[NSW] No Gap Fee ($0) on Check-Ups, Teeth Cleaning, X-Rays and Fillings @ No Gaps Dental Sydney

1050

This is not really a new deal as such but more people should know about this. No Gaps Dental offers no out-of-pocket expenses with any Australian Health fund for common dental treatments including check-ups, teeth cleaning, x-rays and fillings too! As far as I know, this is the only dentist in Sydney that does no gaps fillings. They have more than 10 locations in Sydney.

If you currently don't have a dental extras cover and need a filling that's not urgent, it is worth taking out one of the standard extras covers, most of which have a 2 month waiting period. For example, HCF Bronze Extras starts from $15.35 (excluding Australian Government Rebate) a month ($350 annual dental limit) or, if you want a higher annual limit, consider GMHBA Bronze Extras Set Benefits for $24.25 a month ($1000 annual dental limit).

If you need one urgently, Ahm lifestyle extras coverfor $66.05 a month ($500 annual dental limit) currently offers no waiting period on routine dental, including fillings. Alternatively, many funds offer no waiting period when you take out both extras and hospital cover.

I myself had a couple of fillings and an xray (edit: at my request) done at No Gaps Dental recently and was very satisfied with the experience. The practice was well equipped and the dentist was friendly and professional. The billing was fairly easy too, just make sure to bring your insurance card and make sure that you haven't reached your annual limits. After everything was done, my bill was about $800. They swiped my insurance card and the dental cover paid over $250 and the rest was waived under their no gaps guarantee.

Judging by the annual dental fee survey the exact same treatment would have cost in over $450 at the "cheapest dental practice", meaning that I would have to pay over $200 gap payment. And I would have to find that "cheapest dental practice" somehow. If we go by the average prices from the same survey, the total would have been over $600 and my gap payment would have been more than $350. Needless to say I am quite happy I did not have to pay that.

Hope this helps someone.

Edit: there seems to be a similar no gaps fillings included dentist in Melbourne, but I have no experience with them: http://www.dentalguard.com.au/

          • @Hogg: Because Medicare pays for it. You're trading convenience and time for savings.
As far as I can tell from the MBS with a bulk bill incentive an OPG costs the tax payer $50.54 at bulk billed radiology places.

        • @zenx: Cheers! Might book an appointment myself :D

        • @Hogg: in my case the health fund covered under $40 which is approximately what other dental practices charge for an xray. I am guessing they have a high list price as many dental covers pay back a set percentage of the price.

        • @zenx:

Protip: Code 037 is for a jaw x-ray. Not the standard small ones which are around $40. The jaw x-rays can be done through medicare with a referral form so that it doesn't eat into your insurance limit.

        • +1

@Hogg: that is correct, I had a whole jaw done to see the wisdoms.. I guess those are more expensive and medicare would indeed make sense then.

I Know someone that used to work at no gaps. And what Money Maker Mike said was true. Also the worst thing is, when it is really busy at their practice they do not sterilize and clean their instruments properly. Imagine a dentist using a drill and bur, that has been drilled into someone else's infected tooth..its disgusting.. and probably illegal.

    • -2

I legit made an account just to write this

      • +2

Hi Money Maker Mike aka nogap competitor

        • LOL im not a competitor and i dont even work in healthcare/dental industries, so dental stuff has nothing to do with me, and i wouldnt care.. by all means you can go there as much as you want :)

    • If true, this is horrible and you should fill a complaint at Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency Dental Board immediately. If not, sounds like badmouthing competition.

      • -1

unfortunately it is true, but she only worked at 3 of the practices, so they have other ones around syd that are prob fine.. and yeah ill tell her to file a complaint. It was awhile ago, so maybe they are better now. It was usually during really busy times - theyll be in a rush, and not clean properly so my advice would be to go when theyre more quiet.

  • From memory NIB isn't included anymore for no gaps dental.I used to go nearby at no gaps dental near my house but had to go further away to a nib dental centre because they wouldn't cover the gap anymore.

