HBO Max - Standard Plan, 1 Year Subscription A$68 (Brazil VPN Required)

800

Credit to the previous poster - sorry the deal got unpublished!!

Managed to get this to work using VPN via Brazil. I couldn’t get it to work via Argentina for some reason (it would just hang on the payment screen). To obtain this deal:

  1. Log in to Brazil via your VPN (note - PIA seems to be blocked. I had success with Surfshark)
  2. Go to HBO Max website and subscribe to the standard plan
  3. Enter your payment details.
  4. Note, Brazil requires something called a CPF number - I generated one using this site - https://www.generatormix.com/random-cpf-generator

That should be all that you need. You will need a Smart DNS to view any content - easy if you have one of those lifetime subscriptions to get Getflix.

For Android users - you will need to side load the app
For iOS users - you will need a US iTunes account to download the app - here are some instructions (https://www.crn.com.au/news/how-to-download-us-apps-in-austr…) - I haven’t personally tried these instructions as I created a US iTunes account a few years ago.

Confirmed obtainable. Managed to install it onto my iPad!

      • Put 8.8.8.8 in the Preferred DNS server field and 8.8.4.4 in the Alternate one on your router will fix the problem.

  • +1

Done with Nordvpn, all good, streaming with us VPN, 4K quality. Thanks OP…

  • ok, please help someone who doesnt speak your language so you may need to dumb it down for me. I have a samsung serif. Apparently i cannot get nord vpn as a app on the tv. I do have a nord vpn subscription. Anyone know how i can watch hbo max on my tv? Give a step by step? i did see some mention of side loading. not to sure what that is or how to do it etc. TIA ps thanks poster for the deal i have wanted a yearly hbo subscription.

    • Have you tried other SmartDNS/VPN providers?

      • i guess because i paid for the nord vpn for the year i thought to use that. i have not tried any others

  • Thanks so much! FYI this won't work with an existing account, you must create a new account otherwise at the payment step you will get the error "Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later".

    • Semi-related… Guides online show you can pay "from outside USA", using Google Pay… First you'd setup an account, then choose a subscription. But all the screenshots aren't valid. I think it's changed semi-recently.

  • What do you think - would this be worth cancelling Binge for content-wise?
I use Binge on my Sony Android TV (got Nord). We have a Firestick upstairs and Binge doesn't have a Firestick app so that would be one upside.
So pro: 4k, cheaper, Firestick app
con: VPN must be switched on - maybe less content? idk.

    • +2

i haven't done an exhaustive comparison but HBO Max content seems as good, if not better, than Binge, particularly recent WB movies - ie. Dune is there right now, and The Batman is promised soon after US theatre run.

      • +1

        48hrs from now!!

  • I haven't tried these yet (may try later in the day), but it seems like Romania or Bulgaria may be cheaper for the annual fee? (~40 euros).

Update: Both countries not accepting my credit cards!

    • +4

Update 2: After a bit of trial and error, I somehow managed to subscribe to Romania through the app on Android, but ended up as $46USD ($61.56 on my card). Tested US VPN and it works fine :)

      • Good one!

      • Which VPN did you use? The Romania server is not working with HBO Max

        • I used expressVPN for mine, but as mentioned above it was a bit of trial and error because half the time it wasn't working. I think my process was something like:
          1. Use US play store account to get HBO max app
          2. Connect to romania server, open HBO max and try let it connect
          3. Change to US vpn and subscribe through the app with my US play store account and it somehow showed up as 46USD

Sorry can't be more exact because I was just playing around until it worked!

          • @frogduck: Nah,it's all good. I have subscribed via Google Play in the past. they accepted my debit card. I was looking for a cheaper way to subscribe instead of going through the USA.

            • @Charbel91: Ah, worth a shot playing around then I reckon. Although if too much of a hassle, then the Brazil one might work more easily. Also The Batman is coming on April 18 if that's something you're interested in!

  • So I've managed to successfully install the app on my Sony TV using the send files app and downloading the latest HBO Max version from apk mirror. However, after connecting to NordVPN and opening the app, it basically freezes on the main screen. It's literally unplayable. I also opened the app while not connected to NordVPN and although it says "not available in your region" it also freezes.

    Any ideas ozbargain?

    • Which version of hbo did you get? There is an Android TV version if you didn't get that

      • Ahhh this is probably the reason why!

I was using a half broken screen google pixel and just downloaded the latest one on this list:
        https://www.apkmirror.com/?post_type=app_release&searchtype=…

Looking at it now on the PC and correct me if I'm wrong, but I should have got the 3rd one on the list: HBO Max: Stream TV & Movies (Android TV) 52.10.0

        • That's the one I've been using :) good luck!

    • U may also be having dns issues, open dns (free) works best with my surfshark vpn app

  • Wasn't Argentina cheaper or get slugged with tax
    Thought i saw it recently.

Shouldn't need to sideload wanted a native app for Google TV

    • +1

Add 65% tax for international purchases from Argentina, otherwise they would be the cheapest option. I believe next cheapest would be romania / bulgaria, followed by Brazil.

