Not trolling, just want to know. Why would I need this if I have a mac?

You don't. Unless you want resource hogs installed.

Same for Windows users, you don't need this.

In case you install software without being a software nerd.

Mac has plenty of malware, but none of it is "automatic" .

Just because the user has to manually install and manually run it; doesnt mean those type of people arent out there.

Not many easier ways to slow a computer down and reduce SSD life than installing Norton

    • I still have nightmares from years ago helping many friends and colleagues "fix" their PCs, first thing to check, is Norton installed? Yes - uninstall Norton, almost always the root cause of their issues.

Seems like $7.99 of money wasted, use Windows Defender, it will be better than this, guaranteed.

The new crypto miner still makes it a big "no"; but if you're comparing the old engine to the post 2012 engine, there's not even a contest.

As soon as norton scrapped their product and started from scratch, it became quite effective, and very light.

Windows Defender is trash if you play around with things enough. Mainly its heuristics engine.

I can run a RAT through and obfuscator just once, and Defender stops detecting it.

Norton requires at least 3 passes before it stops flagging.

Id still not recommend it, because BitDefender exists without a crypto miner and with even better engines, but I find a LOT of techs who didnt keep up with app development and wrote norton off because of their 'dark 5 years'. Prior to 2005 (the 'golden sheild' icon era) and post 2010 (new engine beta, and development) its really rather impressive.

It just spent 5 years destroying performance, mainly because of its javascript blocker, and people put their blinders on, and stopped looking into why.

Is this the version with the built in crypto miner?

    Edit: appears so https://www.howtogeek.com/777952/norton-360-antivirus-now-mi…

    Please don't use this.

  • The only Norton product worth using was Norton Commander back in the MS-DOS days.

  • Norton = nope

Common sense and built in software is generally enough

Yep, a VM, flypaper.exe, wirehark, and a registry monitor is usually enough to test your random EXE's before you let them out of the sandbox.

    Thanks for posting this.
I have not used Norton for the last two years or so, but was always impressed with their virus signatures, Sonar (behavioural analysis), and firewall. But what I like the most is their file Insight feature which give an instant overview of the popularity and safety rating of any executable file you download off the internet.
I never liked their browser extensions though, and their yearly account auto renewal after capturing your CC details is shameful. But their core product is good, and I am interested if they will incorporate any Avast and Avira technologies from their recent acquisitions.
Purchased, and will give it a spin soon.
