Laser Eye Surgery (Sydney)

Been thinking about getting laser eye surgery (PRK or LASEK) for years now and finally decided to bite the bullet this year. Does anyone have any recommendations (or horror stories) regarding particular surgeons or clinics in Sydney? Information on pricing, aftercare etc would also be much appreciated.

  • Are you currently wearing glasses? A lot of surgeons won't do it until you've been wearing them for at least a year.

  • Yeah, I've worn glasses for years. Have researched the general requirements & risks - just figuring out which surgeon / clinic to go with.

  • Go here. I can vouch for all the doctors here. I have worked with them in the past for research purposes and I send all my friends and family here.

Dr. Brian Harrisberg and his team of surgeons and physicians are the some of the best in Australia.

  • I'm in Melbourne so can't help with surgeons, but I had PRK about 5 years ago so if you've got any queries on that let me know.

Also, my eyesight was stable before I got the surgery done. No one mentioned it could regress, which has happened over the last 6 months or so. I still would've got it done but it's damn disappointing to be possibly heading back to where I was. Something to be aware of.

    • Can you elaborate more on the regression? How much did it regress by? Is there a particular factor that set off the regression? Thanks

      • I only need glasses when it's dark/I'm not in natural light, I could feasibly get away without glasses if I needed to but I much prefer having them. I think I'm at -1 or -1.5 in each eye at most right now. That said, this is how it started when I was 17-18 and I ended up about -8 before the surgery.

I actually had the surgery about 8 years ago too, I've just realised. Argh, time really flies.

Anything that set it off? Not sure, but I'd take a guess that staring at a screen for 12 hours a day hasn't helped.

  • I had LASIK in Korea a couple years back cost just over $2K. I had to buy some aftercare meds and vitamins but wasn't costly in Korea.
My eyes were stable for years hence I jumped on the surgery, make sure your eye sight is stable as in it has not regressed further and maintained for a couple of years to make it worthwhile.
Besides a year of dry eyes, well worth it. My eye sight regressed slightly 0.5 which is disappointing but if it gets any worse I will see if I can get another surgery.

    • Thanks, but as that discussion is more than 5 years old I was hoping for newer perspectives…

  • Join BUPA ultimate. There's a 12month waiting period for LASIK/LASEK but they cover the entire procedure. It'll cost you a touch over $3k for the 12 months of health cover but that's about half the price of the $6k procedure

    • Thanks for the tip, will certainly consider it.

  • Please don't have it, I have never had it but I am suffering from dry eyes which is most common complication of LASIK. And i can tell you, I can wear glasses 24/7 just to have it taken away. There is a facebook group called "Lasik complications" join it and read all the posts from people who have had it done. Link to group: https://m.facebook.com/groups/276924852516717