In regards to sideloading - HBO max is not available in Australia / Australian Play store, so you either need to use a US play account, or sideload it. For now i've sideloaded it onto my nvidia shield.

  • Has anyone been able to add / edit profiles in HBO Max? I've tried on my Android TV, Mobile and Tablet and all can open the profiles, but when I hit save, it doesn't do anything?

    • +2

I did that on my pc… All good…. 5 profiles

      • Alright cool, will try again on my PC, Thanks!

  • +1

Hey guys, which apk for HBO max for pixel 5, assume this one works?
HBO Max: Stream TV & Movies 52.15.0.53
    Cheers
    Edit nvm that works :)

  • Can this be done with an Xbox? I'd rather not have to get an Android TV box if I can help it.

    • Haven't tried it on my xbox, but your best bet may be using the edge browser and going to the HBO Website. However I think your issue would be the VPN, unless you VPN your router (or use the hotspot method from another PC with a VPN).

      • I think I can handle the VPN side. I was hoping to use an app somehow or perhaps Plex or Kodi if possible. I'm not sure if they offer that sort of thing.

        • Apparently there is a HBO max app for xbox, but not sure we can get it in our region.

          • @frogduck: Thanks. I was just looking up Kodi addons myself. I'll have to check it out later.

  • Anyone else been able to get past the 'oops' error after clicking the signup button? I'm using CyberGhost VPN

    • That means ur vpn is blocked by HBO

  • Nord VPN is working great for me.. theres a deal posted very recently 96% cashback if anyone is after one.

  • The bloody android tv app signs ya out a lot, then takes a few goes to try and log in..
FFS. Wronh email address or password, or get the message session expired (logging into USA)

    • Haven't had this issue with mine. The issue we've had is random freezing. Possibly/probably related to the VPN.

      • Yeah it's generally pretty good and happy how well it actually works, probably just the app a bit slow sometimes.

  • This deal makes no sense. If you're going to use a VPN, why not just torrent what you want to watch?

    • Ha, it's not 2008 anymore, try finding anything. Not worth infection your PC going to those sites.

Pretty easy using a VPN, Nord is +90% cashback quite often for 3y, works well on google TV etc.

      • -1

Um, you can find everything on there. And you won't get a virus with good AV. Same rules apply today as in 2008.

        • -1

          Ok. Go for it.

Bit dumb saying the deal doesn't make sense.. HBO for a year for $65 is a pretty good deal for a proper streaming service, if you can set it up on your hardware (or use PC browser) and have a VPN.
How much time and size is a 4k Dolby Atmos download these days for something you'll probably watch once.

          PS. Got an AV

          • @G-rig: 4K is over-rated. Unless you have a screen that's 4 times bigger than the one you watch HD on, in my case (64") I'd need a 130" screen to appreciate the difference.

            • @Mondorock: would agree with you if watching on a 32"-40" or smaller.
Easy to tell the difference on a 65". Dolby Atmos is also great on the Samsung Q950A via Google TV.

suppose you are still downloading 720p and mp3s from limewire :P.
I did check the BT 'channels' a year or two ago, need to sign up onto most and usually bung search results. Nowhere near like it used to be when they were new / less illegal.

              • @G-rig: Couldn't be easier, Google TV still got the USA VPN going when you fire it up and strait into it.

  • "Your session has expired, please log in again."
Anyone getting this, seems very often?
    (Google tv).
Force stop the app. Try again, says the same thing..Then can't sign in, email or password incorrect.

Seem to have to log into it via Brazil, unless it doesn't like the particular USA server. Probably just the buggy app.

  • Unsure if there is a glitch going on,but I signed up via Argentina through Google Play and it only charged me $29.99 USD = AUD $42.35 for one year. Via Brazil it's USD $45.15

    • Don't you get slugged with tax from Argentina?

      • Honestly,I didn't get slugged with anything. it charged me in USD instead of Pesos for some reason.

        https://ibb.co/xDP0d1C

        • score.. sounds alright hey
I just paid directly on the site, may have been better as far as the app functionality to be able to pay through a provider or Google hey.
I side loaded 'HBO Max: Stream TV & Movies 52.15.0.53' onto the Google TV, i think when different vpns change it requires to relog in every so often - hard to pin point it unless the login expires / times out routinely.
Pretty good overall for $65 for a year anyway.

        • How did you purchase through Google Play. Wouldn't be Able to with an Aus Google account?

Getting Bloody tiresome logging in all the time and takes 10 min fking around most times due to the session expired.. diff VPNs must confuse it with this rubbish version on the Google TV. Nord also gives U a random USA server too, but Think have to log in with Brazil turned on first. PC and mobile were fine.

          Cheers

Edit maybe they've blocked it - "we're having trouble switching profiles. Please try again'. So maybe it only works with the native signup.

