Melbourne / Brisbane to New York $1273 Return on United Airlines (Dec 23 - Jan 8)

470

Leaving aside opinions about United as a carrier, amazing prices for a round-trip ticket to New York. Link to google flights

Cheapest was AUD 1273 departing Dec 23 and returning Jan 8. There are some more options departing on Dec 20 or earlier. For example, departing Dec 20 and returning Jan 8 is AUD 1530

Edit: Deal might be dead - can't seem to find any fares from MEL.

  • Need to make price clearer in post.

    • Don't worry, has been done

    • Is it not pretty clear? How could it be clearer?

      • It’s missing the $ sign which makes ozbargain auto highlight the price. I put in a report to fix it.

    • has world gone mad ? Has WW3 started & no one outside of USA told us ? This is peak season, when normally you'd be paying twice those numbers. Haven't seen it this low since GFC at end of 2007 I think it was.

Had a look at Sydney to Denver return as friends just got 7 seats (2 were kids) for $7400 departing December 28, coming home January 14 with really good connections. Not sure where they change planes, whether at LA, San Francisco or Houston.

      • Hahahhaaha I agree - that's sums up how I felt when I saw the fares. These flights have been about $2300 for the last month or so that I have been tracking prices!

    • +1

hold on United don't fly out of Brisbane

    • the United crazy fares where an error. Fares removed today.

  • thats seems to be US $ not AU

  • +1

All prices are AUD - I had set that appropriately in the title.

add amex offer and get 200 off

    • Ahh yes. Good call.

    • +1

      Link to offer pls?

  • Seeing $1279 from Bris to NY return same dates

  • Fantastic price, especially for those dates. Very tempted.

    • Yeah to get to NY for a white xmas would be good

    • Agree. VERY good prices for peak season. We flew with United around that time last year (depart 20Dec17, return 7Jan18) and found the service pretty hard to fault…except for a couple of grumpy staff on the SFO—>EWR leg.

Oh yeah - United fly into Newark. Great airport IMHO.

I'm actually considering this, it would be amazing to be in New York at this time of the year. I'm guessing accommodation prices would be insane though.

    • +2

Accom prices jump heavily July/Aug for peak summer.

Jan is a crazy cheap time to go to nyc. Most hotels $100 and below. Downside is the snow, can be slow moving around the city mid blizzard.

NYC in 30-40 degree heat fairly unpleasant though. Stunning sunsets though.

Don’t forget cash rewards and CheapTickets 16% off hotel code!

      • "Jan is a crazy cheap time to go to nyc…"

AFTER New Year's Eve, of course. The week before Christmas through to 2 January is breathtakingly expensive.

    • +1

Don't stay in Manhattan and accomodation costs plummet. Stay near Woodside and you can still get to Manhattan within 15 minutes via subway.

      • +2

Or be ballsy and stay in Harlem

      • I usually stay in Long Island City.

  • The main problem was that for a while they had really old planes but I think they’re new now. Also people weren’t used to the US airline style of hospitality (or can lack thereof).
I traveled with them in business class in the old aircraft and it was a far better experience than Qantas.

    • Some people get all the luxury :(

    • +1

      Yes new 787.

The killer is its a 9 across 787. Virgins 9 across 777 is heaven compared.

      • +1

My best ever economy experience was with BA (who are generally considered similar to Qantas in terms of poor service). It was a 9-across 777 and because the flight attendants were on strike there were office staff serving drinks, they were super friendly and continually handing out copious amounts of alcohol.

    • +1

They have been using their Dreamliner for at least 2 years for SYD/MEL-LAX/SFO leg so that is great. However, the 2nd transcontinental leg between their west to east coast is with their older 757. FYI, United's main hub for the Tri-state area is Newark airport so that is around 50 mins of train to downtown NYC Penn Station.

Combine with current AMEX deal !

  • Do they still break guitars?

  • Absolute bargain!

  • amex deal makes it $1073 which is really good!

  • It's $1249 from SYD with the supplied dates, so even better.. https://www.google.com/flights/#flt=SYD./m/02_286.2018-12-23…

  • I flew on UA SYD - SF - NY return 3 years ago.

The customer service on the flights was sh!t house, I had one of the hosts yell at me to ask if I wanted milk in my coffee! haha

Plus they kick people off their flights LOL

I would pay another 100-200 to fly with Qantas or AA

  • +1

Damn that’s cheap!!!! Especially for that time period

  • Even cheaper if you leave 24/12 - $1223

Leaving aside opinions about United as a carrier

OP has surely never flown United…

  • -3

Wait a sec, United Airline? Do you really want to risk being beaten up?

    • Good point though.

At these prices the flights may be overbooked and eventually people will be kicked off to make space for their employees
However I'd take the risk as these prices is literally half of what nonstop flights w/ Qantas would be.

      • I visited the USA last year and every flight I caught had a wait list of at least six people, and it was very common to hear staff ask for volunteers to give up their seats over the PA. Very different experience to flying in Asia/Europe/here.

Just remember that if you take their offer of a $500 voucher it's just a voucher and not cash, and can only be used on one flight.

United back from LAX to Sydney on a 787 was perfectly fine. Can't complain about the service.

    • +1

I’ll take the beating for the multi million dollar payout.

  • +1

LAX from Melbourne is $1073. Combined with AMEX and that is $873.

  • Well, this is tempting. I might be able to visit an old friend in NYC and stay at their place. Thanks for sharing :)

United airlines is so bad. I hate them

  • Qantas has a good deal now
Edit: for the US summer so different dates to this.

We are delaying going to the US until after Trump is impeached.
Can't give my money to a country that has such a fool as a President.

That's ok, plenty of nice places to visit around the world. USA can wait.

    • -1

      Wow.

    • Trump is a legend. Media hates him, cos he bypasses them. Best US pres ever !!!! Stop believing the fake news put out by media. Who cares about medias opinions anyway.

    • think Trump will win the next election & maybe a 3rd (he's doing such a good job, they 2 term limit will be disposed of)

  • Amazing deal. Been looking at these exact dates. Saved me over $2000 OP :)

If anyone wants to book this and get the AmEx credit offer, hmu and I'll be happy to do it for free :)

  • Ahh!! I recently bought a multi city flight to USA for about $2200 via Qantas. I’ve just checked, and the same multi city flights are $1357 with United Airlines. Do I purchase the United flights and cancel Qantas ($400 cancellation fee…) what should I do!?

    • If you are going the cancel route, I would first purchase on United and then cancel. You get 24 hours free cancellation on United. Otherwise, you might cancel Qantas tickets, and the United flight prices might have gone up in the mean time

      • No you only get 24 hours free cancellation with a United ticket departing from USA, not from Australia.

        • Not sure about that that: United 24 hour policy

Plus, when I booked my ticket on United.com, I got the banner saying 24-hour free cancellation.

        • @smokeymr: definitely doesn't apply outside of USA at least if booked through an agent or online agent

Anyone who wants to book this, happy to offer you the full $200 cashback. Feel free to PM me.