Happy to be proved wrong if it has changed recently

Speaking of dental services and health funds: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-04-04/health-insurers-accuse…

  • This could end up like the last dental deal that was posted previously.

  • So this would probably be a dick move but could you legit sign up for the AHM extras cover, get some dental work, and then cancel the policy?

  • Had four wisdom teeth surgically removed at the Beverly Hills branch. Bill before swiping card was $1500 per visit (two teeth removed each time), after $20!… Would recommend lol

    • +1

That's the price you would pay to do all 4 at a surgeon and asleep…

    • what's your dental cover plan?

  • +1

I have no gaps in my teeth, so does that mean all dental free?:)

  • +1

Watch out for unnecessary X-rays (unneeded radiation) and fillings that you don't actually need. Probably fine for a check up but be firm with these extras.

    • I go to Beverly Hills all the time and do not push for those at all. I have been using them for many years and highly recommend. Just last week they did one recurring cavity (unfortunately a cavity under a filling) and paid nothing with Saint Luke’s cover. Also did check up for all the family and again paid nothing. This cavity had been filled possibly 4-5 years ago by another dentist at no gaps. I am a night grinder and I have only been using night guard for the past year. It is possible that caused the original filling to crack and allow a new cavity underneath.

Depending on your cover you might be out of cover for other things. My daughter had two wisdom removed and we were out of pocket about $400 (can’t remember exact figure but wasn’t cheap).

      • Check if Beverly Hills has some sort of deal with your provider. For Bupa they charge more per item from your fund. This means you can exhaust more of your bucket of money and reach your limit faster. If any item isn’t covered then they expect you to pay the full amount. Eg. You get a clean, xray, consult etc. say these are all covered except consult which might be 80 and are happy to take the $20 Bupa pays. If you don’t have $80 spare in fund, they ask you to pay $80 in full and not $20. Something to watch out for. It is no gap if health fund isn’t exhausted, otherwise it’s a larger hit

Will never go back to nogap.
Went first time and filling fell out after 2 days. After fixing that again it held up for another week. Went to other dentist to fix it properly.
Came back a year later because they were close to my place. They put a filling on top of decay and it fell out in a couple of weeks. Also they failed to see decay on another tooth on x-ray. I found out about it when I received a follow up call couple of weeks later. Never wet back there.

    • Not saying this is why but fillings are hard to right.

  • Eagerly awaiting one for Brisbane!

  • At first glance I read 'No Fap Fee'

    oops

  • I also want to mention that ancillary or extras health cover is another can of worms. It's mostly putting in $1 to get 60 cents back. As a community that makes sure we squeeze every dollar buying boats with stenches and whatnot, I expect us to do the sums carefully for health insurance.

The only ones I see worth it are if you're lucky enough to be in the teacher's or railway/transport union health funds. Alternatively look for the not-for-profit health funds. Avoid the big health funds like the plague especially NIB!

Hey, which healthfund do you recommend?

What's your view on using GIC as a core for crowns? I've been seeing prosthodontists do that!

      • I'm of the view that if people are disciplined then paying the premium to their own high interest account, they'd be ahead.

If they really want to have extras cover then I would recommend them look into any not-for-profit funds.

There's a list of all funds on this government website. http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/insurer
        **
People can click on the funds and under Business Structure, it should tell you if it's not-for-profit.

        Are you a dentist too?

Regarding GIC cores. From what I understand, it's okay as long as there is enough tooth structure left where you're not relying on the core. Might want to ask the Pro people about it. They're the experts!

        • Thanks for the useful link!!

I'm a dentist on this forum. Yeah, I've been seeing dentists use Fuji IX in posteriors and they either crack or wear away so I was skeptical in using them as cores for crowns. The rationale from prosthodontists is that they mimic the dentin most. You're right in making sure there's enough ferrule but I feel much better in using resin although I haven't had enough experience to see failure of resin cores yet. I've heard dentists back in the old days using cavit as core! 0_o

        • @pizzadoh:

I think it needs more than just enough ferrule to use GIC. It would have to not be missing too many walls.

