Belkin Conserve Valet USB Charging Station $19.95 + $7.95 Shipping from Catch of The Day

152

Charge up to 4 devices (I've never tried more than 3) at the same time and no need to unplug it as it will shut off automatically when all devices are fully charged.

I got this for $32.95(inc shipping) on the last deal by AGL that was posted on here some time ago. This is a good charger and does the job, but every now and then it will not shut off automatically, and on "simpler" devices (like a usb bluetooth headset or another usb charger like Anker) it shuts off too early. It's a lot neater than a bunch of chargers on a power board anyway.

As for COTD, they're not bad save maybe when they get (if they get) OzBargain'd. There was one time it took a month for an item to be delivered. I've bought heaps of stuff already off them and the most recent one took 4 days to get to me.

  • I bought one too… :)

I just put my order in! Somehow I also ended up with a box of caramel bunnies? Damn shipping cap :P

  • Got mine during the AGL sale and this thing won't charge iPad.

    • +1

iPad requires 10w. A USB 2.0 port will output a maximum of ~5w, with most devices able to charge with less. So this charging pad most likely has an output limit of 5w.

      • useful to know…. thanks

        • Funny how I've mentioned it won't charge an iPad then everyone else came out of the woodwork LOL.

      • It will probably charge it, just very slowly and only when the ipad is off.

    • +1

Even though it says not charging, it is in fact charging… at an extremely slow rate.

  • Agreed, ipad recommended charger is 10W but this is not a requirement.
I've charged my ipad using a standard 5W charger and it works fine, only takes a little longer than usual.

    • As in 2x longer?

A bit of a pointless device!

Pay $28 for this Belkin thing - plug an adapter into your phone, then charge it.

Pay nothing, use the standard charger (supplied with your phone) - plug the adapter into your phone, then charge it.

It's a lot neater than a bunch of chargers on a power board anyway.

I don't reckon it's "neater" - it's messier having this ugly great thing on the bench rather than a tiny charger cable. So instead of a "hidden" adapter on a powerboard, you have this horrid looking thing on show continuously LOL

Really, this is just moving the "ugliness" of the chargers up into full view, but having a semi-hidden tray for cable management.

This is a good charger and does the job, but every now and then it will not shut off automatically, and on "simpler" devices (like a usb bluetooth headset or another usb charger like Anker) it shuts off too early

This "feature" is a load of bollocks. The phone or ipad or whatever already has an inbuilt charge regulator. There is no need for any cutoff in an external device - if fact I highly doubt this thing has one anyway. All it's doing is checking the total current draw and when it drops below a certain amount it's switching off. But that is pretty much how a normal switchmode power supply works anyway.

    • depends how many devices you need to charge… this will free up two slots on my powerboard, as I need to charge 3 devices overnight….. would also be useful if staying in hotels, I would imagine

      • +2

It's actually quite bulky so travel around with it could be a pain.

        • probably not so useful if staying in hotels then :)

You're kidding? You'd pay $28 for this thing, rather than paying for a $5 powerboard? ROFL

        • powerboard on powerboard is not good…. I have an 8 socket under my bed….

          squeezebox
          Lamp
          leccy blanket/fan depending on season
          2 mobile phones
          tablet
          home phone
          tv

I now will hopefully have freed up two of those….

powerboard on powerboard is not good…. I have an 8 socket under my bed….——

          Is this funny or what?

My friend, essentially that's precisely what you are doing with this thing. Extending same wall socket supply to charge multiple devices.

This is simply a replacement for a powerboard, maybe a slightly prettier / more expensive version if you like.

PS: I think with the low power that these devices use you could easily charge 10 of them on extensions before you start causing serious issues. Can some electronic guys pls work the safe numbers ?

        • maybe a slightly prettier

          I'm happy with that….

        • RE: Powerboards daisy-chained. You will only run into issues if the first board becomes overloaded. This is pretty rare unless you are plugging heaters, kettles, microwaves, etc in. Most PC/IT devices don't pull enough power to overload them unless you have a large quantity.

As an example, one of the rated boards I use is a 4 port that will support 1500w, with all of my desk + entertainment unit plugged in, it doesn't even get close.. But if I put the toaster, coffee machine and microwave on, it flips off.

    • I would rather have one power cord running from the powerboard/outlet to a main device than have 3 cables from 3 chargers dangling. I tend to charge my devices at the same time, usually overnight. The usb cables can be looped around to make it neat.

The power cutoff feature means for me no overcharging and overconsumption of electricity. It's very easy for me to leave appliances plugged in knowing they still draw electricity even when turned off. But like you said it COULD be a load of bollocks. Maybe I just like to fool myself..

As for portability, I don't think it was meant to be that? Well, I wouldn't bring it with me on trips anyway.

This device actually works for me but then again it may not for others.

Fool me once and shame on you, fool me twice and shame on me, after my last experience with COTD I would never buy anything from them even if my life counted on it, and I suggest you avoid them like you would gang rape.

    • +6

Shame on you for not explaining your neg properly! Shame shame shame!!!

      • 2 people dont like derryn hinch? o 0

        • maybe they are kiddy fiddlers?

  • +2

Don't know why anyone would want this considering each device you own comes with it's own charger. And it's fug and clutter-y LOL.

  • +2

Looks like a four port charger (<$8 below) in a tupperware container!

    • +1

That does looks like a cheaper alternative, but I have trouble trusting cheap eBay stuff from China. Cheaper doesn't always mean better value.

      • +7

pretty much everything is from China now

        • True that.

  • Its a device for charging devices.

DSE is selling this at $29.95, not waiting for the shipping

  • got this from agl, it did charge my ipad1 but not fully as it shuts down automatically in a few hours. it did the same for my iphone 4. In short, if you only need charging for maybe less than 4 hours then this good be a good device. from memory it took longer to charge my iphone 4 compared to the iphone charger.

    • +1

So, if you don't mind that it's a pretty useless charger, then it's not too bad as a charger?

      • In my case, I prefer using the charger that came with the ipad 1 and iphone 4. It is not a bad concept but I wanted a full charge quicker and not cut off after xx hours.

  • Buy a powered USB hub for $10 and it will do the same thing.

    • But but but this is soooooo much better and people think i am so superior if i have this. Lol

  • I bought two of these things (I wanted to consolidate the power outlets and civilise the chargers on my desks). It is easily one of the worst pieces of design I've seen in a decade or more. It frequently fails to charge at all, then when it does charge something like a phone it goes until the phone is charged then turns off letting the phone run down again. No override, it's dreadful. I just plugged the phone in again (it's about 1/2 run down) and the damned thing won't charge at all, won't even turn on; I'm thinking of going for a refund with these.
