FREE to Watch: Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places (3 Part Documentary) @ CuriosityStream

1780

In September 2016, noted physicist Stephen Hawking partnered with production company Bigger Bang to produce an original documentary series for CuriosityStream called Stephen Hawking’s Favorite Places. When the show debuted, viewers had to sign up for a paid subscription in order to watch the show. But as a tribute to Hawking following his passing earlier this week, CuriosityStream has made the entire series free to watch for a limited time (credit bgr.com).

“At CuriosityStream, we will always be grateful that Professor Hawking passionately shared his enthusiasm for the wonders of the Universe with his fellow humans,” says the team on its website. “In tribute, please enjoy the complete series of Stephen Hawking’s Favorite Places through Friday, March 23rd.”

Enjoy :)

Cmon guys, there are other deals out there for you to comment on!

      • +6

You disgust me. That man did more in one lifetime than than entire world full of you would ever achieve.

        • +2

Clearly you guys don't know him very well! He embraced his disability and his uniqueness. Before everything had to be PC pun intended, he was doing standup like this

        • LOL, I'm pretty sure mirrors would disgust me more if I were you.

    • Leave guy alone. He couldn't even stand up for himself.

  • +23

Thumbs up just for Stephen Hawking!

    • I’m a Steady State guy. Big Bang is an illusion!

    • +4

      Too soon, have some respect.

      • +3

How long is long enough? I believe in having respect for people and their relatives ect but this is a public forum… It's not disrespectful to disagree with his theory's, infact I'm sure Steve would be anoyed with people shouting others down for it as it's a big part of what he did…

That said he gave no real reason and it's not an appropriate place to post it.

      • +2

nothing is ever too soon to joke about. ever. it's either okay to joke about everything or nothing. someone is going to be offended by something at any point in time anyway, so have at it

    • +9

Which doesn't mean his theories are wrong, just untestable at this point in time. As technology evolves, they may become testable just as ways are still being found to test Einstein's theories. Regardless, not a bad effort for a guy facing such a debilitating illness.

      • +2

Agree, some theories have taken decades for technology to catch up to make it observable for us, most recent being the Higgs boson.

Who knows Hawking might receive a nobel prize in the future once we can observe Hawkings radiation, his most significant contribution to science rather than the much talked about Big Bang in which he had promoted heavily.

        • +1

Sadly not, Nobel prizes are not awarded posthumously (unless the recipient dies between announcement and ceremony).

        • @GordonR: Oh ok

        • Well aren't you just a walking talking Stephen hawking

    • +1

Gotta love the comments that don't back up their statements

    • +3

Take what God says with a grain of salt…..the bible is completely untestable and a lot of made up bullshit goes into what's in it.

      FTFY

      • +1

What makes you think this was his angle? Some religious phobia of yours?

        • Being scared of the power of population control is a worthwhile phobia

        • -1

          @Putnum: That's why I'm phobic of socialism/communism.

        • -1

@rokufan: But capitalism/facism is your friend.

        • -1

@artfuldodger: Capitalism has moved more people out of poverty into the middle class than any system in history. Capitalism (free market) is not fascism - unless you are a communist where everything non-communist is fascist.

        • @rokufan: Capitalism doesn't move people out of poverty. Under capitalism, the increasing concentration of capital naturally impoverishes the working classes. The key is redistribution of the privatised profit, that is, a welfare state. Without that, the progression towards a Dickensian outcome ensues. Throw out the phobic obsession with an ideology and delve into the dry reality of Political Economy.

        • -1

@artfuldodger: That is a marxism 101 critique of capitalism, hardly ideologically neutral or a reflection of dry reality. Ironically, nothing concentrates power and wealth more into the hands of the elite than socialism/communism. The fact you mentioned private profits and redistribution of them is an acknowledgement of capitalism's ability to create wealth. Doling out welfare checks is not moving anybody into the middle class, welfare is suppose to be a safety net only. A largely free economy allows the talented and hard working the best opportunity for success. Since 1990 over a billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty thanks to the free market - not socialism or large scale redistribution. Research the issue if you're interested, and perhaps take your own advice and let go of ideology and be open to the facts and evidence just like I presume you do with your interest in science ;).

        • @rokufan: One logical fallacy after another which suggests much time wasting to come so I'll bow out. Though a funny forum to raise these things, I feel ol' Hawking would approve. His respect lay for a society which valued humility and kindness.

        • @artfuldodger: Allegation of logical fallacies without specifying or addressing - that's weak, it's indicative of a lack of counter-argument, you finished off with an emotional appeal (logical fallacy yourself).

Actually, I only brought it up in regards to Putnum's comment. He had a swipe at religion, which he is free to do, but I can't let it go without mentioning the big secular religion of the left. You jumped on the comment, it obviously bothered you.

