange on this year's models seems to be crap. I might just end up buying a cheaper phone and see what next year's mid to mid-high end phones look like.

I've been looking at the Pixel 6a, A73 & S21 FE, but I don't really like any of them even at these deal prices. They're all average. I also took at look at the Pixel 6, but that also doesn't seem worth what the current prices are. It seems Samsung & Google have dropped the ball on their midrange phones. The Pixel 6 looks OK on paper, but people seem to say it's buggy from release.

Anyone got any recommendations on something cheaper to get to tide me over, or could there be some decent deal on high end, or mid-high end phones towards the end of the year?

            • +1

              @Ice009: What you don't like about A73?

            • @Ice009: Can you explain what exactly is the issue with the A73 (or the S21FE)?
I think the A73 especially is very good buying at $536….

    • S21 FE is 6.4', A73 is 6.7'

  • +3

    no dual sim.

    • -4

But, IF you compromise with not having a memory card it can be used for the second sim.

      • +6

        It's not a hybrid slot

        • I will make it a hybrid slot

  • I bought this from GoodGuys for $611 (GoodGuys discount + Giftcard 10% discount) weeks back. Wife loves the phone, camera setup is great even the selfi cam. Best thing is Android updates will be given by Samsung I think minimum for the next 3 years.
**Note Samsung does NOT give any Charger, factory screen protector sticked, earphones, phone case - all which I got my Oppo reno 10x zoom somtime back.
I recommend getting a 25W charger, coz for some reason the phone does not charge with my 45W VOOC charger.

    • 45W VOOC charger.

Don't they only work with oneplus and oppo phones? Unless they've recently changed it.

      • ya VOOC its a oppo charger. Just advising that a 45W charger might not work/recommended.

        • +2

Don't think the phone supports 45W charging. Samsung is still playing catch up with competitors when it comes to charging speed.

    • -1

Best thing is Android updates will be given by Samsung I think minimum for the next 3 years.

Updates dont really matter to a lot of people, heck I am still using android 8 smart phone

      • Android 8 phone , battery still works?

        • yea still decent
          10300 mAh

Ulefone armor 3 (not the fastest phone out there but it gets job done for me)

          • @USER DC: Depends on your need, some app won't run on android 8 anymore.

      • +4

I think a large number of people want both Android updates and security updates for as long as possible. I personally really like the fact that Samsung now offers up to 4 years of major Android updates and it will definitely be factoring that into my next purchase.
Not to mention corporate - they will most definitely value the increased support lifetime.

        • Especially if your using banking apps on the phone. Security updates important in that case.

    • So you pretty much have to buy a charger, screen protector etc.?

Do you have any recommendations on which charger to get that also isn't too expensive?

  • How are you getting 535? What's the coupon for it?

    • Ebay Plus members

    • +1

Coupon code is listed on the ebay page. Just below the click and collect. It says Save $60 on this item. Show me how

    • +1

      I think it's targeted. Here's the T&C's

Redemption. To redeem this offer during the Offer Period, enter the redemption code which starts with SNSMID, which is shown in your My eBay account on the desktop version of eBay.com.au, into the redemption code box during the checkout process.

  • shows up as $595.99 for me from Mobileciti eBay and i am ebay plus, am i missing something? is SNSMID… code for amazon only? i can only see coupon code PLUSAUG1

    • +1

Just went to the page and if you scroll down a tiny bit where it says "save $60 with ebay plus" and it'll show a personalised code beginning with OP's SNSMID. Then again maybe it is targeted, dunno.

      • yeah possibly targeted as i am only seeing " Take 5% off this item". bummer!

        • Didn't you check your eBay summary?

          • @superforever: yep sure did, only seeing 5% discount voucher

            • @kaykay4: My eBay summary didn't show PLUSAUG1 but have this SNSMID and the monthly $5 code.

Try online chat with support and see, their eBay summary quite broken, won't show anything before.

    • So I bought the phone, and then I get the code appear, so I think if you look at the page a few times it should come up after you refresh

  • Thanks OP got one. Must just be targeted. I get the code even though I don't have ebay plus. :)

  • Looks like a great all rounder. Looking for
    - Great daytime/night time photos
    - Fast processor
    - MicroSD storage

Looks like it ticks all the boxes!

  • Does Samsung phones in Australia have in built call recording ? Can someone confirm?

    • +1

No phones are allowed in built call recording except from China. This is due to privacy concern while google and apple monitor ever step you make with your phone.

      • Samsung do include call recording on their Indian variant phones and Indonesia as well if i am not wrong

    • You can download third party app that record calls but looks like they are being removed from play store

      • +1

I think its from Android 11 or 10 google removed the ability of any app to record calls. Call recording is now only possible if the manufacturer decides to include it and if call recording is not restricted in the region the phone sells in.

  • Great price, Ive had mine for a couple of months, great phone.

    • How is the battery life? Screen on time?

      • 6 to 8, but Im just doing reddit, youtube, music / podcasts. I have everything turned on. I don't use a black theme (tried it and hated it). 120hz screen on etc. But my reception isn't that great sometimes so that kills a bit of battery. But I don't really ever go by e-peen SOT stuff.

Took it off charge around 6am, its currently on 89% with 49m SOT, with 5 hours background. Did a podcast and reddit on the train and a few emails at work etc.

        • Good to know cheers.
I don't want to experience the notorious Samsung standby drain. Had it on my galaxy S7 years ago. Had to charge at least 3 times a day lol.
Good size phone but don't miss one bit of standby drain.

