Monteith's Black/Blue Moon 6 for $12, Fosters 6 for $9, 12x 440ml Orchard Thief Cider $18 at Dan Murphy's (Free Mbrshp Rqrd)

510

Complain no more felllow booze-hounds! DM finally has a decent beer for you! $12 for Monteiths black, for my money one of the best dark beers you can easily get off the shelf in Australia.

And just for laughs, they paired it with one of the worst:
Fosters at $9 a 6-pack.

Yes, that's right, Fosters. So bad only the poms will drink it.

Your best bet for getting drunk in a hurry for under $20 is the Orchard Thieves Apple Cider: 12 x 440ml cans for $18. Hate to think what that one tastes like…

Also:
Bitburger 6-pack + crisps $14 (not sure this is much of a bargain really)
Carlton Dry Fusion lime 6-pack $10
Erin Cream liqueur 700ml $10
Tag 5 vodka flavours 700ml $30
Hogs 5 Bourbon $34
Dalwhinnie 15yo 700ml $65
Cougar bourbon 6-pack $15 (that one's for my mum)

Orchard Thieves is owned by Monteith's. It tastes ok for the price.

EDIT oops I am not associated with the store

Put lots of ice in the cup and orchard theives is a 5-7 on the taste scale, its about a strongbow original on the sweetnes scale if I remember correctly.

  • I thought it was just the Yanks that drank Fosters lol

    • +1

That's made over their, we don't want anything to do with the stuff!

As a funny side note, Fosters was developed by, if I remember right, 2 Americans living in Melbourne.

        • Fosters was the Aussie go to beer in the 70s…Kingwood and falcon were the cars .

    • +1

I thought so too……until I went over there last year. The first and last person I saw drinking it was a homeless guy in Seattle…..

On the plus side, he did appear to be drinking it from a 440ml tin.

Clearly he went for value for money over taste.

    Monteith's Black for $12!
Only 9 hours 23 minutes until knock off time. Going to be a long wait….

    • +3

Looks like I picked the wrong month to quit drinking

      • +1

        Same

      Its knock of time!

    • is this any good? I only had Monteith cider and wasn't too impressed.

Finally a decent dark beer for these cold winter nights!

  • What, your mums a cougar?

    • +2

      5 cougars thanks.

i'd struggle to drink fosters even if they paid me $9

  • +1

I haven't had Fosters since I lived in the UK. Not too bad for a lager, almost always the cheapest on tap.

    • +1

There's a good reason for it being the cheapest on tap.

      • it's abv % is reduced so that the bars don't need to pay extra tax.
Becks Vier is about the same price and so i John Adams.
Fosters tasted a bit like carlton cold.

    • +5

I've had Fosters on tap in London and it tasted vastly better there than it does here .
Maybe beer tastes better when your on holidays ?

      +1 for Monteiths .

      • +2

yep, Fosters in the UK is quite drinkable. Don't knock it unless you have tried it.

    • Fosters sold in UK is actually brewed by Heineken.

I had a pint in a pub when I was in London (about 15 years ago) as a joke and I actually enjoyed it.

On an unrelated note, I also grabbed a can of Budweiser from a convenience store and chucked it in a bin after a sip. It is every bit as horrible as all the negative comments.

    Dalwhinnie 15yo 700ml $65
    a steal

This is Fosters Classic which is mid strength, I don't know why Dan's persist with selling the stuff.

The original Fosters is actually pretty good if you're after an old school mass produced Australian lager. You can't drink Melbourne Bitter then jump on the "Fosters is shit" bandwagon. The original Fosters is still one of the only beers left from the 70s/80s that still tastes like it did back then unlike the bastardised Draught and the rotting garbage juice they call VB these days. Most people who hate Fosters don't even know why, or have never tried it.

    • +1

      PREACH!

    • this guy knows his shit.