Socialism/communism is the opposite of "humility and kindness" - centralised power (arrogance) and let's not forget the millions of dead bodies (evil).

      • Clearly you haven't studied it. These are heaps of podcasts available that test it and it holds up.

I love the Hawkings stalls in Singapore

    • I'm taking your comment with a grain of salt.

Stephen Hawking was a unique guy with great courage, determination and intelligence. Not someone to be shot down, especially at this time.

    • -1

All kudos to him, but IMO he was grossly overrated as a presenter to the general public. I found "A Brief History Of Time" excruciatingly boring - I read it just to tick it off as done. When compared to other physics presenters (Brian Greene comes to mind immediately as currently one of the best) I don't know what the fuss was all about.

      • +1

        Brian Greene

        yawn… Brian Cox is better…

But NOBODY will ever come close to Carl Sagan !!!

      • +6

grossly overrated as a presenter to the general public

So what? That was hardly his area of expertise.

      • +1

On "public presenter", I think that the Oz guy Nick Vujicic is much better. But Stephen Hawking is not famous for his presentation, is he?

      • +1

If you are talking presenters you can not go past the great Eric Cartman https://youtu.be/vsrc7lekzM0

    • Leave the personal opinions out of the comment section.

      • -1

Look above, tons of personal opinions

          You're not Cool Uber…

        • +1

@jv: Paying less than minimum wage is cool if you have an app.

  • +4

If you really want to learn something, and have fun, watch The Feynman Lectures.
Or at least, some of his talks and interviews on youtube.

  • I’d recommend reading his book ABHoT.
    Or watch the video.
It’s turtles all the way down…

  • +5

You can also download Stephen Hawking's PhD thesis, Properties of expanding universes from University of Cambridge.

    • +1

Why? You're not going to understand it …

  • Thanks very much TA!

How don't these guys support Chromecast yet?

    • Ridiculous

      • Does anyone know what is required to include this support? I was under the impression that the browser defaulted this feature to all videos but this makes me think I am mistaken

  • I wonder if Jeff Epstein's private island is featured.

  • been there done that bought the t-shirt next

Watched all 3. I wish I could have watched at double speed as on Youtube but perhaps being slowed down once in a while isn't a terrible thing. Lots of filler in these and slow paced but they're not bad for introducing concepts.

What's disappointing is coming here and reading what amounts to a pi**ing contest about which scientist is best. That's ridiculous. This isn't about whose sports team is best. It should be about the science, not which cult of personality. Each of the scientists mentioned - Hawking, Cox, Greene, Feynman, Sagan. All were working scientists who actually contributed to advancing our knowledge to different degrees. They were also all flawed human beings. Best way to remember them is to read about the science.

Others have already linked to the Feyman Lectures and some of Hawking's work. Feynman's popular books are much more accessible by the way - This will give a feel for whether or not you might enjoy those: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x24gwgc

    For the others

Brian Greene - Learn at any level you like - even uni level for free at his - http://www.worldscienceu.com/
I can recommend the master classes and the uni level course on Relativity if you have the math background. (Highschool Math is enough if you didn't do the lowest level).

Brian Cox works on the Large Hadron Collider. His popular TV shows is probably what he will be remembered for in the long run since the LHC tends to lend itself to large collaborative work often with a lot of people's names attached to each paper. Also how many physicists were also minor rock stars?

Sagan - Of course watching the original Cosmos is the way to best experience his contribution. He did a lot of other things though including work on the art on gold plates that are attached to the Voyager probes.

what amounts to a pi**ing contest

Yes, sorry about that. It seems my comment started a lot of this; it was never my intention. I should have said what I said without any comparisons.

      • +1

It's all good mate. Things go viral in a much bigger way all the time.

  • +10

I'm glad of this post, will watch before the 23rd. I'm not glad I read the comments. Assholery everywhere.

    • +3

I ONLY read the comments! Thanks everyone for a good laugh.

  • +2

Thank you. I enjoyed it and feel no compulsion to criticise Hawking or anyone else. I could not have done what he did with his life.

  • +2

What amazing person! Thanks TA, will try and watch this.

  • This bloke asks a spirit if Stephen Hawking the atheist has crossed over! 😀 https://youtu.be/ot9AlS3J3vA

    • You heard it loud and clear. Stephen Hawking is being blown in heaven right now.

      sigh

If Hawking was still alive, he would call this guy a dumbass and a fraud.

      • Yes debunked even though this bloke huff is selling hand made magic boxes for $4000. I’d love it if he posted a deal for the Ozbargainers and see the reaction.
        Here’s the debunking
        https://youtu.be/Hw1JOZWWC6M

      • Stephen Hawking is being blown in heaven right now.

        Is the video nsfw?

        • Discussing religion and hocus pocus is never safe at work. But there is no XXX content. The fraudster was saying Stephen Hawking's mind was being blown because he now knows there is a heaven. He said it…poorly.
