Replacement Passport - Do They Cut The Barcode out of The Old One?

Only got couple of pages left in my passport and thinking to do the replacement at $178 as it still has 6 years left on it.

Do they cut the bar code out of the old PP when re applying voiding it and do they change the passport number? Being a replacement I'm hoping not, so it can fill up.

Renewed mine at the post office and they cut about 20mm off the front cover and first page. Number stayed the same.

YEah pretty sure they will cut front page before getting new one. So you won't be able to have 2 at same time as to fill first one up completely.

lol did OP really think any government would happily allow a citizen to hold two passports?

      • The US government can give their citizens a second passport, for example if traveling to Israel and then on to a Muslim country that would deny entry because of that. You use a different passport for each country.

        Or you know.. dual citizens..

        • You’d find Australia would have a similar policy.

        • Fair point, I thought it goes without saying that I was referring to OP's position specifically.

      • Yep, you can hold an official (diplomatic) and private passports.

I travel a lot, and usually do urgent renewals when I run low on pages.

It's an NZ passport, I do it when I'm in Australia for a week or more at a time.
The new passport has a new number and expiration date. They also send a sticker to stick onto the cover of the old one, and say to cut a corner off cover too.

Generally go through this process every 2 years or so.

  • When I got mine renewed they gave me a new number and cut the front page like the first page mentioned but deffo changed my number from a M43*** to a PA45****

    • I stand corrected, definitely a new number.

  • you can have a second passport if you can show valid reason (like the example given above re israel etc)

    Concurrent passports

In cases of demonstrated need you can apply for a concurrent passport – a second passport of the same kind as your first – to facilitate international travel. Approval is generally limited to cases where significant travel delays could be caused by waiting for visa(s) to be issued or when a destination country will not accept a passport showing evidence of travel to another country.

Concurrent passports are issued for a maximum of three years. The normal application fee applies.

  • I know renewed changes the PP number

The operative word is "Replacement" that's why they're $104 cheaper

    Replacement passport
A replacement passport is a reprint of an existing passport with a new passport number, applicable under limited circumstances.

The expiry date will normally be the same as the passport being replaced.

The existing passport must have at least two years validity remaining in order for a replacement passport to be issued.

Just rang they said it's the same deal as renewing. Saying that if I called back the Gov again it could be a different operator with a different answer.

      10 year passport is $282, $28.20 a year.
6 year passport in your case of a replacement is $178, $29.67 a year.

Unless you plan to live for more than 6 and less than 10 years, then you will save by getting a completely new passport of 10 year validity.

      • It took 4 years to fill the passport up so in another 4 years it fills up then I'll renew the passport.
Current passports cost me $70.50 per year @ 4 years
        replacement $44.50 P.A @ 4 years

    • Saying that if I called back the Gov again it could be a different operator with a different answer.

… yeah never know. Could be new govt with new PM and new cabinet too at this rate.

  • Slightly different issue, but when my water damaged passport was replaced I had to submit it and they simply discarded my passport! They asked if I want to keep it at the time, to which I obviously replied yes, but then someone told me later on that damaged passports can't be kept? It was the only physical souvenir I kept over years of travel.