  • guys

whats the verdict on No GAPS DENTAL - are they worth going for?

  • Can I use this thread as recognition of prior learning should I apply to study dentistry in the future?

  • Are these guys ok for dental crown work and, if anyone has done it with them, how much do they charge? I need one done, have the required major dental cover but my dentist quoted $1,800. Looking for somewhere cheaper or I'm massively out of pocket.

  • Dentistry (Excluding cosmetic ) should be covered by Medicare…. Hard to live without teeth …

  • I have never heard of GMHBA. Is it a good insurer? Do their claims go through HICAPS terminal the same way as other insurers or have to claim after the fact separately?

  • I've been going to these guys for many years. They're ok. I get a different dentist every time, I go there once every half a year. The same dentists don't seem to work there for too long.

  • +2

Only use these guys for a check up if you have not been to the dentist in a while. If they want to do fillings then get a second opinion with a different dentist, they make their money buy putting in as many billable items as possible in your appointment. I made the mistake of using these guys when I was younger, the reality is a lot of the fillings (I suspect) were unnecessarily and have since compromised the tooth structure.

    Please get a second opinion.

I'm wary about using this type of thing now. Joined Bupa for the deal they had, used their dental as it was (mostly) free for what I had done. Unfortunately 2 things they did wrong….checked a crown/root canal I had, but said it was fine (after I asked specifically to check there were no issues as I had always had a tinge of pain there)…..there were signs of infection around the root in the scan which he never picked up (both my dentist and the specialist I had to see could easily see it)….in the end it worked it's way up to the gum line after a few months where I couldn't ignore it and I ended up having to get that tooth out….it still would have had to come out, but the extra months of infection lost some more bone and I am going to get an implant) Second, I had a cracked tooth on the other side (from years ago that had a filling….both cracked teeth from clenching day and night for quite a long time due to high stress family issues) He said it was leaking and it had to be redone…..fine, but he "chased" the crack and still couldn't get to a clear spot, so he has prob made this even worse, as the dentist from my normal clinic told me…….they should NEVER chase a crack….now I have no idea how long I have left on that one before that too would have to be removed, as prob not even worth getting a crown if the crack runs into the root now (same molar as the one I had out, but on the other side, both on the bottom) Not happy Jan, should have stuck with the dentists that actually know what they are doing and paid the out of pocket.

Bupa has 2x free no gap checks per year (must be 6 months apart), at their Members First dentists. Personally I would stick with that. It's not limited to NSW either.

  • Be careful as it’s only no gap when you have money in the fund. As example, They are happy to take $20 from an $80 charge as long as fund is paying. Otherwise if fund only has $70 left, the full amount is charged to you and not just the $20. It’s in their terms and conditions. However if you have unlimited dental, then not an issue. Note that Any 3 surface fillings or larger are now no longer gap free and more expensive then any other provider. You should be ok with simple stuff otherwise avoid. They make you sign a form at start stating you know non simple fillings will be charged with a gap.

  • I’m just going to put this out there, I’ve been going to NoGaps in Sydney City for the last 7 years, every 6 months and they have been amazing.
    - x rays every year to check my wisdom teeth
    - preventative filling completed
    - Never have to wait for my appointment
Just wonderful, my wife still goes to her family dentist and costs us a few hundred every time and she refuses to go to mine for free for the same thing

  • Anyone know if there's a Brisbane version of this?

  • Off topic here, but anyone know of a no gap dental cleaning in WA. With hbf

    • Haven't you been receiving the no gap offer at any hbf dental clinic emails from hbf?

  • Anyone know what the minimum Extras limits left available on your policy is before they won't treat?

I had $40 left and they wouldn't treat.

