  • How easy/difficult is it to install this at home? (Replacing existing downlights)

    • +2

You can pull out your old downlight fitting and keep pulling until the end of the cable to see if there is a Roof socket / Surface socket

      https://www.lectory.com.au/assets/full/USS1000.jpg?201810031…

As long as there is a surface socket in the roof then you can replace it yourself, if the light fitting is wired directly on AC circuit then you need to call in a sparky to do it.

      • Thanks Rep
I will have a look when I get home

        • +1

Sure, please make sure to turn off the light switch before touching the downlight fitting.

I will buy some if the connector like that

      • Unfortunately, this downlight does not come with a DC 12v cable plug.

      • Mine was like that direct from the downlight, but the other end went to a driver and then to a proper socket.
So was a simple switch for my downlights

  • What is your suggestion if I already have led downlights throughout (on plug in sockets) but want to change to smart lights? Some ZigBee smart switches?

    • +2

The best option is to go with Philips Hue Garnea if you are not on a budget.

Or a combination of 12W RGBW Zigbee Smart Downlight for some highlighting areas

and Nue Zigbee Switches + normal downlights in other rooms.

The normal downlight + smart switch is a cheaper upgrade solution than swapping all the downlights to smart ones.

      • Thanks. Wish all the switches weren't so ugly.

And unfortunately none of those options are really budget friendly.

Best is to grab the inline switches. Why is there a seperate one for switch or dimmer? If I get the dimmer one can it turn the light on and off?

  • Hi rep, I bought few light previously and one of them died. I created a support request but still haven't received any reply from you. Would you be able to facilitate please?

    Dispute number 49New

    • Thanks for letting us know, I will forward the ticket to the warehouse and ask them to ship you the replacement downlight ASAP.
Please contact us 02 8386 0784 if you do not receive an email with tracking update by lunchtime tomorrow.

      • Thank you!
Considering the cost of shipping (and the fact that I bought the spares) i might be easier for them just to refund a cost of one item.

  • Any advice on flickering lights? Contactor who worked for the builder advised that there isn't enough load on the dimmer (eg. only two lights). Ideal E;ectrical suggested different lights that have the same problem - I'm leading to the dimmer but dont want to get someone out if it can't be fixed.

What's the light brand? The older gen lights may have issues with any dimmer (flicker on low dimm), the new dimmers do deal better with LED lights, few years back had a nightmare getting dimmers to match. If they flicker from the getgo (anything but on full/no dim) then they're not dimmable. Cheap or crap dimmers will be problematic generally speaking (ie deta dimmers) - I mainly use diginet blue dimmers now and havent experienced any issues in a year or two using them with mainly wholesaler led downlight brands (robus, voltex, pierlite etc). This style of led onj sale IMO is an older gen, the drivers will generally fail, the supplier won't keep any stock for failures and will be a pain in the ass (see earlier post). We generally use a fully enclosed unit these days (not a separate driver) .. your better off getting a generic unit more like the Arlec 9w tricolouor switchable @ bunning moving forward, even a elec wholesaler will do you a decent deal (we pay around 10-12 for a 9w led d/l 'wholesale') bunnings will be easier with warranty claims, they don't care if they have to issue a refund or replace with similar, unlike a smaller privately run op.

note jj212: you can get a load correcion device if you still experience issues but they're also not cheap then need to be installed… my guess is you have crap downlights, dimmers, or both.

  • Hi Rep, Can you please suggest some downlights 12-13w, 5-6000k for a new house being built, need about 45 downlights but i am on a strict budget between $20-25 per light and would be bonus if compatible with philips hue hub.

    • Go to a wholesaler, get a switchable kelvin d/l, it'll come with a real warranty (rare that it's needed, that's why we use them in the trade) and will be less than what your willing to pay per light (see above post). Or go the other route, get $6 jobbies from ebay, I've used them too and they can be okay too, just keep some aside for a potential failure!, that vs $25 a light, you'll be miles ahead…

edit: sorry, missed the hue bit, doubt you'd find much compatible with hue at that price, interested to see if so!

    • Definitely get the switchable colour lights (warm, cool or daylight) I think you'll be surprised that you actually want cool (4000k) and not 5 to 6000k.

The daylight setting is very stark.

      • Completely agree getting switchable warmth, makes the world of difference when you realise how bright they are when they're in the ceiling and can tone it down.

  • These are half price at Beacon..

GE Champ 10W 780 lumen brushed chrome dimmable IP44 rated downlight in warm white

    https://www.beaconlighting.com.au/ge-champ-780-lumen-brushed…

    • Most people wouldn't want either of those things (Chrome or warm white)

      • +1

        For the 1%s then

  • I always thought downlights were all the same, didn't even realise some were expensive!

  • Hi Rep,
ordered 10, paid by paypal, free shipping but when I paid the only option on your form was warehouse pick up, if I added auspost it added shipping charge so left it at warehouse pick up, but I don't want that, order no. is N1016741
