Deal won't appeal to everyone as most prefer to use phone maps (usually I'm the same). I'm heading from Melbourne to Darwin shortly and wanted a dedicated GPS rather than using a phone/iPad for 4 days of driving.

Although their original price is higher than everyone else, $279 with the discount and express postage is pretty good. JB have it for $329, best they could do was $310.

Google maps reports a grand total of 3 turns to get to Darwin from Melboure, that just paid for ya fuel!

Haha, that's true. I just like having it all in front of me. Will be up there working for 1-2 months and will hopefully get some time to look around :)

      • Sounds great, having maps will be handy for that, make sure you checkout the fish feeding :)

That was great for a laugh!

The thing I don't like about these standalone GPS devices is that they don't provide accurate traffic information.

Yes, they'll show car accidents and breakdowns which are transmitted via the Suna service, but they don't show the live traffic speeds on most roads.

Crowdsourced, online traffic data like is used by Google Maps is far better in terms of accuracy, I've found. Rather than relying on the government traffic information services to send out alerts (which could take 10 to 20 minutes to happen), the crowdsourced data consists of reports from all the devices using the navigation app almost instantly, and can re-route you around congestion that forms after you've begun your journey. It barely uses any data on your phone, too.

This will work in the outback, but you're much better off using your phone for GPS in the city. Heck, it'd be smarter to add $200 to your next phone purchase and get a larger phone that can be used for both GPS and regular phone usage.

  • An old (Wifi) iPad 2 or newer (or other tablet with a GPS) will do it too.
Just tether to your phone for the map data.

    • I think you mean wifi+3g ipad 2 because the wifi one doesnt have gps, only wifi geotag

      • Yep. I sit corrected.

  • I have the 65LMT and it has great features, but terrible routing info. Often it will try to get me to use peoples driveways as roads, gets me to use a B road when there is a much better highway right alongside it. It's the dumbest GPS out (well, that I've used). My old TomTom is much better.