  • i only paid $99 for a filling with x ray included.

another dentist charge $150. you are getting ripped off if they are charging you $800

    • What are you talking about? Extra insurance only is not $800. It depends on different factors. For young people can be as low as 7 a week (which is about $364) and you get two dental check ups and other things like glasses, massage etc.

For my family I always paid between 800-1000 on extra but we get 6 dental check ups, massages, glasses etc. Now I have to have also hospital for tax purposes but I have always had extra since it saves me a lot.

      • $1000 is a waste, it is cheaper coming out of pocket for those.

you are only paying for yourself for checkups which is only $99

kids get free check ups twice a year, so that's free

        massages are $50

glasses are $199 for 2 pairs at specsavers with eye exam.

out of pocket that is $500, so you lose $500. where exactly is the savings?

        • 6 checks up even if they were $100 each? =$600
          Glasses at $750
Gym cashback (depends but I was get between 300 and 400 for me and husband).
Cashback for massage $30-40 so if you do even 5-6 that’s another $200
          600+750+300+200=1,850
Also major dental as we need to see a specialist. Free ambulance. I think it’s a no brainer. And also I don’t know if I would trust $99 dental check up’s. Where do they that? And what if you need a filling?
The $800-1000 is per family not per person btw.

  • There’s a similar dental clinic in Tuggerah in the Central Coast with No Gap checkup and clean on pacific highway, changed to them from another clinic for the last 2 years and was very impressed! Don’t have to pay out of pocket for the exact same service compared to other clinics I have used in the central coast.

  • My 2 cents as another dentist. New acc in case I’m identifiable plus for the life of me I couldn’t login to my original acc lol. I can’t say for all of them as i honestly have only seen a few of their patients and they haven’t been grossly negligent. The pattern that I mostly see is just over servicing ie many fillings to try and compensate for the lack of gap. Or super quick cleans like 5 mins. Unless you’re one of those people who are anal with their oral hygiene and religiously attend six monthly - most would take longer than that. There’s been a few instances where I’ve seen patients who have been regular attenders at no gaps and they had so much buildup under the gum simply because they weren’t cleaned thoroughly. I even had one who commented the inside of the back teeth never got cleaned previously and I’m the first person who’s done it. Look I take what they say with a pinch of salt because if I can get a dollar for every patient who’s said their previous dentist had their knee on them when extracting a tooth, I’d be a millionaire. That just simply doesn’t happen but lots of patients believe it does. Another instance I’ve had someone coming to me for a second opinion because they receive a plan of 10 fillings that were required and I found like one or two and that’s if I’m being super pedantic about it. I also have a colleague who works there on other days and the amount of over servicing I come across is crazy. Again it’s not gross incompetence it’s just unethical. When I first started applying for jobs like no gaps was relatively new and they would advertise for a position without the company name so I thought it was just a small private clinic. I found out after they set up an interview and I was a pushover back then so I went to interview anyway. I asked them how they get their revenue seeing that most things are no gap and they told me they push for major procedures and mark them up to cover the cost. Again this is years ago things may have changed. I got an offer 30 mins after the interview and they were super pushy when I decline the offer. The desperation was definitively a red flag to me. At the end of the day dentistry is super subjective and you can get very different opinions of one problem from different dentists. Regardless of where you go just be vigilant and ask questions. when in doubt seek a second opinion. If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading 🤣🤣

    • I go to Beverly Hills and they clean very well. Not overfilling either. They have 4.5 on product review.

  • What’s the quality of work like I know not all dentists do excellent work
I had some work done what I thought was a reputable and pain develop months later only to be seen by a different dentist that commented the work was really bad and the new dentist had to redo it

  • Do we have something similar in Perth?

  • So where is the catch? Just have a look at this news article

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-23/gap-free-smiles-carin…

  • I need to get a crown. I have some annual limit left. What if I go to one of these places and use the remaining annual limit, will the rest be considered as No Gap or I will have to pay out of pocket for the remaining that is beyond the annual limit?