Just a rubbish app, probably can't get money back from ccard company

          • @G-rig: I downloaded the apk here (did it on my Android phone) https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/warnermedia-direct-llc/hbo-max…

Signed up for an account and went to play something but it told me to subscribe so it opened Google Play.

I'm using Nord, Kansas server. Try that.

            • @Charbel91: Cheers did all that, I think it's just the way that app works on google TV (not perfect, a
bit sluggish etc. The latest version doesn't work but seems to be all good now. I sent HBO an email so maybe they looked at it, but didn't get back to them once they asked for more info like zip codes etc. Probably have to go on the Brazil chat (but then sus if typing in English).

Anyway perhaps the issue was the VPN always changing, I also use Nord and will just use Kansas City as well (didn't realise you could search cities in the Google TV app, as it looked more dulled compared to the PC version).

It's good Google TV remembers the VPN status and it's on for next time.

              Cheers

  • Anybody tried this VPN signup trick recently? I’ve tried multiple cards and nothing works - I think they may have caught onto people using international credit cards.

    • I managed to sign up last month using Nord, haven't used it for a week, logged in tonight and my email address is not recognised. Has a "-" in the name which had me thinking if they stopped the special character or alternately they may have canned my account… :( will wait for the Brazil support to get back to me.

      • What bank/payment method are you using? I’ve tried Macquarie, Citi, 28 degrees, Revolut…won’t accept any cards I try.

        • +1

I believe it was Bankwest Platinum (fee free and no overseas exchange rate charge)

  • Oh may have to try this again - my 1y ends in 5 days.
    Easist if it just resubscribes

  • Seems like I won't need to do anything and the direct debit for the next 12 months will go ahead automatically.

After your 12-month discounted period, your subscription will automatically renew each year at the then-current subscription price for the HBO Max yearly plan in the applicable country on a recurring basis, unless you cancel before the renewal. To cancel your subscription, see Subscription in your settings of HBO Max.

  • Hmm revolut and 28d not working.

It was not possible to add this payment method. check

  • Here’s exactly what worked for me:

5 April 2023, I used the free Tunnelbear VPN app on Mac to visit HBO Max Argentina at https://www.hbomax.com/ar/es in a private tab.

I created an account and subscribed to the 12-month option for ARS 5,999 (about A$43).

I used Citibank debit MasterCard (with no foreign exchange or transaction fees). HBO didn’t ask for a billing address.

I was able to start watching HBO Max immediately. I use smartDNSproxy to access the US streaming catalog with full 4K quality.

On 5 April my card was instantly charged a holding fee of about $1.50, which disappeared after a couple of days.

On 13 April my card was charged ARS 10,438.26 or A$73.95. I assumed this was the dreaded 74% sales tax, but it’s still good value for a year of HBO even after tax. This brings it to around the same price as Brazil, but without the CPF hassles.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Four days later, on 17 April, my credit card was REFUNDED the sales tax amount, A$30.34. This was refunded as US dollars (US$20.28) rather than the original charge of Argentinian pesos, but to my fee-free Citibank card it’s all the same.

Just sharing the exact steps that worked for me to get a year of HBO Max for A$43.61.

Has anyone else got a refund of the sales tax or heard of such a thing happening before? I would love to know which ingredient in my secret recipe triggered the refund.

    • +2

      I had something similar happen.

27th of April I signed up to a new account advertised at ARS 5,999 for a year with an Argentina VPN, used my Up account. Have since used existing Getflix account to watch on Apple TV and VPN on my iPad.

Was immediately charged 17.4ARS holding (still pending) and 10,438.26 ARS. This morning I was refunded 22.13 USD.

  • Has anyone found a working APK for android phone yet? There are a few on APK mirror but doesn't install. Will test the android tv one soon but this seems to be the version needed:

Max: Stream HBO, TV, & Movies 1.0.1.8.

The website redirect to google play store, no good in Aus but can only change countries once a year?

    Cheers

  • Can't seem to log in, and it seems that Max is only accessible in the US at the moment.

We anticipate that Max will be available in Latin America and the Caribbean by the end of 2023. Stay tuned for more info.

    https://help.max.com/US/Answer/Detail/000002518

Edit: It seems there are two entities still but it's a bit of a cluster. So the new app isn't applicable (can't log into Max), and HBO max doesn't like USA VPN but still works on Brazil. I was able to install apps from the play store with new profiles/payment methods from those countries.

  • +1

Has anyone recently signed up for HBO Max following instructions on this post? I can't seem to signup. Got DNS setup and have Brazil VPN running.

    • EDIT: I managed to sign up via Argentina HBOMax. I am able to watch on my laptop via Argentina VPN (via Urban VPN) - extremely blurry. :(
I couldn't seem to log into the HBO Max app on Nvidia Shield Android TV. Does anyone have a solution?

    • you don't need VPN to watch it - just to subscribe. you can use a 'smart DNS' service such as dns4me.net once you're subscribed (this should make it less 'blurry' for you)

  • What exclusive content on there?

  • Anyone still able to subscribe? I’ve tried all the cards I have but all failed. Using Windscribe as a VPN.