      • From what I have read, about as good as you can possibly get on an Android phone. 5000mah battery is quite large, not to mention the cpu is a midrange chip so it shouldn't draw too much power (compared to the higher end chips)

  • Mobileciti still sell dodgy US stock?

    • Not sure but they say 'AUSTRALIAN STOCK 100% Australian A-Tick Approved'

      • That basically screams grey import lmao. It's Australian stock ie shipped locally but definitely overseas model.

        • Australian stock AUSTRALIAN WARRANTY Manufacturer's Warranty

        • wouldn't be the first time they've done it

they all their Pixel phones they sell had Verizon stuff pre installed

          • +3

@Poor Ass: Arrived, with A-Tick sealed and serial number with suffix "ATS" and this is the Samsung bot replied.

Go to this page: Samsung Australia site.
Click on Create a Service Booking, then click on Continue.
Fill in the Serial Number (we can also use the IMEI of the device), then click on Validate. You’ll now be able to see the Complete Model code of the device
Check the suffix of the model code and see if it will match any on the list, and if it does we can now say that the unit is an Australian Variant Device:

            OPP and OPS - Optus
            TLP and TEL - Telstra
            VAU and VAP - Vodafone
            BSP - Boost
XSA, ATS and ASA - Open

            Checked from here

            https://www.samsung.com/au/support/your-service/repair-appoi…

  • Good alternative to the S21 and S21 FE for those after a bigger display phone.

If you don't mind a slightly smaller phone the S21 FE and S21 is, however, significantly better in every other way. Flagship SoC, flagship camera, much better feel, better haptic feedback, etc. The camera on this A73 is decent enough but is a toy compared to the S21 series.

    • S21 and S21 FE

      Exynos kill it.

      • Lol. I have an S21, runs excellent, haven't had any real issues.

        • My wife have S21, no issue so far but SD runs cooler and longer battery life.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/718047

          Some comments here

          • @superforever: It shouldn't have longer battery life. The Exynos 2100 and Snapdragon 888 are practically the same CPU, they differ in the GPU.

If anything the Exynos should have a longer battery life as its slightly slower

            • @greatlamp:

The Exynos 2100 and Snapdragon 888

              What Snapdragon 888?

              • @superforever: In the s21 FE qualcomm model? I thought that's what you were comparing to

                • @greatlamp:

In the s21 FE qualcomm model?

I don't think it is SD

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12526947/redir

                  • +1

@superforever: True, there was an SD version but it looks like that was 'version 1' - probably no longer available.

                    https://gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s21_fe_5g-10954.php

You can see in the spec sheet that there are 2 versions of the phone. You can also see how the two SOCs are basically the same. The Exynos 2100 is not made by Samsung, it is made by TSMC on 5nm. Any complaints about Exynos SOCs from the s20 and earlier are completely irrelevant.

I don't take those OZB comments as fact, the 5nm Exynos is a decent chip, these comments are just taking YouTubers exaggerated complaints of Samsung - the YouTubers themselves have not actually examined the two SOCs side by side, they just want clicks and to put out a video as quickly as possible. Most of them are spreading misinformation.

I also disagree the Exynos chip 'overheats'. To get hot enough to reach thermal throttling you need to run synthetic benchmarks that run the CPU and GPU at 100% for a long period of time. It is a completely unrealistic workload, and I would rather have higher clockspeeds in my CPU and not have it's performance limited because customers are worried about 'overheating'.

    • If only it was so simple.

A73 has better battery life, and crucially for some includes an SD slot (which was a non negotiable for me).

I hate that premium phones have less functionality than mid range or low end models from the same manufacturers.

  • Does this have an eSim?

  • I've had mine for a couple of months now. Came from a Note 10+ and there's not much difference except the camera is better and the screen is a little smaller. Great price though, hard to justify going to flagship for me now that this exists.

  • +4

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but this has the Snapdragon 778G chipset. Its a very good chipset, and the same one as in last year's Samsung A52s 5G. Manufacturers seem to be sticking to that chip, eg, Nothing Phone 1, Xiaomi 12 Lite, Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G, Huawei Nova 10 pro, Motorola Edge 20 (2021), Motorola Edge 30 (2022), Oppo K9s, all use that same chip for more than 12 months, and nobody has moved to the new snapdragon 7G1 chip yet, not sure why.

Personally I think I'd go with the Xiaomi 12 Lite over the Samsung A73, but its a tough choice.

  • Would all of these be Australian stock? Even the Mobile Citi one?

  • +1

Thanks I needed a new phone, still on my old pixel 2…

    • Ooo, can you let me know how you go? Still on my pixel 2, and seriously considering this one too..

      • +1

        Sure, it turns up tomorrow

        • Thanks!

    • Jumping from an old flagship to a new midrange?

      • +1

Yeah, but this pixel 2 I currently have is almost 5 years old now and starting to have problems. I'm sure a mid range new phone vs a 5 old year old flagship has its improvements.

  • Great phone for the price but have seen noticeable lag when opening larger PDF's, switching between some apps, etc. If I keep the usage light it does fine. Battery lasts me about 1 day with my usage or less if I'm hotspotting which is good enough for me. The S20FE battery life was terrible for me.

    • Any screen protector came with it like S21? A very thin one may not noticeable.

      • Negative. The one that comes on is meant to be peeled off because it has a tab, from memory.

  • Damn wish it had an esim

  • Is it dual sim?

    • GSMArena says:

Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Hybrid Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)

      • No sure about our stock.

    • Amazon, no.

      • I think no dual sim for australian stock, we also don't have 8GB version.
