Hi OzBargainers. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this generator good bad or otherwise. Listed for sale this Saturday at $329.

Power here goes out several times a year. Looking for something that's dependable and hopefully not too noisey.

  • There's a lot more to consider than just getting a generator.

Firstly, how clean is the electricity that it produces? It may not be suitable for electronic goods (like TVs etc).

Secondly, how are you going to connect it to your equipment and appliances? The best and safest method is a transfer switch in your meter box, but getting one put in will likely cost more than the generator. Otherwise, you'll need to bring several extension cords inside from the generator, unplug things from the wall, and connect them to the generator. Then, put everything back afterwards.

Lastly, what exactly do you intent to connect to it? You may not be able to cook if you have an electric stove and oven (which are usually hard-wired anyway). Even making toast or boiling a jug of water may not be possible, and definitely not at the same time as much else.

    Still, it's cheap.

The main thing I worry about when the power goes out for hours (as it does at my house) is the food in the fridge, then the TV, then the internet, usually in that order. Oh, and maybe the clock radio so that I get up in the morning for work. Eating is easy - something that doesn't need to be cooked, or takeaway.

If that's all you want to do, and you can confirm that the power from the generator is clean enough, go for it.

Oh, and it will definitely be noisier than you or your neighbours would like. Not as noisy as a mower, though.
