Recommendations for Mobile Plan for Daughter Starting High School

Hi All,

As per the title can anyone recommend a phone plan for my daughter who is getting her first mobile for Xmas this year (if Santa thinks she's been well behaved!).

I don't want to spend too much so I'm leaning towards the Amaysim $10 per month 1GB plan. I guess she won't need more data than that as she'll mostly use it at home on wi-fi, the phone will be used outside probably only on the weekends if she goes out with friends or if she needs to call us from school, or on the way to and from school, etc.

I also don't want a plan that's going to start charging me a fortune should she use all her data in under 28 days.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have been very happy with OVO - now $9.95 pm, $500 worth of calls, unlimited texts and 2 g data.

I've got my parents on jeenee for 1.2gb for $8.91 a month. Personally, I'm on catch for $170 for 200gb for the year.

I recommend monitoring her usage for the first couple months as you may need to upgrade the plan or select a provider that can avoid bill shock and provides cheap data upgrades.

    • $8.91 a month - how can I argue with that!?

I've seen others where you sign up for 200gb for a year, I'm worried that she'll accidentally use up all that data in the first month by using youtube outside or something.

    • Thanks, this catch plan looks great plus I'm already with Optus so shouldn't notice any coverage difference..

  • Don't bother with calls. My daughter usually uses about 60 seconds a month of voice…

    • Really? I know she'll be texting more but I thought kids would still call each other a lot? She does speak to friends on the phone now, usually, her friends call my wife's phone or through an app on her iPod.

      • Yeah Facetime or snapchat etc - all using data

        • Ah yes that would be it, am I really that out of touch? I'm not that old!

Make sure your enrol the device with her icloud account to your family. That way you can enforce screentime on it - or just monitor usage if you want a lighter touch.

        • Hmm I'm an android user. So are you saying that through icloud you can control what times she can use her devices? That would be awesome because every night I tell my kids to turn off their devices at 8pm so if I could get that automated that would save me the hassle of telling them a billion times and them saying "we didn't hear you!"

Why not the Boost 12 month, $150 plan for ~$135? 80GB to use over 12 months, telstra network so coverage shouldn't be an issue. Works out to $11.25/month

    • I'm worried that she'll forget to turn mobile data off and use all the data in a couple of days lol It will be easy to say to her that she has to wait until next month to top up the data but if I have to tell her to wait until next year then she will definitely not be happy!

      • Can set limits through most new phones, get it to turn data off when it hits the limit

Plus, you can then use it as a teaching tool to moderate herself

          teaching tool to moderate herself

Ha! she definitely needs to be taught that!

I second this. Plus she will get telstra coverage through boost.

She just needs to know how to make the most of WiFi, securely.

My younger daughter is starting high school next year. For now I've just signed her up on 6x 28 days Amaysim for $6.97, which should give me more time finding a suitable plan, and train her to stay under 1GB / 4 weeks.

    • Good idea, it's a shame that the code SIM30 seems to have expired.

        • Wow this is a good deal, the only problem I have is that you have to redeem the voucher by 30/11 which isn't good when Xmas isn't until 25/12!

Edit just read you need to activate by 09/12 which is a bit better.

  • Thanks for all of the responses, you guys are awesome!

  • Show her and your partner's plans and ask her to look for what she likes? A life lesson for her.

  • thumbs up for amaysim. they recently have added an extra 1gb. so it's $10 month for 2gb. Good Deal !!

  • CatchConnect $15, 90 days, 54GB in total. Or Kogan mobile, $15, 90 days, 60GB. Keep switching every 3 months, and u’ve got huge amount of data @ low cost ($60/yr). Not even count the cashback as they regularly have one for Catch ($12), so net cost can be only $3/3 months.

  • I have both my kids on the Jeenee $22 per month plan which gives 15GB of data and unlimited calls. Most high school kids will hate you for giving only 2GB or so which doesn't go far these days. I survived on 1.5GB for several years but use more like 8-10GB a month now just browsing on the train, occasional streaming of youtube etc.

I know you can save with some of the longer term offers but I can't be bothered with the admin/switching involved for what is not a massive saving.

  • Most of my family are on the $10 per month Belong plan.

1GB of data per month that rolls over if not used, if used then data is still available but at dial up speeds.
You can 'gift' data between users.
    Unlimited calls and text.

Best to find the $40 sim card on special for $15 and activate it for 40gb of data per month and then change it to the 1GB per month so you can bank that extra data.

    (2) Don't sign on 4th, 12th, 20th, 28th as that is the billing start date, so if you sign on before i.e. 3rd, 11th, 19th, 27th etc you will get a bonus 1 GB of data.
