TCL 20 R 5G 64GB $198 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ Harvey Norman

1090

Cheap 5g handset, TCL seem to be making good quality handsets. i have the TCL 20L+ that was a deal on here a while ago.
I had a bit of a play with the demo unit and its not that bad a screen for being a 720p, the 90Hz refresh rate make it nice and buttery smooth.

yes the cameras are on the crap side but for 5g and $198 its a good compromise all other handsets around the price from other on line retailers are only 4g that i can see without being shady.
this would be great for someone like myself that would like 5g, not really into photos and would be a decent handset to use. i guess this would be perfect for kids or to get that 5g connectivity.

UPDATE: Office works at same price. - spotted by Elijah

Type C and 90Hz are nice for this pricepoint. Good find OP. Would definetely look in to this if I needed to buy a budget phone.

Edit: Also MicroSD upto 1Tb according to spec on HN webstie. Nice touch!

4/64 is kind of… hmmm…. but you gotta cut back for that 5g

4GB ram is okay, in regard to storage. 128gb micro sd card for around $20 should do fine!

@WatchNerd: The Gerry the jerk lobbied for tax on items from overseas less than $1000 to be GST applicable. Must be nice from an ivory tower.

            • +4

@Caped Baldy: There should be a lot more tax paid on profits generated from sales to Australians in Australia and on Australian products exported. For example:

How your spiking energy bills are making foreign investors rich

I'm already not a fan of the liberal approach to sell shit for a quick buck

                • +2

@Caped Baldy: Do you think a foreign company making a profit on something sold to an Australian in Australia should pay less tax on the profit than Gerry?

                  • @shaybisc: Why not both?

                  • @shaybisc: That depends on the cost of collection would it not?

And implementation meant a lot of stuff that isn’t sold here just isn’t sold to Australia anymore.

          • +7

@WatchNerd: Here's an indication of his attitude:

Gerry Harvey says Australia needs a two-tier wage system to allow employers to pay foreign guest workers less than locals.

"Australia doesn't have cheap labour. Many overseas workers would be prepared to move here for a much better life and half the money Australians earn," he said.

"I've got horse studs and it's difficult to get staff.

budget phones min specs these days. it isnt too bad for use, ive got an A42 5g and game with it so it is fine.

    • +1

      iPhone 5 from 2012 didn't even have 720p

      • Yes on a 4" screen giving it 326 PPI. This phone has i think 269 PPI

  • +1

Got this and it is literally the fatest phone I have tried, so zippy for the base gui. Shits all over iphones. Not sure if it's the 90hz screen or the chipset.

Camera sucks though but it only cost me like $50 through vodafone so eh.

    • -3

      literally the fatest phone

I think you mean phat. It’s oh so phat, that lit 5G phone, eh.

Although I would seriously think about keeping it in the box until it’s improved its bowel habits… literally

  • -7

doesn't sound like a good deal with 720p screen and "kinda crap" cameras.

    • +8

It's crap compared to a Samsung S22 Ultra, but that costs $1,849

      I think it's a decent deal

    • +1

Anyone buying this for its camera should probably stay off tech. $198 gets you a smart phone that works decently. Hence, it's a bargain.

  • +1

Does anyone know if using a 5G smartphone for hotspots 24/7 gives us same 5G speed for those devices connected to it via wifi? My Boost 5G speed is 55Mps, Telstra NBN speed is 35Mps and Telstra 4G is 29Mps.

    • Proximity to this phone and what wifi type this phone output. Not counting congestion and how much load the tower is outputting. All variable factors.

    • In theory, wifi can go much faster than 55mbps (if that's your uplink speed; 5g should be able to go faster, but depends on where you are and how many people are using it). But then you've got interference from other wifi to consider, and you'd be sharing the uplink among multiple devices. Also, wifi adds latency which can be an issue if you're gaming/zooming. This is all true regardless of whether you're hotspotting or using a home wifi router, but a wifi router is designed for one thing, so is probably better at it than a phone hotspot.

