waiting for the mi note 2 to drop in price….

The Mi Mix 2 has band 28, the original one does not. We all know how much band 28 is loved on this site.

    • +1

And a much better processor and camera too!

Sadly I need band 28. I live in Canberra and travel a wee bit.I get virtually no service in Yass or parts of Goulburn. My partner has band 28 and has no issues.

      • As a Canberran, this info comes in handy.
I don't think I have band 28 (redmi note 2) but I haven't had issues since I don't venture out. But now I know where I'd have issues. Thanks!

There is a Mi Note 2 Global model with band 28. Similar internals to original Mix, but form factor similar to Samsung note 7 (but less explodey)

  • a bit late for this deal…

    • Not the top one Android phone, still the top ten.

      • Which is the best? Samsung S8 Plus?

          Xiaomi Mix2

The Mix 2 has no audio jack….why Xiaomi why?

    • The stupidest move even though they know people buy their Cheeaomee handsfrees and love it.

        • +3

Bluetooth 2.4Ghz interference sucks. Simple. Try walking around the CBD and not have interference or break up in your music.

        • +14

The pros outweigh the cons I feel

No one cares what you feel. We want a 3.5mm jack.

        • +2

especially if the cons include having to make your phone thicker to accommodate the jack

The Mi Mix Original is 7.9 mm compared to 7.7 mm on the Mix 2. Very small increase in thickness.

        • -5

@daveaus: Yea.. it still thicker though? And don't forget the phone is physically smaller so they've done alright cramming everything into a smaller space than the original and also making it slimmer.

@bchliu: Mi Mix 2 supports BT5 which is meant to reduce interference issues…. What version of BT are you referring to with regards interference walking around CBD?

          @KLoNe: You've hurt my feelings! :P

        • @Deviner: The phone has a smaller battery and screen which would explain why its smaller.

I would certainly buy the Mix 2 if it was priced the same as the original Mix. Currently the cheapest Mix 2 on Aliexpress is $872 for the 6 gig / 64 gig version.

"Nowadays, Bluetooth ear/headphones are much more common…"
much more common than wired headphones - I don't think so. Or do you mean just more common than wireless ones a year ago?

Whats the real cons ? Thickness is not a problem, as its only a 3.5 connector not 6.25, a 6-7MM thick phones can easily have a 3.5mm connector. My old Sony was 6.9mm and had no problems with strength around the connector. newer models the connector is waterproof. And the connector does not need to be removed to make room for anything - tear downs of an iphone proved this.

You can still have the Bluetooth headphone with phones that have the 3.5 doesn't mean that function is disabled, and some prefer the much higher quality of the audio DACs in some phones when using wired headphone.

BT5 reduces interference, but doesn't eliminate it.

sometimes I think things are done just to make a big deal about a change for advertising, not for any real reason.

but me, I dont use either.

BT4.x and below. Its not the tech. Its that almost everything wireless is on 2.4Ghz band and is absolutely saturated in busy areas. It does not matter if you are using Bose, Plantronics, Sony or the device Samsung, Sony, Apple etc. All are susceptible to this. General laws of wavelength physics. This is exactly the reason why WIFI was moved to 5Ghz bands along with some other household wireless (eg. newer cordless phones).

BTW. Just because Apple has done something, doesnt mean that others should take up to it or that it is any good / trend setting. Sure, a handful of companies may warm to something but market is finicky and demands their own. Look at the debacle where Samsung tried to stop MicroUSB cards got such a backlash from their customers, they were forced to put it back in the next generation.

@PVA: "much more common than wired headphones - I don't think so. Or do you mean just more common than wireless ones a year ago?" - I said they're more common, not more common than wired… just more common than they were 6 months ago when the first companies started removing the audio jack and people started freaking out.

I would've expected people to learn since then that it's not quite as big a deal as they've made it out to be.

Between BT and USB-C carrying audio, there is no need for an audio jack.

@bchliu: I didn't say anything about Apple being great or trend setters at all, far from it.
There's been heaps of companies doing this same thing, I just mentioned Apple as they're the most popular.

3.5mm jacks are old analog technology and take up premium real estate on a phone nowadays and are being correctly phased out as technology has moved on.

In about 12-18 months time, this won't even be a debate.

  • Anyone who already have one of these able to recommend screen protectors / ROMS?

    • Regarding ROMs, your biggest hurdle is getting the bootloader unlocked. It is not as easy as connecting your device to your computer and punching in a few lines in Command Prompt. Once you can get past that, you'd find myriads of custom MIUI-based and LineageOS-based ROMs on XDA.

      • Thanks, I just been reading up on that. I currently have a Redmi Note 3 so am familiar with the unlock process.

Just to confirm, I unlock boot loader, install TWRP, backup, then install custom ROM and magisk? Any gotchas to be aware of?

        • Yes, yes, maybe, yes and maybe. I typically don't back up stock ROMs (because I like to live dangerously). I can do without root so I tend to skip Magisk.

On a related note, which do you prefer, MIUI or LineageOS?

        • @albert0pia: I really dislike miui. Stock android all the way… For the redmi note 3 RR seems to be the best.

        • @daveaus: For me, it's a love-hate thing. Some features of MIUI are not present in AOSP, although custom ROMs are constantly closing that gap. What I hate the most about MIUI is the notification shade.

      • your biggest hurdle is getting the bootloader unlocked

Is it any different from getting the bootloader unlocked for the Mi Note series?
I have done a few of those without many issues.

        • Not at all. I just think it is too much hassle having to request an unlock for a device you have bought. I mean it's not like I'm leasing it.
There's another way to install TWRP even with a locked bootloader but it is not for the faint of heart.

    • you can get glass screen protectors from Ebay, they will be fine.

Has anyone seen any "deals" for the Xiaomi smart mop ?

  • dammit. My original mix is still going strong. What can I do then?

    • +5

You can give it to me. Thanks in advance.

    • +1

Going stronger is more important. Leave other matters or weaker mix to me…

  • Mine was shipped a couple of days ago, I paid extra for DHL shipping but the tracking number doesn't work. Anyone have the same problem?

  • Got my phone today. They emailed me saying it was shipped on 13th of September but it didn't actually get picked up by DHL until 24th of September. Comes with MIUI Global which has the play store, also comes with the leather case.

Now I have to wait 72 hrs to get rid of MIUI :(.