    • Pretty sure they have an exclusivity deal with it, so would have to sell it for as long as the 'deal' was signed for. Always a tough one when Dans advertise it and people come in to price beat with standard fosters!

Also 'Blue Moon' x 6 for $12. A very nice wheat beer.

    • +1

Was wondering about that one. How does it compare to Hoegaarden? I love that stuff.

This and the Monteitha dark have piqued my interest this month. Aside from those it's pretty average. I will miss the Asahi 500ml $16 6 packs.

      • +2

Blue Moon is okay, but it's a macro American beer that aims to compete with craft brews. It's passable but no Hoegaarden (not even the same style - Blue Moon is more an English wheat ale, Hoegaarden is a Witbier).

        • +1

Just cracked a Blue Moon and enjoying it. I do note it is the "Brewed under License in Australia" version. Not sure of any difference though as I have not had the USA version before. It's no Hoegaarden (and totally different colour) but seems to be a good, easy drinking beer and I just love the hint of citrus and coriander.

        • How does it taste compared to a meconium aspiration?

        • @nubzy: It was originally imported as was the Coors, both are now brewed under license by CCA.

Tasting both at the same time when we received the new stock the taste difference is negligible.

        • @tony abbott: 5/7 would aspire again

      • +1

I'd agree with Meconium. Still, worth a 6 pack to see if you like it. I must admit I've only had it out of the tap (and often with a slice of orange) but it shouldn't be too different bottled.

I haven't tried Monteith's Black but love dark beers in the winter months so will definitely be picking up a couple for the weekend.

    • +2

I would rate the Blue Moon above Monteith's Black, but that's my preference.

Not sure why the OP missed posting it, and was thinking about posting my own bargain dedicated to this beer alone

      • +1

Just updated, Blue Moon and the Coors weren't showing at 7am when I first checked it.. not sure why not.

  • +6

Fosters is the best beer to take to a party, because almost nobody will steal it from the esky, and if someone happens to, you'll know exactly who did it – because the thief will be the only other person at the party drinking a Fosters.

All jokes aside Fosters Classic is perfectly quaffable and I've always got a 6er in the fridge as a daily drinker. I'll be getting on this. Cheers OP.

    monteiths blackkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk wooooooooooooo, NZ prices

  • +4

    You missed the good stuff!

$12 six packs of blue moon is a ripper deal. I'm not sure how it tastes out of the bottle (wheat beers are best young), but you can't go wrong with a pint of this on tap with a slice of orange.

Also, 2 for $32 of the De Bortoli Estate Grown Pinot is amazing value. You won't get better pinot at that price.

    OP please update!!!

    • Done, don't know why but it wasn't showing this morning when I first checked.

  • Don't forget Bailey's Choc Luxe - $23 and free delivery code July100 if you spend over $100 on spirits/wines..

  • +1

Lagavulin 16YO @ $84 is a pretty nice deal as well. I did the Woolworths WISH eCard thing through cashrewards to get the price down to $79.80 (5% discount) and then should be getting another ~$5 back through cashrewards, making it a $75 Lagavulin - outstanding!

    • yeah its pretty good if you have the discount WISH card and Cash Rewards. used to see it for $80 even quite often though.

  • +2

Great price on the Monteith's Black.

  • Not doing click and collect again. Waiting over two hours and still no collect sms. Waste of time.

    • Yeah I usually only do click and collect if I have a big order for cashrewards, otherwise it takes way too long and can be quite annoying for both the staff member and other customers.

I have also gone in after 2.5 hours and my order has been ready without yet receiving an SMS.

      • +1

I was already at the shops to buy something else. After I did that I sat in my car for well over an hour waiting for the collect SMS which never came. Got fed up and went in and asked about it in the end and the guy helped by getting two cold ones from the fridge straight away. Apparently they had a big backlog of orders. No way will I bother with that sort of hassle again, easier to just get it myself and pay with ING 2% rebate.

Monteith's Black is good. Just had one. Thanks!