    • +1

      Aussiebroadband 100MBs FTTH
Telstra on S21u 300 to 600 with towers around 1km away
But yesterday Comrade Al must have raised his red flag and speed become crap

    • I was wondering this too but more to use it overseas with a local sim and have the family connect to it while we're out and about. 1 thing to consider is that most phones only allow 10 connections I believe

      • +1

If you get a wifi repeater can resolve this max 10 connected devices problem.

    • +2

      ok

    • +6

Most are 7 inch? Please elaborate.

  • Owned the TCL Plex of the last deal, didn't last 1 year then power jack failure, can't say I'd recommend TCL.

    • +4

That's the ozbargain way, buy the cheapest junk in a particular category… Then keep buying the cheapest junk each time it fails and talk about how much of a bargain it was.

Rather than paying 3x more say, for something decent, with long software support, less chance of built in spyware and will most likely last 3x as long while having a better user experience the whole time.

I do understand though if $200 is absolutely all you can afford then this probably isn't a terrible option. Though personally I'd still be tempted to push the budget closer to $300 and get a Samsung A13 instead.

      • +1

A13 is better in most areas (screen, camera etc) but processor is also slower.

      • +4

Tell that to those of us who bought $1000 Samsung S21's to battle with dead areas in the screen and charging issues.

High price does not always equate to good quality.

        • I had an S21 for about a year (I tend to upgrade yearly, I know it's silly, but I can). Haven't heard of this one, I certainly never had any issues personally.

Samsung warranty is pretty good though, I'd be surprised if you took it to a Samsung store and showed them a non responsive screen if they'd just tell you bad luck (if it's within the 2 year warranty at least… Which I guess it has to be considering the S23 isn't out yet.)

    • +1

Do you mean the charging port? You can try use a magnetic charging cable.

    • +3

my tcl plex has been going strong for the last 2.5 years. just recently the battery died. ordered a new battery from Aliexpress.

Phone is really great with 6gb RAM and a decent processor - Snapdragon 675. So I dont want to put it in the bin. So trying to revive it

      • +3

I still love my TCL Plex. Still going strong.

        • +2

+1, brilliant phone for the 250$ price I paid.

If my screen didn't crack I wouldn't have upgraded

  • Does this include FM Radio? Gsmarena states "unspecified". This review page https://droidchart.com/en/tcl/tcl-20-r-5g-20r5g-7430 says that it does.

    • +1

i wouldnt be suprised if it does, my TCL 20L+ didnt mention radio and yes i have it, although one needs to use wired headphones.

  • -2

So people get upset about an Aussie company but couldn't care less that this is probably made by child labour? Are you sure the bad guys are HN or is it yourselves?

    • +3

Lol how stupid. Phones are now made via assembly lines and factories only employ adult age workers because they can be properly trained. I'm not even getting into the ethics and legality stuff here, but you simply show no intelligence and provide dumb comments.

Oh, if you're trying to whitewash HN then go for it. You may as well post more HN deals yourself.

      • His point is valid though, whether it's child Labor or just horrible working conditions i.e the suicide nets on Foxconn factories that everyone is well aware of.

People whinge and complain about how they are way too morally upstanding to buy from HN… But also buy products made in these conditions.

        • +1

That's because there's no alternative phone factory. There are alternative retailers here though

          • @Raynes: There never will be alternative "phone factories" while one can get away with working conditions like that and another has to pay and uphold decent conditions.

    • He's right, TCL actually stands for The Child Labour

Security updates from TCL are questionable as my TCL 20 Pro 5G has not received any security updates this year 2022.

    • +4

This would be a concern for me as well. But for a$198 phone would expect much of any support from a software update aspect. I would suspect your TCL 20 pro was more expensive and rightly you should expect security updates as a minimum

    • I picked one of those up from BigW recently and it has the android security patch from Feb 2022

      • Okay, that's good. Not sure why my wont update. I may log a ticket with TCL if I can't get it to update.

  • Build Glass front? What the hell does that mean? Probably not Gorilla Glass

  • Big W has the Samsung A13 but locked to Voda for $239 or would this TCL or the Motorola E7 be a better option? I know the A13 has a better battery and camera but doesn’t work as smooth as the Tcl if i read above comments correctly. Also not sure how much it would cost to unlock the A13 $12.50? Just going by the unlock comments from the Motorola E7 for $79 woolworths post.
