32 bucks for 4? seems like a bit of a fist.

    Anyone had these?

I had high alcohol content beer in germany and china and it was like drinking wrong tasting wine(chugged it anyways). Does beer work past 7% ? Punishing headache too

Reckon you'd be better off with a vodka beer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8CFhaoi11Y

Alcohol in Aus is taxed more the higher the ABV. So this price is pretty good.

Never had the beer, but there are some absolutely amazing high ABV beers around. Chances are you have just had some shit ones, or you just might not like high ABV beer (which is totally fine too).

    • The higher the content, the slower to drink, the better to enjoy.

I've had these at the brewery and bought more because I dig them. They've got a sweet, thick caramel flavour to them and you'll definitely get an alcohol hit on the back half

    • Agree on the price. Craft beer has taken on some sort of high price aura in this country. As soon as it comes in a can with bright colours on the side, they double in price. I ack that this is probably a small independent brewery with low quantities etc. but I think the point still holds.

Regarding the high tax on high ABV, I drink this local beauty. Ginger Kid ginger beer from Harcourt Valley not far from Melbourne. It’s 8%, and $17/pk of 4.

      • I agree with the craftbeer Wayne-car tax.

But with ginger beer there might be a loophole.

According to this (2015) article, ginger beer at 4.5% is taxed at RTD (premixed drinks) price, where as ginger beer 8+% is taxed at the much lower wine tax

Better beers have more expensive ingredients.

        • in theory…

          • @jv: I am dubious of Deeds and their crazy prices

              Deeds and their crazy prices

              should be Done Dirt Cheap…

    • 32 bucks for 4? seems like a bit of a fist.

About $12 will be tax (possibly less for the small craft brewing discount).

Yep these will be thick treacle tasting beers.

They're intended to sip them, like a scotch. As they warm up, the aroma is really nice. They're a warm the cockles in a cold winter's night type of beer.

they mightn't be your cup of tea. Which is fine, more for us!

They actually have 20% off all beers on the site. So if this is too expensive, you can get a carton of the mid strength for $40.

Agree, the brewer has to mask the alcohol with either sweet or bitter flavours, so any nuance or complexity you'd expect from a craft beer tends to disappear once the ABV gets above 7-8%. In terms of crafties $32 isn't terrible, especially considering the booze content, but if it's actually enjoyable is another question.

      • Strong ales are a thing and have been for a long time, one of the best beers I've ever had was this - https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/315249/ (if not the best, it was delicious).

It's where barrel aging usually comes into play as well, to give more complexity. High alcohol is fine so long as you're sipping it.

I've had this beer and would rate it at $8 a can. Not a session beer so it's like a good quality scotch (closer to a rum in flavour) that you have as a single when you want quality over quantity.

Flavour notes: massive butterscotch hit, some cinnamon and spice from the hops. Texture is thick and molasses like. Coats the mouth. If a rum was aged in tawny Port barrels then hopped you might get something similar.

    • Lol beer doesn't taste good under 7%

  • Thanks Op - grabbed some to try and also some of the Gothic Imperial Stout, Shreddin IPA and Moutere Double DIP IPA.

People think nothing of paying $20 for a bottle of wine or double that for vodka. You can buy $10 / 4L cask wine but noone says' $20 is outrageous, I can buy wine for $2.50 a litre'.

This kind of beer is a different drink to 'slam it down at the end of the day' beer. Not for everyone. If you drink a couple of beers a day after work then I wouldnt drink this one; but if you sip a beer Saturday afternoon then give it a go

  • I can get 2 x 6 packs of Coopers Sparkling Ale from my local bottleshop for $36. I really don't see the appeal of all the high alcohol craft beers. A few I have tried have given me a dirty hangover.

    • Surprised it didn't give you backhair and a wife-beater…

    • +1

Here's some food for thought. Not too long ago in Australia Coopers Sparkling was considered a high alcohol craft beer…

      • Maybe if Coopers adds some chocolate or passionfruit, then the w@nkers can get onboard with it.

        • Welll they do already have an XPA, a Pacific Ale and had a limited release hazy so don't fall off your chair if they do decide to chase trends.

    • Yeah it would. These beers are not sessionable. I only have a few beers a week and one a day max so I like flavour bombs like this but if I wanted enough to get a buzz, this beer would be terrible

    • Try the Regency Red from Coopers, it's one of my favourites. $65 from First Choice. I think it might be a limited edition, get in quick. I too drink the sparkling and the green - in summer. But the Regency Red is a much more mature and flavoursome beer.

  • Thanks OP grabbed a 4 pack.

  • Really nice drop. Thanks OP
