Aaah. so they will continue to mark up petrol 8c till the end of Jan. Good to know.

So i guess BP and the independants will be 8 cents a litre cheaper?? ….. ah no. They do will gouge just as much as the others. Don't blame the supermarkets for trying to get people into their stores. If they truly were marking petrol up by 8 cents, everywhere else would be 8 cents cheaper.

Depends where you are … Our Shell has been 6-8cents more than the Caltex, about 400m away from the Shell, for ages now… Though up in Brisbane I know of Shell garages cheaper than our Caltex.

    • My local service stations maintain prices with a cent or two of each other, regardless of whether they're Caltex, Shell, Mobil or BP. The 8c discount is not funded by higher fuel costs: it's funded by profit margins on the groceries people buy. That's why Caltex and Shell are not automatically 8c dearer than their non fuel voucher competition.

Another month of artificially high fuel prices again… :(

    Happy New Year everyone…

Good point. I work at Coles Express. People should note it's the biggest lie that with 8 cents voucher people are saving money on the fuel. In stead, Coles makes even more than usual. From my observation, the discounted price is virtually the same, and nearly half of the people don't have a voucher when they purchase fuel!

      • +5

Of course its nearly the same @ 8c for say $1.50 per litre it's only a saving of 5.3%.
average small car has say 35L tank so that would cost $52.50 with a discount you's save $1.86 - not even the value of a coke.

And you know what your shopping they stung you more then that.

Here (WA) we have a government enforce price reporting system which means we can look online for accurate prices, and the variation today from the 'average' to the cheapest is 7.5c {metro avg = 139.4, CBD cheapest = 132.9} seem like a familiar number? Yep if the cheapest outlet is 'about' 8c less then the average outlet then I could safely assume that most of them could give an 8c discount without requiring a 'voucher' if they wanted to.

Don't know about Coles but when Woolworths do this it works for LPG too, and it makes quite a high % drop then (around 12-13%).

        • +1

Can use Coles Car Insurance coupons with Coles 8c/litre off to get 16c/litre off on LPG at Coles. I have been filling my LPG tank for less than $20 using this for sometime now. Definitely works across Vic.

At current LPG prices this is a 30% savings.

        • If you save 8c per litre on 35L tank, isn't that $2.8 savings? :S

      • +3

For my area, the cost of undiscounted woolies is actually 1 cent cheaper than BP. At 8 cent for about 40 litres I save about $3.20 so its actually quite good. I fuel up at woolies regardless If i have a voucher or not cause they're about the same as the others in my area (if not cheaper by 1-2 cents)

  • Well I reckon its an ok deal. We combine this with an 8c voucher from the coles source mastercard (which has no annual fee, costs us nothing per year) so we get 16c off per litre. So yes its only a couple of bucks but why not take advantage if it's working for you!

    • How do you get a 8c voucher from Coles Source Mastercard? we only get 4c vouchers….

  • +1

For us too in WA it saves money, and is definitely cheaper than what we were paying before….

For LPG its great. price rarely fluctuates between chains and is around 58c. Ive got a factory 90L tank so even filling up 3/4 or around 70L im saving $5.60. Only vaild at the Woolies Caltex corporate stores though and not the licenced ones.

    • Great news for LPG buyers.

    • Yep, these 8c discounts are fantastic for LPG users. Same discount as petrol/diesel, but with a starting price of $0.65 instead of $1.35/1.50. Marvelous. As a bonus I always run my LPG tank to near empty and have a reserve of petrol to make sure I'm not stranded. Difficult to do with a petrol or diesel only vehicle as there's a risk of running out of fuel.

  • I love the way people say this rubbish about raising prices, cheapest for the 6 months up till today was about ~ 129.9c, and last few weeks its been 130.9

but not for coles express who have been 4c/L more expensive than the cheapest basket of fuel stations in WA

      • The Coles Express near my house (Duncraig) is almost always the cheapest in the area - before the discount.

  • all these extensions…they should just make it a permanent 8c discount ;)

  • So with my Coles Car Insurance 3x coupons I will continue to get 2x 8c = 16c/litre off. Fantastic. No they don't give you 3x 8c nor do they give you 3x 4c their system actually gives you 2x 8c. Please don't ask why they just do, I guess 24c off per ltr would be a bit excessive. And, given I use LPG 16c/litre off means I can continue to fillup for less than $20.

    • Coles Insurance works by tripling the difference. so 8c-4c = 4c. then 4 x 3 = 12c 12c +4c = 16c. It's retarded but w/e. You're better off saving the vouchers for when the discount drops back down to 4c/L.

      • Thanks for the explanation.

      • The insurance vouchers are only 8 cent a lite off vouchers. So regardless of what other receipt you have the insurance voucher still is only 8 cents. Even thought it says triples, it is always 8 cents. If you look at the last four digits of the vouchers they say 0808 (8 cents) or 0404 (fpr the normal 4 cents receipts), they can actually go up to 40 cents a litre off (rare event though) i have been combining 8 cents off normal receipt, another 8 insurance receipt and another 2 cents off in store to get 18 cents off. You should be able to combine source mastercard as well. Been filling up 70 litres, which takes off about $12.50 off per fill.

I've said it before and I'll say it again… don't forget you can still buy 2 x $20 iTunes cards for $30 at Coles Express (a 25% discount until 11th January).

When you fill up using the 8 cent Coles discount voucher and buy the iTunes cards you will get an additional 2 cents per off litre taking the saving up to 10 cents per litre. A double bargain!

  • Yeah we are lucky in w.a wth fuel watch so we can just go onto the web to find the cheapest coles express, caltes etc

  • I always buy my milk from Coles express to get the additional 2c off…because I use LPG it works out to approx $2.50 discount and milk for free (when filling 90 litres).

Side note: why aren't more car makers offering LPG engines? I could never go back to ULP.

    • Because subsidy on LPG is supposed to end soon. That will take prices up nearly to ULP level.

      • I always though LPG was a tad weaker in "strength" and also shorter lasting in kilometres per tank (of same size) than ULP? Wouldn't the move to change the price of LPG to ULP levels be unreasonable to many van users? :S

But then again, when has fuel prices ever been reasonable in Australia. =.=

        • The new Falcon LPG that is coming out, actually has more power on the LPG, as technology has come a long way with LPG. Direct injection makes a big difference.

        • LPG systems come in 4 Generations. First gen was the ye olde systems people used in the 70s and 80s. Stinky, inefficient, no feedback loop for gas metering. Second gen added monitoring of emissions to make sure the approximate right amount of gas was added. Still inefficient. Third gen is what I have in my car: proper fuel injectors that inject gas into the cylinders. About a 10% drop in economy and power compared to petrol. Fourth gen systems inject LPG as a liquid directly into the cylinders. You actually get more power and fuel economy very much like on petrol.

Fourth gen systems have been available for a few years now, but car manufacturers have been very slow to introduce them to their vehicles. So far it has been the domain or third party installers, and the LPi kits have been very expensive.

      • Fuel excise is being slowly added to LPG from this year, at the rate of 2.5c per year for 5 years. Even in 2017 the excise will be 12.5c/L, compared to 38c/L on petrol. LPG will continue to be much cheaper and the better choice for Australia's energy security.

  • If it hasn't already been posted, Woolies has of course followed suit :p
