  • Brightgreen is a good LED company, you can trust all their specs (they'll be within 10%).

    Independent review of this here.

    Good light, at least if you're not using a dimmer.

    • These will work fine on a dimmer as long as you have a minimum load (at least 3 units is best) and a compatible electronic transformer like the Osram Redback.

      Also, the LED benchmark website is often a reliable source, but despite it being presented as independent testing, it is actually backed by some major players in the lighting industry. This probably should be expected in this day and age though.

        I think you need to be VERY careful with those kinds of comments.

        The operator of that site might not take kindly to false accusations.

  • Does anyone know how these compare with the Philips Master LED 7W globes?

  • I really believe that this is unreasonably expensive - I have just started working for a company that does this as part of the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (The Green Guys), and they send out certified electricians for free to replace your old halogens. The globe prices are as follows:
    * Primsal Brilliance Retrofit 440 HPF - $2 (One year warranty)
    * Philips 5.5W 3000K MR16 60D LED Lamp - $4 (Two year warranty)
    * Philips Master LED MR16 7W 3000K 60D Dimmable - $9 (Two year warranty)

    There is no upfront payment involved, and you only pay after everything has been installed by the electrician and you're satisfied. Again, the electrician is completely free - you only pay for the globes.

    The only thing better with this deal (as far as I can tell) is the 3 year warranty, and that my thing is only Victoria-wide.

    PM me if you want further information. Note that I can get you a quote from the office within an hour of reading your message. Also, if you want, I can get the office to call at a time of your choosing and confirm a date/time for the installation.

      I'm not in Victoria, for me those Bunnings links show $15 / $16 respectively for the Philips globes.

      • "I'm not in Victoria, for me those Bunnings links show $15 / $16 respectively for the Philips globes."

        I don't expect that Bunnings (even Bunnings stores in Vic) has anything to do with that Victorian Government scheme. I assume those were just convenient links to show the products.

        The discounted prices would only be part of the scheme referred to.

      • My bad, I just used the Bunnings links to show the specifications of the light globes. To clarify, those subsidised prices are only available through The Green Guys (for which you just have to PM me with your details and get a quote).

    • Interesting that the prices in VIC appear to be subsidised at Bunnings. Might get a mate to send me over a bunch of those globes.

      EDIT: So they're not subsidised. Obviously the VIC government is paying a hefty fee. Hope the end result is better than the insulation scheme

        It's not the government who pays the "rebates".

    • I wonder how much you are ripping the government per globe? I'm sure it's more than the $17.95 advertised in this deal.

      I'm not bagging your business, there is money is to be made so why not, business is business. It just makes me angry these incentives still exist. Why doesn't the government offer the same rebate direct to people to go towards globes of their own choice and save on labour?

      • I've just started working for this company, and I figured I'd inform everyone of a deal that I found was better than this advertised one. I'm not trying to advertise something here and I'm not trying to make something seem better than it really is.

        As for the incentive - the way The Green Guys make money is by selling certificates to energy companies who are not producing efficiently. These certificates are produced when the globes are replaced, and the customer signs a form saying they have been replaced. Basically, the energy companies are paying for not being efficient, and that money goes towards subsiding the light globes. From what I understand, it is a win-win situation. Money spent by government is minimised because the energy firms are paying fines (by buying certificates), and the people saves hundreds on their electricity bills.

        Also, the government doesn't just subsidise customers directly because they want to actually recycle your old halogens back - the electricians are instructed to take a picture of the old globes and to write down how many they replaced on a form. Also, electricians are certified and equipped to replace your transformers if they're not compatible with the new LED globes. I'm pretty sure the average Joe won't be able to do that.

  • Unfortunately the businesses built on government incentives never last, usually as soon as the certificates drop or the scheme stops all the suppliers disappear, thus leaving you with no warranty. PS. the products supported on the scheme being installed for free are generally low quality. Putting in a transformer, lamp and fascia plus installation works out at a cost price at something like $5+$15+$3+~$5 = $28, minus incentive of around $10 back for certificates. How on earth could anyone participating be making money OR are they just putting in extremely low quality low cost products? We participated in the VEET scheme back when the certificate price was much better and even then it was hard to put good quality products in at a reasonable price. Anyway the point is you get what you pay for, and thank you to all those who took up this offer so quickly.

    • You DO realise that I've listed Philips ones for $4, right? I checked LED Benchmark, and they gave a pretty damn good review of it, and I, for one, trust that website. Anyways, the company has done it for quite a few houses, with no issues - if people want it, they'll come. Furthermore, regarding your warranty part - the electricians are supplied by the Ozwide group, who have been operating since 2006. Thus, I assure you they're not gonna disappear off the face of the Earth after this scheme is over. Also, you're not required to put a different transformer for about 90% of the houses - most of them are already compatible with the old transformers, so your math is clearly wrong there.

        Electricians will always have work, but they're not the ones providing the product warranty. Yes the Philips lamps are great and I'd highly recommend them also. We work closely with David at LED Benchmark so we understand whats happening in the market. I also like that you guys are selling the OEM version of Enlightens Chamaeleon, I wonder how long that'll last.

  • I presume these downlights are not suitable for a gimble downlight fitting due the extra depth.

    • The additional height usually is accommodated by most gimbal downlight fittings, of course without seeing I could not guarantee.
